Hey all I desperately need some advice. Apologies about the long post. I got hired on a Tuesday from a young director to go on set on Monday. Now, I'm in the 2nd week of production. The film has an one star actor, which is infamous for being "difficult". As a result a young boom operator as myself has been verbally intimidated by the guy, twice. But this is not my immediate problem. Also, I have to add that the production crew is very small. Three camera people (plus a trainee), three young graduates playing the ADs, PAs, etc, and me as a boom operator/ recordist, a first-time producer, a grip, a PA that turned spark and the director. I put myself…

Thought it might be a good idea to put together a list of where everyone is located so that if someone is looking for a mixer in a certain area they could check out the list. Adding contact info would be necessary of course. Since it's my idea, I'll go first. Eric Toline Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area audioetc@bellsouth.net 954-255-7628 P.S. If there are enough names added, perhaps Jeff could make a seperate heading for the mixers list.

Hi there, Documentary shoot coming up, in the past i would never trust 100% on the timecode when recording double system with a lock it's tc going into the cam's tc in. I would always do a boomclap or handclap to have a sync back up in case the lock it has an error or if my recorder tc is wrong. Do you guys count 100% on the lock it's tc and don't do a back up boom/hand clap on a documentary? Curious.

Hello all, last month I worked a gig, a big event some would say, and everything was great. the producers were super cool, the camera guy was great, the office people I talked to beforehand were also nice to deal with. I filled out all kinds of paperwork, which I sent them within hours of receiving, blah blah blah. Anyway, on my invoice the terms were Net 30 and today is day 30 and you guessed it, no check. I emailed them on August 1st and they responded with "Your check goes out this week." I know the mail is slow but not this slow. I have never had an invoice go unpaid so I'm not sure what to do other than send an email asking what's up. Should I charge a late f…

https://talkgadget.google.com/hangouts/extras/talk.google.com/soundie%20hangout?authuser=0&hl=en&eid=113298563688326896343# Don't know how many of you are yet on G+, but their video conference thingee inspires me... The above links to a soundie G+ hangout I plan to keep open all day today. After the EST sun is over the yardarm, I have what's left of S4's McCallum bottle ready to ingest, but prefer to consume it with friends Ah-hem. Perhaps the regular weekend video conference meeting that was successful in another community with which I am familiar would also prove successful for us in terms of extending and deepening our connections around the …

Any advice on recording in a moving car, or possibly van (mics, setup, etc)? It will be an improvised conversation between the front seat passengers. Part of it may take place on a gravel road. Hoping to avoid the need for any ADR. Thanks, Adam

I was at Location Sound Corp today while Sound Devices was showing off the CL-12 and slinging free grub to all the big knobs. I was dashing back and forth between rentals and sales when I saw a familiar, too-accessorized boonie-hat...Senator Mike Michaels !!! It made me realize how much I miss his presence here on jeff e jeff's wexler jam. I was already very late, and the big knobs were deep in conversation so I missed my chance to say hello to the Senator and Jeff again, as well as my second opportunity to introduce myself in person to Crew (whose vanity-plated Ram ProMaster looks outright intimidating). So hello again to the Senator ( miss you, Bossman), hello to Jeff,…

Ok, so I'm still quite a newbie when it comes to sound so please excuse my question if it sounds silly. Does anyone have advice as to how to kill/tone down an echo in a large room. I'm helping a friend out tomorrow with a student gig of his and so we will be shooting in a large warehouse/studio type location (floor is concrete with high ceilings). I noticed a slight echo when I did some preliminary testing. I was wondering if there were any tips you guys may have that can help me out. Any info is immensely appreciated. Thanks, MIke

It's been a while since I was asked for a half day and I'd like to fish around for some standards. I just wrapped a short 4-day doc shoot, the last day was about 4 hours and they've asked me to bill them for a half day. Would that be 80% of a full day or 60% or what? The full day rate was pretty good, what sort of break would you all cut them? Happy Mardi Gras! Dan Izen

I'm mostly working out of my bag on documentaries, shorts and a few times a year a commercial. I noticed that some of the time it is nicer if my bag hangs on a manfrotto (today I ordered a manfrotto monitor stand to put my bag on). Few things I experience; this way I'm able to control it and fully use it but don't carry the weight. I'm more flexible booming from one position. If needed I can mount another boom on the manfrotto to capture off camera dialoog. When building for the next scene it's really easy to move the manfrotto and have my own nice personal stand and space for sound. It's also handy for getting some space between transmitters and receivers in the bag…

This topic has been discussed on numerous other forums but I see these. On words used all of the time on jwsound so I thought I'd post. I hope this doesn't come off nitpicky, but micing, mic-ed, mic'ed are all not actual words. While they have become commonplace all over the web, a search in the Merriam-Webster dictionary shows that the transitive verb for microphone is mike. As in, I need to mike the actor, or the talent has been miked, or I am almost done miking the talent. I may be crazy but when I see the word 'micing' I think of little furry rodents. of course he word mic is a common abbreviation for the noun and is acceptable. Hope this clears th…

Id be interested in what peoples first investment was with their own hard earned cash in terms of sound gear and setting themselves up as a 'soundie'. Maybe state if it was for TV or for Film and if you can remember the cost. Maybe you hired or the gear was already there for you to use initially but at some stage you wanted your own "stuff', even if it was recording direct to a wax drum, I know there are some old timers out there...What was it? I did search the forums (probably not so well) so feel free to delete this thread if its has been discussed ad nauseum...

In a road race? Which lavs, which transmitters? Waterproof? Seems like a neoprene band would be deadly hot, but what else to use to stash the transmitter? I like mic bras for sports, but do runners hate them?

It is not long I frequent this place, but I just really liked that many great professionals here are very helpful to anyone with a problem or a question. This does not happen in Italy. Every professional, more or less important, it seems to be locked up in his ivory tower and does not show your willingness never the same. All this is bad, because in this way the figure of the location sound recordist is not highly regarded in the indie film or in low/no budget film, as opposed to the director or the director of photography. Sergio.

So in the football stadium sequence, Bane is seen holding an SM style Lectrosonics transmitter clutched in his hand, as he announces the fate of the crowd's crippling future. Without knowing what it is, most viewers would blow it off so... Blooper or Intentional?

So I was prompted to start this thread because of afewmoreyears' profile picture (thankfully I caught my iPad's attempt to correct a typo of 'profile' with 'orifice'). It's a great photo of, excuse my ignorance, a Nagra or other reel-to-reel. It looks a lot like the model of miniature "spy" Nagra I failed to win in a recent auction. I thought perhaps people could post the significance of their profile picture, unless it's just a boring photo like mine. Robert

No Room Tone? 1 2 3
by Matt- 63 replies

I have been on more than one shoot for a commercial recently where a particular AD in town has refused to get room tone at the end of the shoot day saying it is because, "Everyone would kill her if we stop for that at the end of the day." This after I asked for it earlier in the day. Admittedly, this translates to either, "I want to go home and don't care," or "I have absolutely no control of my set". But, this brings up the topic, how often are you able to get a full 30 seconds of room tone on your jobs? I have no problem on interviews, and calmer jobs. But this AD has done this to me a few times now and I'm starting to get tired of it. I know it makes post's j…

Until last year, the Lectrosonics SM/SMDB transmitters, calibrated for an output power of 50mW, could raise their power up to 100 mW and 250 mW. EU rules provide for years to a maximum of 50mW, but sometimes it was very useful to temporarily exceed this limit in conditions of particular crowd. From this year, this is no longer possible and this has led to further problems in Europe. In fact, according to a European decision, the 2010/267/EU, as from 1 January 2013, the frequency band 790-862 MHz (above block 30) will be used for terrestrial systems capable of providing electronic communications services (ie mobile phones, TX data, voice , broadband video, etc.). Th…

Hi guys i've been experiencing ringing in my ears ( tinnitus ) for the past couple of months. thought it is temporary and it will go away ... but after 2-3 months i've realized that it's sort of permanent. went to the audiologist and did a full Frequency tests , etc and all looked Clear. doctor said , it must be from listening to headphones for long period of time. the good thing is , when im distracted and busy doing something , i cant hear anything. but when it's quiet , i can say 70% of the time , i can hear that ringing mostly in my right ear. any of you guys having this issue ? any solution or tips to reduce it ? Thanks , and Stay H…
