Interesting article in the L.A. Times today about the efforts by the owners of the legendary Capital Records building to preserve their underground echo chambers. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-capitol23apr23,1,3150378.story "No! No-o-o-o! No-o-o-o-o-o! That plea from Hollywood is reverberating through Los Angeles City Hall as officials try to decide whether a 16-story tower should be built next to the landmark Capitol Records building." "But Capitol executives are trying to stop the multimillion-dollar project because of fears that pile-driving and excavation for the three-level underground garage will damage one-of-a-kind, below-ground echo chambers that…

Just started a new show the Cameo and Deva5. I'm having difficulty routing things that in the analogue world seem straight forward. For instance, I have multi camera HD shoot and I want to monitor the IFB I have coming from the Headphone outs of the camera. I could use a RET on the analogue board What do I use on the Cameo? Thanks Jonathan

Hey there Brain Trust, riddle me this... Okay I'm doing a show shot on 35, recording on the Deva 4 @ 48.048 , 30 nd. I'm trying to get my head around this... I play back the pre-record through speakers, straight playback no earwigs or live singing. I want to have them stripe ch#2 with TC to either display via Slate or recorded onto a separate track on the deva. Problem is if I record the TC track @ 48.048 onto the machine and they play it back @ 48 then the tc wont match. Should I have them pre pull up the pre record? and stripe with 30 nd. Have them stripe with 29.97, show a pb slate and not record the TC. This would be easy as fishin' cept for…

My son passed this along to me. It is a simple but entertaining look at our place on the planet (and what we should be doing about it). The Story of Stuff Thanks to David Wexler, Natural Media Research - Jeff Wexler Note: after viewing this several times myself and listening to comments by several others, I think this piece is a little too simplistic and one-sided. This is my conclusion several days later. I will not remove the link but I am certainly less enthusiastic about this piece than I was originally. (this comment added on April 22, 2008).

Last night I said here (http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=2338.msg16207#msg16207) that I would compare my experience working with the Cantar X (1.88) with my Deva 5. The obvious major difference is the way each recorder allows you to get access to major features and make changes. The Cantar is based around a mechanical approach of utilizing various buttons, the "Main Selector" and what it calls the "Triple Crown". The Deva also uses buttons but they are mostly short cuts to access it's touch sensitive screen, where you can set every feature. (You can see photos of the Cantar and Deva at the bottom of my lengthy post to relate to what I'm blathering about.) …

Just for kicks, and also because of a plethora of MOS and flashback work today, I browsed through the myriad of posts here on various topics going back to 2006. I'm amazed and delighted at the wealth of advice, information, opinion, humor, allegory, occasional but rare contention and outright plain helpfulness and assistance that this forum contains. None of the bitching that occurs elsewhere on the net, and even on those rare occasions when it has the potential to do so here, it seems to be handled in a diplomatic even genteel manner, which is one reason I think, for the overwhelming attendance of qualified, educated and experienced contributors. There's enough material …

I just received my MagicJack which is yet another way to make phone calls using VOIP. I really don't NEED any other options, I have tried them all, but the MagicJack is intriguing. It's cost, both the hardware and the service, are the lowest I have seen (just short of FREE) and its ease of use will make Voice Over IP technology truly accessible to masses. It combines many of the things we already can do with Skype (which is essentially free unless you want a real phone number) and Vonage (one of the first paid services I had for years but have since dropped) and of course iChat (requiring paid service from Apple --- and I'm sure there are many other services, some Windows…

I'm curious about what information is recorded as a slate by mixers using non linear devices, Deva, SDs, Cantar et al. I'm fairly minimal in the information that I record on an audio slate but I'm wondering if I should be a little more forthcoming in the unlikely event that media and sound reports become separated somehow. I don't have a problem and post have never brought up the subject, but I'd like to hear what you guys consider pertinent information as it applies to slating the media. (I still can't break the habit of of 1k tones at the end of each take) Thanks Mick

I am in the tropics and shooting on boats around salt water and sand, and the biggest problem I am having is wind protection. I am dealing with 30 knot winds, and convertibles. I have my shotguns in full(High wind covers and furry) Zeppelin rigs and am still getting wind cutting through. The Lavs have been a nightmare! After day one, I have been trying various techniques with no perfect solution. The wind cuts through no matter what. The shirts are acting like flags and just flapping in the wind. My only solution is to spray down the talent with spray adhesive and stick the shirts to their whole body. Somehow I don't think it's gong to go over too well. I have the lav's b…

Since Mick Fowler posts here, let me publically apologize for a really dumb error in his article. Several of us proof read the magazine's articles, but not the layout galleys. So the headline of his name was accidently mis-spelled. Sorry MICK! I will now commit seppuku (hari-kari ). The rest of you can read the new issue online at http://www.coffeysound.com/pages.php?pageid=3

Like many of you, I'm sure, I worked in Live TV a while back (and occasionally now). It's always a rush, and even though stressful at times, I always enjoy watching other live programs enter trainwreck status. I was watching CNN today while Hillary was taking questions from eager supporters at her Montana Campaign. A lady was holding a Shure wireless handheld like this one: Hillary was using one, and all was well. The question asker was asking her a question, I could almost read her lips she was so exasperated. The problem? The only thing I heard was "ffffft fft ffffff" It's something we all dread, and something that can happen any time, given the nature of the …

60 MINUTES broadcast a segment a few weeks ago that was the most thorough and compelling story regarding the necessity of SLEEP in all of our lives and the consequences of chronic sleep deprivation that is so prevalent in our world. I have posted the full segment, less advertising, on my website. SEE IT HERE Note: I'm not crazy about my coding on my website for this video. I may take it down and optimize it better for streaming. Regards, Jeff Wexler

This is a raw 'newbie' question - so forgive my very basic post: I'm co-producing a documentary for theatrical release which begins production next month in Japan. We'll be shooting on a Varicam with an HVX200 as a second camera. We will be using a separate recorder for sound (a double system). One question that I have had to deal with is whether to use time code on the project. I believe it will help us log our footage and sync sound better in post, but I've been getting a lot of pushback from those who feel it is time-consuming and will make interview subjects less casual and more stressed about their answers. Any comments? Thanks. Mark Austin

I did my first music video playback yesterday and I want to say it was much more difficult than I thought as we kept changing frame rates so I had to keep swapping tapes. My question for future playback jobs can I use a 744t instead of a PD-4 for playback? What set up do most of you use for playback jobs?

My fiancee, a Portland native, has been steadily increasing pressure on me to consider moving back from NYC, where I am comfortably working as a 52 boom guy and occasional mixer, to Portland, where I would have no union card, and no idea how to get work. The fact is, I'm eventually going to acquiesce, even if i hold out for a couple more years, especially if we have a kid. Any Portland people out there with advice? How easy would it be to join the local? Are the books 'closed'? Is there enough work out there to support another boom op? Or should i consider taking up another line of work? fishing, A

To my L.A. based Sound Mixer colleagues: Has anyone successfully gotten jobs from the "Find Film Work" newsletter offered on the IATSE 695 website? Just curious if it's worth the $7/month. Thank you. Lee Ascher Los Angeles

The low-power television industry is facing a "death sentence" because of a flaw in the government's plan to force broadcasters to shift to digital broadcasting and has asked a federal judge for a reprieve. The Community Broadcasters Association, which represents owners of small television stations, wants the Federal Communications Commission to ban all digital set top converter boxes that are not equipped to receive an analog signal, a request that has the potential to derail the biggest broadcasting transition since color television. As of Feb. 18, 2009, all full-power television stations in the U.S. are required to stop broadcasting an analog signal. Anyone who g…

This one is for the old timers: A good friend of mine is propping on oval office set for a Reagan-era TV address. He asked me what would have been typical for the sound gear at that time. This is a little before my time and I can only guess so I'm asking the group. What would have been typical headphones, LAV, where they booming on those addresses? No Portabrace I'm sure but what was a typical mixer bag? Thanks, Glen P.

I'm looking to use my MacBook for some playback. On my current show there is a lot of telephone call playback where they want me to play back the dialog from the completed scene during the filming of the scene to be intercut. The editors have been providing me with a CD from the take they are going with. I want to delete the audio from the sections where you can hear the script super reading the other side of the call, and in so keep the timing in tact. Or maybe break the call up into pieces and assign keyboard strokes to each piece? Any ideas/experiences? Thanks, Rich
