Maybe this is already happening for you guys, but in case it's not... If you're ever unable to go on recce, you should ask them to record videos of the location instead of photos. Some of the location's audio issues might become apparent.

I'm trying to help a now-retired client dispose of several long-form multicam series worth of Betacam and Digibeta tapes that he can no longer afford to store. All the places I used to send tapes to for recycling are gone--does anyone have any suggestions for a company still doing that work?

I started a thread like this on China travel, and got some great help. Thank you! I am also curious about Vietnam. I'm traveling to Vietnam soon with a tourist visa. Does anyone have experience shooting in Vietnam with a tourist visa? We are travelling into DaNang. We will fly either from Shanghai to DaNang, or from HongKong to DaNang. Trying to predict whether a full audio kit will be allowed, or if I'll have to pare way down (I need the full kit for my work in China right before this, but if customs in Vietnam is bad, I'll have to tough it out on smaller, less pro looking gear). My camera guy is also trying to decide whether to bring a real camera or jus…

I'll stop calling this the NEW new site very soon, but here is a tip for navigating the NEW new site: This is what I have been doing which may work for you as well (even though I have to read everything no matter what so my viewing habits are different). View New Content button in upper right corner is your first stop (and later you can Bookmark to always get the same search result). Once you have chosen what you want to view, the time period or unread posts, whatever, you can use the icons rather than the title text to go right to the most recent posts.

I did have the pleasure of Vin's company in Bombay, March 2015. He is a generous host and excellent gourmet. We had drinks at the Taj Palace Hotel, dinner at "Trishna's" and a really delicious Lamb dish prepared at the "Casa de la VIn" in North Bombay. Vin is coming to the US in April for NAB and other Tech visits. However, Vin has expressed concerns about our American toilet hygiene. Toilet paper is not unknown in India, but my informal survey suggests about 20% of the country uses it outside of Hotels and airports. Typically, in India, there is a thumb activated hose near the toilet, wether it be the sitty kind or the squatty kind of toilet. 3-5 second…

Hey Group, I'm a post-sound mixer working on a doc about a Japanese pilot who was involved in the only mainland US bombing during WWII, near Brookings, Oregon. Fascinating story, really. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=36393.0 I'm trying to get a sense of what it might have sounded like. This was a small seaplane, a Yokosuka E14Y with a 340 hp Hitachi Tempu 12 9 cyl engine. An eyewitness to the attack (he was in a nearby fire outlook) described it as very odd sounding- like someone kicking a can down the street. So, probably much different sounding than a typical seaplane. Maybe he was throttled back. Who knows. Thanks.

Any idea where to look for pictures/catalogs of 1970's professional audio equipment, specifically boom poles & mics? This is for a 70's period film project so I'm looking for boom operator gear that could go with the vintage Nagra's we have. I'm having a heck of a time finding what was used in the 70's despite trolling through many behind-the-scenes photos, etc. I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction on the web or elsewhere- my thanks in advance! -Classic

About 2 years ago, after we finished our run on the musical TV show, "Smash", my team and I worked on a small musical film called "The Last 5 Years." We shot in NYC for about 4 weeks. It was an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name and the goal from the Producers and Director was to record the vocals live as much as possible. They pre-recorded all of the songs just in case, but in the end, I believe there was only 1 song that was predetermined to be a "playback" song. Shooting of the film went great, and it was a fun experience. However, it was a small movie and even though it starred Anna Kendrick and was directed by the screenwriter of "The Fisher King," i…

Hello i was wondering if someone kindly could help me, i am about to start a postponed Vipercam shoot using Flash Mags in some scenes and am i right in thinking you cannot feed two tracks of audio into a Flash Mag, the flash mag doesnt have audio inputs, the only way you can get audio into a flash mag is via the single camera mic on the Viper? i assume with the Flash Mag you treat it as a Mag of film and therefore it is mute rushes until you sync it to DAT/DEVA etc. Many Thanks inadvance for any help Richard Paterson

I am looking to talk with any of you with some experience with this type of workflow. I have been working on a VR project and I am looking to pick some other mixers brains about some aspects of recording in this format. Please feel free to contact me offline, via email or PM. Thanks!

Hello, I'm going to be in Bristol from October 8th to October 12th. Anyone want to meet up for a drink on Saturday, October 12th? Anything I must do while there? Best fish and chips in town? Local stuff, not touristy stuff. We are also focusing on Thornbury. An actor friend grew up there, so I'll solicit advice from him about what to do there. But any additional info would be appreciated. Robert

I work with a production company in Minneapolis and they want to purchase a voice over booth for their new office. I'll be the one doing the recording so I certainly have a vested interest in this thing. Our current office has a massive (overly constructed) VO booth that I built and it works quite well. But, we're moving to new offices for the next 12-18 months before buying a new building. So, in the mean time we need a very good VO booth that is easy to setup and then torn down and transported a year from now. We can't do a build-out in the new office space for various reasons. I'm thinking either the double walled Whisper Room, something by GK Acoustics, Industrial…

Hi all. A friend of mine wants to pursue working as a VO artist for local radio commercials and such, and asked me to help him with a demo recording. I told him I could help with that, no problem, but wouldn't have the first clue as to getting the demo into the right hands. Anyone here have any experience doing this sort of stuff? My best guess is to just cold call the local radio stations and ask to speak with their marketing dept or something like that. Thanks for any advice!

When vocally slating a take, eg: 52e take 1 , is it ok to leave out the (word) take, and just say "Fifty two easy one" or eg: 88a take 1 "eighty eight apple one " or "two" "three" "four" 'Five" etc. This seems to only work well when there is a letter after the number. I was wondering if this is an acceptable practice and if others guys/gals are doing that way? KKS.

So we all have this idea that around 1 kHz is the average freq for human voice. Maybe it's between 800 and 2,000 Hz? I've read how our hearing is particularly attuned to those frequencies because of this. My recent activities have brought this into question. I just got a free phone app called Pano Tuner, which features an active, moving note-and-frequency display. I've been experimenting with trying to hold pitches and guess at notes (learn perfect pitch), which is super fun. My lowest note is about 96 Hz in between A and G flat. (Throat singing can bring that down to about 56 Hz.) My absolute highest pitch is around 1446 Hz, between F and G flat. (But I have p…

For the current show I am working on post production is always behind and wanting new voice overs. So I suggested I could record them with my Tascam Hd-P2 Recorder and send them Via You send it. Everyone acted like this is the greatest invention ever even though I have send transcription this way for a long time. I am just curious how many of you record voice over in the field like this and upload it. I am happy to get the extra rent every time I use the hard disk Recorder along with my "Upload Fee" for renaming and dumping the audio. I just want to know how many of you do this. This is a pretty big company with many shows and I have been told I am the only person who has…

I've been called to record voice-overs tomorrow for a commercial. It's in a house. No video, which is different from my usual. I can get the job done, but then I started wondering pro/cons of all the following and decided to throw the question on here: Here's what I have as my options. Thoughts?
