I'm thinking of using a Ribbon Mic for voiceover on a feature that I am currently working on. Anybody here experience with ribbons used for this? What I'm looking for is that warm and silky sound (Nat King Cole, Sinatra and so on) Also microphone preamp... Witch type and brand... //Christian

I've been called to record voice-overs tomorrow for a commercial. It's in a house. No video, which is different from my usual. I can get the job done, but then I started wondering pro/cons of all the following and decided to throw the question on here: Here's what I have as my options. Thoughts? Most electronic equipment is designed to operate at voltage levels of 120 volts in North America or 230 volts in Europe. Occasionally some very current hungry equipment might be powered from 208 volts in North America. Regardless of the power line voltage, power supplies inside the electronic equipment convert this AC voltage into much smaller DC voltages that power the integrated circuits and transistors which in turn do the work inside the preamp, mixing console, graphic equalizer or amplifier. Voltage surges are a commonly recognized but somewhat misunderstood power quality phenomenon. They are typically hundreds or even thousands of volts in amplitude, …

More good writing from Gary Dunham below. IMPORTANT: voting NO is NOT a vote for a strike --- the powers that are fear mongering and are very scared that the membership will exercise its lawful and responsible right to vote. Ron Kutak has even gone so far as to subvert the constitution and by-laws, declaring that the members votes are only a guideline and the ultimate decision will be made, sort of like the electoral college version of democracy. from Gary Dunham: …"And Ron stated that our votes, once cast, will be 'represented' as a sort of electoral college, instead of treated as a general election, which is what the membership has always been led to believe." I…

An interesting thread has emerged on Facebook's "Freelance Sound Mixers & Recordists for TV/Film" regarding VER. Interesting dialogue that speaks to the constant flux of our industry. It harks back to the days when the major studios provided equipment for sound mixers, until mixers had the audacity to purchase equipment and charge rentals to those productions. I see the existence of Jeff's forum, and the Facebook forum, as roughly separated by the old guard/new guard. Yet thankfully, both exist in each. However, the mass-production methods of reality TV has drawn a youthful, albeit impressive voice, high in number, as evidenced in the Facebook forum. They face …

This is a really specific issue but any advise would be appreciated. I picked up a used VR Field a while back and I noticed that the firmware on there (Narrowband - 4.0) is out of date by many years (4.0 was released in 2008, the current 5.5 is from 2013). I'm a Mac guy but I have access to a Windows 8 machine so I tried installing the LecNet software which went fine, but because it's Windows 8, the USB drivers won't install. I looked at the manual and it seems that it needs a Windows XP or 2000 machine? I'm not even sure where I could find one of those!

There seems to be quite a vogue for VR production right now. Some aspects of the work I've seen I don't quite understand the appeal of vs the work involved to do it--like the ability to look away from the talent at what's behind the camera, the floor, the ceiling...? But it's early days--the great creative cinematic minds of our time haven't taken this challenge on yet, that I know of. Meanwhile....how to record for this medium? Cameras that see everywhere (I guess), the need (I think) for omni-hearing Ambisonic mic techniques....it struck me that a successful sync sound VR production would need to control the shooting environment much MORE than we usually do these …

As you all know sometimes we are hired as an employee and sometimes we are hired as a contractor. So at tax time I get a stack of W2s and 1099s. I recently purchased a home. During the application process they were not able to use any of my W2 income because I "no longer work for that company." However, the 1099 income applied to my sole proprietorship and was all counted. I barely squeaked by with my 1099 income but I had to jump through a ton of hoops. My mortgage broker said I should've put my W2 income on my Schedule C. But I don't have a clue how to do that and two accountants I spoke to didn't either. Any ideas? Thanks

Does anyone know the policy on walk away meal breaks? The crew and I were driven around for our shoot in a 15 passenger van and when lunch time came we were told it was a walk away. No one had their personal vehicles. We stopped in a strip mall with a few places to eat. Union shoot - Major big production Company. Anyone know IATSE policy? El Cheapo Production Company...... Thats what I think.... We were all pretty surprised. Not a money issue, just a really green Assistant Production Manager. By the way, Production did NOT pay for lunch. Let me know what your thoughts are... Thank you all.... pshap

Quotes from Ken Mantlo regarding WalMart: If Walmart is such a horrible place to work at, then why do people work there? We are all a sum of our choices. Good or bad. We work were we work because of past and present choices that we've made. Good or bad. No one but the individual is to blame. I am a proponent of capitalism. Other systems have failed miserably. I understand Ken's points and they carry some truth. But, I would have to say that I'm in pretty vigorous disagreement with him. I disagree with his conclusions but I also disagree with what I perceive to be the underlying attitude. I'll address some of that, obliquely, in subsequent posts. David W…

I love listening to Walter, huge influence in my life and the approach to movie-making. A little too intellectual for many, too full of himself and his theories for some, but I have really put many of these concepts to use even in our lowly craft of production sound mixing. “How do you want the audience to feel? If they are feeling what you want them to feel all the way through the film, you’ve done about as much as you can ever do. What they finally remember is not the editing, not the camerawork, not the performances, not even the story—it’s how they felt.” Read the whole article HERE

Was anyone shooting in the Warner Center in Woodland Hills mall this morning 1/5? I walked in to use the ATM and saw a crew, I wanted to say hello, but I had a bus to catch.

AUDIO (not including lav / body pack connectors) F TA3, F TA5, F Lemo, and just to be complete, F Fischer (not the Larry type). Why can't we just commit to having full size XLR connectors for I/O? Nearly unbreakable, quick and easy field repairs, and highly reliable. Machine to machine mass connection moving towards AVB/Dante, I'm ok with that, but isn't my biggest priority. I consider it a step up from DB shells. POWER Am I the only one that absolutely hates the 761K connector? Connector density with a screw on fitting makes it a bitch to patch cables in a tight bag. (Zaxcom Micplexer designer - your killing me with the 761/SMA/Zaxpaq standoff positioning) I…
