Hi, My wife and I are taking "a brief vacation" (homage to de sica!) to Rome and Paris, before I go to Grenoble... It will be truly great if I can meet up with fellow sound people in both cities. I am in Rome 13-16th June and in Paris 18-21st June. As of now, I am struggling with trying to find places to stay in both cities - pouring through the thousands of holiday apartments and b&b - any recommendations will be truly helpful, since it is quite a jungle of these places in both cities, it is truly very difficult to figure out the reality before experiencing it in person! warmest regards -vin +91 9930903737 vinod@soundtrane.com

I have a project that needs a bit of design work and was wondering if anyone knows of any drafting software for mac. I do believe that autocad is pc only. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm curious how people handle scheduling. I just received confirmation about a gig that wasn't 100% confirmed until now, and I had also had another request about that day that wasn't confirmed. Turns out the other gig fell through, so it all worked out. But how do people handle it somebody asks about dates and tells you they aren't confirmed yet, then you have somebody else asking about those same dates? For a year in which I've been picky and haven't worked a lot, June has turned into a very busy month (I've only got 9 open days all month). Wayne

Well.. I have to admit that I donated my $12 to see Indy this weekend. I heard someone on the radio complaining about how the film lacked character.. "Oh Come On!!.. Its Indy/Lucas/Spielberg.. It suppose to be a campy thrill ride.. -Richard

Hey Guys, just looking for some advice... On a low budget feature. Location we scouted dropped out, production scrambled, took the first thing they found, and we finally tech scouted it tonight, two days (over a holiday weekend) before we are supposed to shoot there. Here's the setup: two guys talking in a pool. No wirelesses. I have two booms, 416's. Indoor pool with 30 ft-40 ft cathedral ceilings, rafters across the top, eight sliding glass doors, and six sky lights. Basically there are a few key emotional dialogue scenes (of course) that take place in the pool area. The filter system and ventilation I can kill, but the echo is another issue. Talked to grips, bigges…

Has anyone had a similar experience ? I was using a UH400a as wireless boom (416 w/ 48v) with a bag system (rx just 1 to 2 feet from tx) without any issue.... ...until the vehicle reach around 90 - 95 mph , then I received a very fast chattery and constant interference. The same bag system was using a UM400a with a lav without issue at any speed. Both rx are 411a . Unfortunately it is not easy to duplicate the circumstances for testing. Anyone ???? Jeff

We all know how difficult getting ambiance sound or room tone can be during a production. And any time that you work with a new crew or a crew you've never worked with, its difficult to judge how that crew (or director) will handle the situation of pausing the entire production for 60 seconds, in what seams like a lifetime to them. Well we all say that every job is a learning experience, but this one is a new one for me. After some small arguments about "when" we should be doing ambiance, and personally it doesn't matter to me one way or the other... One of Grip/Electrics, and older guy more my age, who sure looked like he knew what he was doing, piped up and said...…

Hi, i have often found that i want to write something - maybe longer than the time i have - and i miss the opportunity to save my post 'as it is', and get back to it later to complete it. Is there a way this forum can handle this kind of request? Of course, i can always Txtedit and then copypaste to the forum. But you know, with so many things happening, letting the forum handle this 'work in progress' will be a truly great step ahead. it will relieve me of the need to commit to memory that i had worked on a posting for a few days - long - and then after a week - when i get to the group, i get reminded of it (or not!) best -vin Bombay, India +9930903737

Does anybody know where to get protective caps for Firewire ports. I want to cover the Firewire port on the side of my Deva when I'm not using it. Also for that matter I guess USB ones as well. I can find cover caps to cover the end of a cable but I'm looking for male cover plates to fill the Firewire USB holes. Thanks.

This past weekend I worked on a low-budget spec shoot. It was direct-to-camera (a Varicam), three channel (boom, 2 lavs mixed via my 302). Great job for me as I'm not as experienced as some of you folks, and it paid a decent rate plus a small kit fee. I really enjoyed the directors, and the DP was extremely professional. I'm developing a theory that as you go up the experience level the other departments act more and more professionally toward each other. Hope that's true. Anyway, the A/D on the shoot was absolutely green, and I think she had heard that the A/D's job is to shield the directors and generally be hated on set. So it seemed like she went out of her way …

Boom Peoples (and mixers, I you like) :Straight vs. internally coiled cable? Which do you prefer? I've used straight internal cables for years. Was thinking about checking out the coiled thing on a 16-18 foot pole. It could be a trade off between convenience and weight/handling noise. Thoughts?

I just recently started using two new Schoeps CMIT-5U's on my show as a replacement for my Sennheiser 60's that I've been using for many years. I love the CMITs - but I was wondering about other users thoughts on them. Particularly if there are any strange anomalies that have cropped up. Once I get some replies I'll explain what I mean by anomalies. Thanks in advance, RL

I am in the tropics and shooting on boats around salt water and sand, and the biggest problem I am having is wind protection. I am dealing with 30 knot winds, and convertibles. I have my shotguns in full(High wind covers and furry) Zeppelin rigs and am still getting wind cutting through. The Lavs have been a nightmare! After day one, I have been trying various techniques with no perfect solution. The wind cuts through no matter what. The shirts are acting like flags and just flapping in the wind. My only solution is to spray down the talent with spray adhesive and stick the shirts to their whole body. Somehow I don't think it's gong to go over too well. I have the lav's b…

As we all know JWsound is a great resource for field audio discussions. A lot of these forum posts often find their way to post production but I am wondering if anyone out there knows a good online community for specifically post audio topics.

I just saw the opening of Hardball with Chris Matthews, and both the preshow tease, and the first minute of the show had all the sounds normally there, except for Chris Matthews mic! He was talking the whole time, on camera, and no sound! Having worked in live TV, I get some great Schadenfreude from seeing this and imagining the panic in the control room. I'd love to hear some stories of broadcast audio nightmares?

I am posting a link to an online magazine that has consistently had very good insightful articles regarding two giants in the computer world: Apple and Microsoft. I am not posting this as a Mac fanatic (which I am) or as a Microsoft hater (which I am not) but rather as a resource for the ongoing education and necessary understanding of how big business, media and marketing, affect our lives. I think this is totally appropriate to direct people to these articles (and I in fact find all of these things fascinating --- but remember, I was going to be a teacher in Behavioral Sciences before getting into sound). Please ignore this, as I'm sure you will, if understanding Appl…

Hi gang, I've been looking at some of the portable 2 track recorders recently and had a question. I've got a gig this weekend that'll be recorded straight into the varicam. No problem and nice since we won't have to deal with sync issues or running timecode or anything. This is normally how I do my shoots since the market around here can't afford 2 recorder setups very often. However, it got me to thinking. Most of the 2 track digital recorders I've seen (including the SD 702), don't have XLR outs. The $999 Tascam HDP2 only has RCA outputs, for crying out loud. If I wanted to run this unit in between the mixer and the camera, how am I supposed to get the audio there…

Hi Gang, I'm about to leave on a fifteen week reality / documentary gig through the remote wilderness of Alberta and British Columbia Canada. Along with all the usual technical issues i've been dealing with I'm also trying to figure some personal comfort issues. Namely keeping the billions of Black flies and mosquitoes away from me. From what i understand DEET is bad for rubber/plastics used in audio cables ? Anyone know if this is so and if it is, can you recommend some alternatives to DEET or know of some audio cables that may be resistant. (for those who may not know DEET is an ingredient in Bug repellant)

Just started a new show the Cameo and Deva5. I'm having difficulty routing things that in the analogue world seem straight forward. For instance, I have multi camera HD shoot and I want to monitor the IFB I have coming from the Headphone outs of the camera. I could use a RET on the analogue board What do I use on the Cameo? Thanks Jonathan

With things like Net Neutrality, FCC, and the simple fact that technology is going to effect every person on this planet, we need a President who understands technology to it's fullest. http://www.jedreport.com/2008/05/john-mccains-up.html This unfortunately, does NOT give me the warm and fuzzies. -Richard

This has come up often on shows that I've worked on, but this time they seem actually serious about following through on the idea. We've got an office space here at the stage that the company is considering turning into an ADR booth and control room. As the Production Sound Mixer I'm the "go to" guy for info, but it's out of my normal realm of expertise. Is there a service or individual that does this sort of consulting for a build out and gear up? Are there rental facilities that will rent all the appropriate gear...just like they do for editorial? Any ideas?...please and thank you. Thanks! ~pwp

Hey there Brain Trust, riddle me this... Okay I'm doing a show shot on 35, recording on the Deva 4 @ 48.048 , 30 nd. I'm trying to get my head around this... I play back the pre-record through speakers, straight playback no earwigs or live singing. I want to have them stripe ch#2 with TC to either display via Slate or recorded onto a separate track on the deva. Problem is if I record the TC track @ 48.048 onto the machine and they play it back @ 48 then the tc wont match. Should I have them pre pull up the pre record? and stripe with 30 nd. Have them stripe with 29.97, show a pb slate and not record the TC. This would be easy as fishin' cept for…
