RF Info and the FCC Licensing Project Mission Statement In order to ensure that the concerns, needs and issues of the thousands of professional sound recordists in the United States who use the UHF spectrum on a daily basis, can be heard by the FCC, it is imperative that as many users as possible obtain a license from the FCC. The basic goals of this project are: To educate Production Sound individuals who use radio equipment in the lawful use of these devices, and to understand the privileges and responsibilities of licensed operation. To remove the liability of unlicensed operation of wireless transmitters. The FCC can levy fines of up to $11,000, per trans…

Last Saturday.. I'm asleep in my nice warm bed. The phone rings about 5am. A producer calling. I couldn't make it out of my bed fast enough, but I called him right back. He says that his sound guy just got into a bad accident, and just totalled his car on the freeway. Can I make it there by 8am? So, this makes my brain start searching, trying to think about all the stuff I wanted to get done that day, or appointments that I had, or any other commitments I might have made. I asked him about the gig, and what does it entail. And I then asked what does the gig pay? The voice on the end says, $50 bucks.. I said, 50/ per hour? He says.. no, $50 bucks.. …

Fellow sound mixers! I wanted to get your feedback on Los Angeles non-union rates. I recently upgraded and bought more gear. So I wanted to share with you my gear and see what you guys charge. That way I am not under cutting other mixers or being offered less then a fair rate by clients. So again what would your labor rate and kit rate be? Also what would your kit include before you start charging a la cart? Thanks for your time with this. Below is what I currently have (1) Sound Devices 664 6-Channel mixer/recorder (3) Zaxcom TRXLA2.5 transmitters (2) Zaxcom QRX200 & QRX235 ENG receivers (3) Countryman B6 Lav mics + all mic accessories (1)…

I wanted to report my experience using the new Apple App., just released last Thursday called MovieSlate, from PureBlend Software. I and about ten other mixers have been beta testing it for well over three months. The overall concept is to have the Camera, Sound and Script all on a wifi network each writing their individual reports, networked so as slate changes, camera lens data and the sound log are all shared. The common tool is an Apple iPad, but it will also function on an iPhone and iPod Touch. At the end of the day our individual reports can be emailed to Editorial, Production etc. I look at it as a beautiful way to enter my sound log informat…

What kind of stories can you share about your work using them? It's truly hard to believe whole movies were recorded on them not for lack of quality but with using Tape. It must have been so much more work using tape then todays recorders. Any stories? I don't think many collectors have the opportunity to ask the people that used Nagra recorders every day in their career in sound. And another question - before the Stereo Nagra IVs and IVs-tc (time code), the sound was recorded in mono? All movies before were in Mono that can't be?

Yesterday Michael Miramontes came into the studio yesterday to watch us while we were mixing 12 monkeys. What we do is mix for a bit, then answer any questions that might arise. The issue of lavs came up, and we talked about the importance of them. I have seen in discussions, even here, that the opinion is, they are there as a backup in case the book is unusable. Well, that simply isn't true anymore. Especially in the world of television. The majority of what we use in a mix these days are lavs. Because of so many shoots are using two cameras, the boom is either impossible to get into the scene, or when it is, it's unuseable. So, make sure your lavs are in…

The background for reference. My cousin has LONG been obsessed with writing for television and just finished film school. We're a few days into shooting for an indie t.v. show that he wrote and we're producing ourself with volunteer actors etc... Our camera man is a professional photog/videographer and REALLY knows what he's doing. He uses DSLR so we're recording audio to a Zoom H4N via one boomed shotgun mic (even on indoor dialogue scenes!) to one channel and that's it. I used to do a fair bit of music recording of just myself and my wife singing as well as playing guitar and know a little about editing and just how recording in general works. I am far from under…

Um, Im very confused. We have our own private health care. Yet the nation will be gearing up with Obama care. There will be a 'tax' I keep hearing about. Will my check now be reduced even more by supporting others? Anyone out there know about this? I can't have MORE taken out. I'd love to hear from anyone knowledgeable about this. Thanks. Erpi

Hi, I am new to the site and the craft. I wanted to know if anyone here uses a bike as a method of transportation. I am not sure if it applies to mixers considering they have a cart, but i could be wrong. I figured boom operators and or sound utility men might have the ability.

Ok. I am currently in a huge debate about the mix down track... I have searched the topics, and cannot find any answers, so I am bringing the conversation to you all. I am being told: Mix tracks are obsolete, and unnecessary. With poly wav files, it is no different for post to sync a mix or the ISOs, so it makes no difference for post or for dailies. It is our responsibility as mixers to provide excellent ISOs, so post has everything they need to put it all together. Mixing boom and wireless together is not ideal in any situation. Mix tracks may have had a purpose when we only had two to four tracks to record to... But now, with 8-12 track, ISOs are the way to go an…

Tom, It now says on the website that the Tascam DR-10's are not available in the US. Why? I assume that means Canada as well. I really want a couple. How can I get my hands on some?

Out of curiosity. For myself, two items stick out. 1. Lectro Venue system - Very nice rack system that gives me great performance with power requirements well within my current battery system. 2. Powerx AA rechargeable batteries - Work great in my Lectro transmitters and love the fact that at the end of the day I'm not shoveling in handfulls of dead batteries to the trash or recycling.

Many of us do a lot of travel on airplanes and we now have another set of new regulations to make flying an even more unbearable event. Here are the new directives from the TSA on new "In Flight" rules: IN FLIGHT 1. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed: 1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior…

I'm new to the forum but glad to find it thanks to someone over at the Sony Vegas forum. My wife Sarah and I film and produce a PBS television series called Painting and Travel. We shoot on location and often auto traffic, etc is a problem as I'm doing one of my paintings on camera. I need to use a lavalier mike and we have two. One omni directional and one lavalier. Both sennheisser. I recently was told that an "un-sensitive" mike is what I need. I was not familiar with this term. Can anyone begin to clarify this and give me some suggestions as to what we might use. I didn't know it but apparently the mics come rated as -20db, -40db, etc. I'd sure like to get a mic…

I'm seeing all the latest pro wireless mic offerings advertised in the header here on jw, and pondering what the jw community, including manufacturers, retailers, and end users think about wireless pricing relative to a few developments in the production world: a) the fact that video camera pricing have dropped and keep dropping dramatically while offering buyers astounding image quality improvements and new features the impact item (a) above has had on production budgets, particularly the pressures it has placed on sound professionals to offer more gear and labor for lower and lower prices. c) Other items I haven't thought of but I'm sure the jw community ha…

This is Charlie, aka The Moose. He is a bog standard tabby but he is still a good looking cat in my opinion! Unfortunately we had to leave him back in New Zealand when my Mrs and I decided to shift back to London, he is now happily living with a friend on Aucklands North Shore. I miss him! I was recently approached by an American director and producer to do production sound for their feature - to be shot in India. It's a 35+ day shoot over 6/7 weeks, 5-day and 6-day weeks alternating. I am now being told by a co-producer (not the one i met, but someone with a bunch of Indie film experience) that their ballpark is 2500$ a week for everything: personnel, equipment and consumables. I was also told by them that they can get American crew to work on the project for this kind of money. I found this way off. I am planning on writing back saying that maybe there is a mismatch between what they think they need for their project versus what they may get for…

NP style batteries 1 2 3 4 5

Hi All forgive me if this topic has been covered already but what is the feeling about the longevity of NP style batteries. Mine need replacing for my fusion but I get the impression Down Under that they are a thing of the past now. That would be a pity as I have a couple of NP boots for powering wireless and IFB and I use them in my Fusion. Just want to check before investing in this technology again. Cheers Tony Johnson

It's a long and complicated story (not really a sad one), but I am now the owner of both a 633 and a MAXX. I do mostly documentary work and am trying to decide which is my main recorder and which is my backup. I am a long time Sound Devices user so there is/was a much steeper learning curve for the MAXX but there are many things that I like about it (size, weight, design, to name a few). My main problem with the MAXX is that I am uncomfortable recording to only a CF card. For years, I used my 744T, I left the CF card with production if I had to, and went home and downloaded from the hard drive so that I had my own record of the day's sound. I'd like to hear if this is…

Sampling rates 1 2 3 4 5

- Higher sample rates yield better results during manipulation. Elastic audio, noise reduction and other tasks performed by post every day yield fewer artifacts when recorded at 192/24. Post will often upsample before manipulation. This above quote taken from Brian Liston post on "What specs really matter" an interesting read and makes the point re artifacts heard when sound recorded at 48/24 is manipulated in post which nowadays is a common occurrence. On the hobbit we recorded at 96/24 for dial that was going to be manipulated after, ie Smaug/ necromancer and a few others. Does anyone else record at 96khz or higher on a regular basis on films?? Will it become t…
