This one is for the old timers: A good friend of mine is propping on oval office set for a Reagan-era TV address. He asked me what would have been typical for the sound gear at that time. This is a little before my time and I can only guess so I'm asking the group. What would have been typical headphones, LAV, where they booming on those addresses? No Portabrace I'm sure but what was a typical mixer bag? Thanks, Glen P.

Well not really. I just watched this Rolling Stones live in concerts film and the credits were a whose who of the film industry. Garret Brown, Craig Denault, Nick McClean, Bob Thomas, Ray de la Motte, Jimmy Glennon and Michael Gennie. I also noticed Jeff Wexler's credit and Don Coufal and no other that a very young lad named Crew Chamberlain. Come on Jeff and Crew. There must be some great old war stories about this one? The statute of limitations has expired by now, so fess up.

I'm looking to use my MacBook for some playback. On my current show there is a lot of telephone call playback where they want me to play back the dialog from the completed scene during the filming of the scene to be intercut. The editors have been providing me with a CD from the take they are going with. I want to delete the audio from the sections where you can hear the script super reading the other side of the call, and in so keep the timing in tact. Or maybe break the call up into pieces and assign keyboard strokes to each piece? Any ideas/experiences? Thanks, Rich

I recently saw THX 1138. Walter Murch's "Sound Montage" was brilliant (he also got a screenwriting credit). And there's a "Special Thanks" credit to Haskell Wexler. I'd be curious to hear the back-story on Sir Wexler's relationship with George Lucas when Lucas was a beginning filmmaker. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/ A frightening near future story.

Hey , I'd like maybe to pick some brains out there.....and maybe start a new topic for a while. Talking about really hard shots in film's and how the sound guys approached or pulled it off. Forgeting what the result was for a second ADR or NO ADR, just how the sound dept even tackled getting a good guide track for dailes. What made me think of this was watching " Bonfire of the Vanities " and that insane stedicam shot in the beginning of the film that goes through parking gargaes , elevators, ballrooms, etc..., I am sure we all know the scene I am explaining. Does anybody in this forum know how or begin to think of the approch ? Just curious . Or any other examples o…

Just curious to hear some thoughts on since the writers strike was settled a month ago, does it still seem there is strike fatigue looming. And with SAG's deadline coming does there seem to be still a pause in production life around town. Mainly TV shows that I guess are coming back now for a handful of shows then still taking the summer off and starting back in late July to start there " normal " timeline of shooting. Some shows wont start filming until mid May that have been off since last Nov. when they ran out of scripts and shut down. I am starting a show next month that was supposed to start last Nov. Has the writers strike screwed up the town that much ?

-from PowerPage article TSA Employee Unaware of MacBook Air, Causes Traveler to Miss Flight I have a theory about the TSA: these are the same people who would have been pumping gas 15 years ago. According to Engadget, a Transportation Security Administration employee apparently held up a traveler after removing it from the scanner, pulled it aside and began to ask the owner questions about the unit. The TSA employee, flabbergasted by the "lack of a drive" and the complete absence of "ports on the back", was then aided by co-workers who swarmed to investigate. The MacBook Air's owner missed the flight, which took off on schedule, but was eventually allowed to p…

I'm working on a very small production for the next couple of days where we're doing interviews and some recording of seminars. The DP/Camera Op is somebody I've never worked with before, but he asked me what I thought was a pretty strange thing yesterday. He asked if I had striped his tape. I had never been asked by anybody to ever stripe their tape for them. He mentioned that was always the sound person's job. Now, granted I haven't done a lot of TV work, but is this normal? Do some of you have to stripe the tape for the camera op? He had a Sony HD camera that I hadn't ever worked with, how in the world do you deal with knowing where all the stuff is on a camera when th…

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with the effect of radioactive material in close proximity to over the shoulder mixers and wireless mics. This is of a personal nature and is something that I can't get away from.I know I could put a lead shield in place as protection but the weight would be prohibitive. On the other hand there may be no effect whatsoever. Brachytherapy is the name of treatment. It will happen in a couple of months and the material will be active for about 3 months. Some of you may have come across this situation already and on average 1 in 10 of us will do so at some stage in our lives. If you have already faced this and wish to comment of…

I have a shoot coming up in Australia (East Coast) and I'm wondering if there are any Lectro blocks that have known interference problems. My hope is to use blocks 25 & 26 as I own many in that range. Any help would be great. Thanks all.

Anyone know who the sound supervisor is for Celebrity Apprentice? I was watching the show tonight and am truly impressed by how good the hidden lavs sound. That in spite of some difficult wardrobe. Even outdoors didn't hear any wind issues at all. Would like to know what they're using and how they're micing them. Thanks, Bernie

Yeah, I know I just asked about accountants in DC last year, but that's history, baby! I've recently moved to LA, and am still unsure about doing my own taxes. So...any suggestions for a good local accountant who's familiar with our particular line of work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Sonny

What would cause a DC offset when recording with a 744t in a bag configuration? Running on NP1's powering mixer, recorder and 5 wireless. The files seem to have an obvious DC offset.

This may be more for the ENG/News guys but feel free to chime in. The Election year is well upon us and things are crazy right now. Booking calls are coming in and confusion about how to handle them all has also set in. EG: This past Monday a regular client of mine called and asked to put me on ROFR (right of first refusal)or hold for Monday-Wednesday of this past week. That same day another client called and offered a firm booking for NBC on Tuesday. We all knew that the storm was coming because of the Clinton/Obama debate in Cleveland. I called the first client back and said I was offered a firm job on Tuesday, and she said to take it because no calls had come in…

When not working on films, my income mostly comes from the construction industry. Consider; we all drive cars. If we stepped into a car with no labels, all we really need is a key to start the engine... and we could drive across town. In construction, driving different peices of heavy equipment is, well, kinda like driving different cars. They all generally have four wheels, an engine, means of steering, and different gears for forward and reverse, and lastly, some form of speed control and braking (of course levers and such for their particular task). Unfortunately, the means of controlling the different functions change slightly from one machine to the next. …

A recent shoot I was on makes me want to gather a few opinions from the collective experience here. Hence, a series of questions about the usage of high-pass filters: 1. Does anyone specifically NOT use a high-pass filter for recording dialog? 2. What is your default roll-off setting (for those working with variable hp filters)? 3. Under what circumstances (if any) will you increase that freq setting? For myself, I usually dial in a hair over the 75 Hz mark on the Sonosax. I'll increase that a touch for any variety of reasons: -master shot gets into complicated boom-work that reveals some handling noise (though I try to avoid change a setting in the middle of a…

I've often heard that "Sound guys don't have reels" and thusly have never bothered to make one. Has anyone here made/used one, and if so, has it made a difference? I realize that in theory, what goes on the reel would be the post release version, unless you somehow use all production tracks, but either way, this is the general discussion area, so I'm speaking in general terms... Thought I'd re-route this topic, instead of inundating the studio map thread where I veered off-topic... Here are the first posts Yes, exactly. I've been gradually increasing expendables. Wasn't sure how far it could go. Thanks. On longer, low-budget narratives, if they freak at my budget approximation of expendables, I'll suggest that they can pay a PA for the leg-work to provide batts and media if they really want to save a buck. -Brian

Anyone who hasn't read this, here's the news (and yes, I know, maybe this doesn't matter to anyone but I have been following this because I do believe it has a bearing on our work). Japan press: Toshiba to end HD DVD Previous reports that Toshiba will end its efforts in HD DVD are accurate, according to a report by Japanese broadcaster NHK as well as additional sources. The electronics maker is poised to both stop future development as well as ramp down manufacturing of HD DVD players, recorders, and PC drives. The move will be one of Toshiba's costliest to date and should cost hundreds of millions of dollars, according to the Japan press outlet. Toshiba has not res…
