Hello everyone, Just about to start a new project and it looks like camera has decided to go with the new F23 camera. I know the deck can be, and after a conversation with the DIT, will be mounted at the DIT rack and tent. The preliminary reports are that the fans are rather loud. I think someone actually called it "the hurricane". I also believe there are fan settings which can be adjusted as needed. Luckily the DIT and I are good friends and have worked together in the past...it looks like I have back up. I'll be recording double system as usual, with a scratch track going to camera. I'll jam the boxes and generate the master code. Multi track will match up…

Greetings from Belgium. I’ve been asked to “rebuild the soundtrack of an ice skating show based on the Pinocchio story (Walt Disney). The guys don’t have the music of the show anymore. They gave me a home made video of the show, I have to find all the music based on what I hear in the video and completely rebuild the soundtrack. Hope my explanations are clear. I can't find 8 music tracks. Can I ask you to take some time and listen to those music, here's the web page where you can listen to the missing music. Any idea is welcome. Thank you very much for your time. Pascal

On this thursday, Sept 20, production has come up with a scenario of sound mixer in a boat with camera and me (boom-op) on the back of a sea-doo with a driver, perhaps to boom. They are also requesting we wire the actors who will be wearing wet-suits and on surfboards. The dialogue takes place while sitting on the boards looking to shore. I believe we will be utilizing the lectro MM400, and Sanken cos-11: manufacturer claims water resistant. Some say, give it a fresh water bath when you are done and there are no problems. I'm not so sure the Lectrosonic term 'water resistant' means it can be hidden in a wet suit and occasionally immersed in sea water as actors cli…

I didn't see any contact info for RVDMIXR. I watched 310 to Ymua yesterday and was impressed with the sound, credited to RVDMIXR and co. Nice job. I have worked on a couple of projects involving cowboy hats and have learned how they can be problematic for close micing with the boom. Rance Howard, a seasoned pro, often hung his head low for his character's performance, however as soon as it was time to deliver his line, his head angled up perfectly for the mic to pick up the signal past the front brim. RVD, if you happen to be reading, would you mind sharing some of your experience with capturing the sound? What percentage would you say went to ADR? How much was actual…

I know several of you aren't LA locals, but for the ones who are, I have a question. Do you know anything about the Business Tax? I just got a letter asking me to divulge my earnings for the past three years. Have you all been doing this, or are you aware of something that exempts us from this? Thanks, Tom

I've read those melancholy posts from mixers before on RAMPS and here about their worst fear becoming reality. I am now a member of that club, and thankfully, it's not my gear that was affected. The craziest thing is that in spite of the fact that there were over a dozen leaks in the Occidental stage where our set lives, the only piece of gear that was damaged was the Yamaha DM1000 board. Water dripped from a light fixture down onto the display screen, and into the rest from there. When the crew arrived on Saturday morning, they heard our stage announce/playback speakers gargling noise at max volume. The mixer had been left on as normal, and shorted out badly. We got a re…

It posted this on RAMPS, but a pile of spam landed on top of it overnight... It was a long night for someone.... Bill Maher's show open runs, he walks out and the lips are moving and NOT A SOUND. He looks around and someone hands him a handmike-- " Welcome to the Comedy Cave in Cleveland" After a while a stage manager hands him a second lav pak, Lectrosonics by the way... no dice-- no sound. In the meantime the hand mike (some kind of Beyer) is breaking up. At the first live interview he is handed another lav which works.. you could see the -20 light flashing. I am thinking the mixing board tanked since everything was so messed up. I hope …

I'll be in Washington DC for the next week or so staying at the Renaissance M Street Hotel. Any locals want to meet and talk sound geek stuff? And does anyone know who is mixing "Body of Lies?" Also looking for nice, but reasonably priced restaurant or restaurant/bar near the hotel in which to have my after work dinner. Any suggestions from locals or folks having recently worked or stayed in the area? Thanks, Robert Sharman (818) 304-3066

Ive been thinking about this idea i've had for a while... I want to build a small lcd monitor for my boom ops that they can wear around their wrist like a watch. Ive heard of this setup before, but I'm not sure if there is any commercial product available that is designed to function like this. Anyhow I need a small lcd screen with ntsc video input. Can anyone recommend a small (no more than 2.5" diagonal) lcd with ntsc input (and runs around 12v power)? Ive been thinking about this one: http://www.millertech.com/modular-lcds1.html The first or second one on the page - the 1.8" one or the 2.5" one. And I also need a wireless transmitter/receiver system. Ive…

The brain trust here at Get Smart have come up w/ yet another invention that will slowly find it's way into your world in the not-too-distant future. Medical tape, vampire clips, moleskin, tie foam and all those other pesky expendables are a thing of the past. Introducing an amazing new microphone mounting product (soon to be named) that will completely alleviate all unwanted clothing noise generated by silks, polyester, over-starching etc. Take a look and let us know what you think. Any product developments made from your suggestions will be handsomely rewarded. Look for us at NAB. Scott Harber Dang Me Sound

Hello All, I am wondering if anyone would like to contribute or collaborate on what should be included in a deal memo specifically oriented toward the shorter format ENG, EFP type projects that are not under union jurisdiction. Seems every inquiry now wants to set my rate, tell me how much they pay for expendables... It's really getting stupid trying to just sell a quality sound job. The BBC's memo states working as "Wet Hire" is expected in some conditions. I've worked in a couple of rainstorms...when it gets to thundering I will not extend a boompole...where do you draw the line with that stuff ? I doubt seriously that after our next president forgets his/…

I popped in yesterday during my lunch break to put my name in the hat. It seemed like it was going off pretty well. I had to return to work before the drawing though, so I was wondering if anyone was there to see the drawing? I imagine they'll call anyone who was not present, but if you were, it would be cool to know who won? Also, did anyone have any enlightening conversations with the product reps?

One of my pet peeves about episodic television production is THEIR policy of Pro-Rating Sound Equipment packages based on a partial work week. For example paying 4/5 of a package rate because of a holiday week. When and how did this pratice become "grandfathered" as SOP? My argument to counter this is that the Camera, Lighting and Grip packages are WEEKLY rentals with no discounts for unused days. If the equipment is in the hands (i.e on the camera truck) of the Production, then they should pay for a full weeks rental wether the package was 'working' or not. I'd like to know how other mixers have dealt with this situation and how you have managed to overcome this …

I haven't ranted for awhile so....... I live and work in a small market here in the midwest. Out here, sound people with equipment are few and far between. In my town, there are only two of us with NLR's and another sound person I sub rent to. In our world, some months there is not enough work to go around and the next day every production wants to shoot on the 15th, the date is set in stone, can't be moved and they are calling two days before the shoot. I've survived this for the last 20 years. So here's the rub. Guy from LA calls, he's in another state 170+ miles from me. He can't find a soundperson to save his life. The city 50 miles from him with so…

I'm currently starting week three on my first million dollar feature, and just scouted City Hall Park in Manhattan yesterday for a few scenes we're set to shoot next week. All of the scenes will be Steadicam walk & talks involving 2 actors (1 male, 1 female) and at points during the scenes they will walk near and possibly stand next to the giant fountain in the parks center. They will be covered from different angles and sizes - so anything is fair game as far as framing. I'm trying to give this production something other than a guide track for ADR. The problems are that they will be walking toward and away from the fountain, and some dialogue will take place di…

nvt said: "The 824 allows 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 track counts -- as it's only an 8 input machine, that only precludes recording 3 and 7 track poly files. It does seem a bit arbitrary, although in practice it's never come up as an issue." It is probably a function of how I work and the jobs that I am on, I find that if I am recording anything more than 1 track (1 track only is what I do about 80% of the time) it turns out that I need to record 3 tracks. Also, these 3 tracks are never track 1, 2, and 3, it is almost always track 1 and then track 3 and 4 possibly. I think now that we have changed the topic thread, we probably have nothing else to talk about! If someo…

Does anyone have a line on a piece of software (and hardware) that will allow me to capture LTC (as from a camcorder etc) on a current Mac laptop (via USB?), perhaps via a function key, and insert it in a database that also allows real time typing in of notes? We used to do this, years ago, with a prgm called AutoLog that looked at the serial output of BetaCam decks (via an o40 Mac serial port)--this worked very well. AutoLog has a website still but I haven't been able to raise anyone there. Surely there is another app that does this....? Philip Perkins

I work on a stage shooting hosts all day. We've had the stage for a long time, and it's been an acoustic Nightmare for a long time. Our set is a one to one recreation of John Lautner's "Chemosphere" house, which is up the hill across the 101 from the Universal tower. Willie Burton might remember it from Charlie's Angels, where Drew Barrymore got shot out of the window. The house essentially looks like a UFO crashed into the side of the hill, and our set is 1/2 of the disk. The open end faces our electric room, which is on the stage and has an open ceiling to allow the hot electric dimmer packs to vent. The issues are that the dimmer packs have loud fans, and the set is li…
