Hello everyone, I am always curious as to what people include when they submit expendables lists to production at the start of a show. I know the basics are always the same: batteries, recording media, sound reports, topstick, and moleskin, hush heels. Last couple jobs I started putting mats on the list. I like being able to put down mats rather than try and put hush heels on everyone's feet. I usually include a few sound blankets, and a c stand or two. I'm curious as to what everyone else includes, or has included on past expendables lists. Thanks guys! Phil

I seam to have had a rash of Producers offering me jobs with a Flat rate for the whole job. Who the #*ck told these people that flat rate prices are the way things work in Hollywood. Next time someone tells me one flat rate, I think that I'm going to come unglued. I'm forced to respond as nice as I can, that Hollywood doesn't use a flat rate quotes, we use daily quotes here in LA. Everything runs on daily, crew, rentals, vehicles, trucks, equipment.. For example, lets say you have a production and for some reason they scrap a whole part of the script thus remove a production day.. do I then have to give back some of the money? I think not.. Or worse yet a day or two w…

So I have a short movie coming up out of town. This is the first time I have done a job with my equipment more than 12 road hours from Los Angeles. Shipping it out isn't the problem, since I will go about a week in advance for scouts and such, but coming back is an issue. We finish on a Monday, and if I pack it into a truck Tuesday, it would likely not arrive before Friday or the following Monday. This will be right in the middle of the TV season, where I get a lot of 2nd unit work. I would hate to be stuck turning down work because I don't have gear. Is it customary for people to charge for gear while it is in transit? How does this conversation go? This movie …

I've been asked to work on a classical music video. In this roll, I'll be doing things I've not done before. I have some ideas on how this could be done, but wanted to see if anybody here has worked on a music video before and how they did this. On playback, the producer has mentioned she wants to be able for this opera singer to see the words for lip syncing. She mentioned she doesn't think they need a teleprompter, but more of something which would show him how long to hold notes, etc... Honestly, I'm a bit lost on this one. My thought is to import the song and timecode strip it, so I can sync the slate to the song. As far as playback goes, a simply play it back…

Working Comic-Con on a Mocumentary yesterday, and our film crew got the general idea of a distrust of the media. Finding interviewees, was quite a challenge. Perhaps all those years of the media making fun of the 'geeks' has taken it's toll. Or perhaps beyond the costumes, there isn't much too tell. A stark contrast from LA as you usually have no trouble at all getting people in front of a camera. We ended up wasting loads of footage on nothing if you ask me. Overall a huge cluster#@$k. I think they expected 120 thousand, but I wouldn't be surprised if that number moved up into the 200 thousand range as it go so packed we couldn't move down the carpet. The camera ke…

Has anyone dabbled with getting paid from a producers credit card, through paypal, or any other type of service like this? I just added paypal to my web site: www.curleysound.com. I think it might make the process go quicker and easier if they just charge it, and forget about it for a while, and we get our money (minus a 2% tax deductible transaction fee) today.

Hey jwsounders, Today, I encountered a very odd sound from almost all of my recordings and wanted to see if someone had the same problem before. I had a very simple shoot in a small and somewhat lively room. Most of the time involved one actor screaming and yelling, nothing else. So I chose my preferred microphone, the CMC641, to record all of the INT dialogues (only INT today). So I chose to use AA batteries for simple power usage (have always worked very well in all my devices) on my SD302. Connected the Schoeps to the SD302 and began recording. The first take is listed below. During that first take, I noticed that my audio had some kind of weird "gurgling" + …

Hi JWS Forum Members:-D I am posting of an open letter I received from a good friend of mine. A local 695 brother. I back him all the way. G$$ ============== Hello all, This is an open letter to IA 695 and it's members concerning a problem facing Boom operators and the sound team in general working on High Def Commercial shoots. With the changing times and the changing technologies, it is apparent some staffing changes need to be addressed concerning our job functions on these HD commercial film shoots. While on these shoots certain job functions such as the running of the HD Audio lines to the cameras, as well as the extended ti…

Hey folks, I'm wondering if any of you have recommendations for full coverage insurance for my audio packages. The one's I've contacted are expensive and don't cover lots of things like gear stolen out of a car's trunk, water damage, etc. Thanks! -Chris

Dear Group, for a feature film postproduction, we need to dub some voices in NYC. Are there any suggestions for an ADR-Stage? The project is Low-Budget but the studio rent will be covered. We would appreciate an experienced ADR-recordist. Technical and acoustical conditions should fit a professional production. Kind regards Benjamin Hörbe @ ROTOR postproduction facilities Tempelhofer Ufer 36 10963 Berlin GERMANY

Well, yesterday I had a one day industrial gig. We were going to shoot at a local art theatre, then do finish it up at the University of Texas' student union theatre. We were taping and interviewing one of the many business motivational speakers. I had brought my laptop in case I needed to burn copies of the DVD-RAM onto standard DVD (on small productions like this, the post production people sometimes have issues with DVD-RAM). I also figured I would check my email if wi-fi was available. I had some time to kill while folks were still setting up things, and pulled out my laptop to check email. Turns out there wasn't any wi-fi hot spots available. Fine. I put my lapto…

Hi there, me and another sound guy are shooting a feature in the Bahamas and today we've come across a "clicking" sound in our line. As the boom op i am hearing it on my end and its going all the way to the track. It sounds kinda like the clicking of a clock. We are using a Schoeps CMC6 with a 744T as the recorder. Any help would be great. I have heard stories of the Schoeps acting up in high humidity situations could this possibly be the problem?

Hello everyone I have only been in the production sound game for a little while now, and most of my experience have been dealing with school projects, and now that I have graduated I would like to continue doing sound. I really love doing production sound, and have a few pieces of my own equipment. I currently have a sound devices 302 mixer, a AT835b shotgun mic, and a boom pole. So my question is where do I began looking for work? form what I have have been told and have observed myself is this industry works by word of mouth. I look on craigslist, mandy and, entertainmentcareers.net, but I was wondering if there were any other websites out there so I can get a start? If…

So, I'm flipping through the TV and stumble across a show called Speeders on TruTV (I didn't even know this channel existed). As I watch the show (it's basically about people who get caught with some type of traffic violations), I noticed that both one of the NJ officers and CHP officers have two lavs on. One is on the left lapel, the other on the right lapel. I haven't ever seen this. Any idea why they would do this? Is one mic maybe something used by the officer to go along with the cameras most have in their cars now? Wayne

Over on the RAMPS group there's a long thread about who owns the recordings until your paid. I'm of the opinion that I own the media and the sound on it until I'm paid for the work that I've done. In some cases when payment is promised at wrap and it's not forthcoming as agreed to, I've held the "tapes" until payment was made. Opinions please. Eric

This revision says 4/2005 After being denied a rental of $40 for an extra wireless, CBS sends me the new equipment list. Granted it is dated 4/2005 I know the rental gurus will price this out, but CBS is still paying a killer $75 for all these toys. Anyone else find this to be BS or is it just me. 2 Years ago, I worked on a film called "Earl's Your Uncle". A young actor by the name of Daeg Faerch, played the part of a flashback main actor on the film. The following year I worked with him again, in "Rattle Basket". I just now noticed him in the lastest Hancock Trailer.. looked up his IMDB, and he's in 7 more films by next year!! Good for him.. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1698761/ I must have worked with 100 plus actors this year. You never know which one of these actors are simply going to get lucky do you.. -Richard
