Just curious, has anyone ever worn a life jacket while rigged up for ENG? I have an offshore job coming up next month, I've been on boats before and never worn one, always thought I could ditch the rig quickly enough but, you never know... Would a self inflating type be a good choice? Just curious as to what other mixers have encountered or used. Any certain weight factors involved in selecting a vest for these purposes? Thanks, ed

I’ve posted here a few times for advice on my audio recording requirements but trying to finalize the last parts of my audio setup. I purchased for testing and plan on using a Diety S-Mic 2 (a moisture resistant mic) with a foam windscreen connected to a preamp that’s fed into a remote motion activate camera and will be recording video. I will visit the site once a month to swap memory cards, but the setup will be deployed 365 days a year..so wind, rain, snow, heat, etc. The camera and preamp will be in a waterproof case but the mic will be outside in the elements. A microphone technical support agent suggested that I need to create something that stops the mic and w…

Hi there!, My name is Pablo, and I'm new to this community that by the way, I find it completely amazing. This is my first post, and I wanted to talk about some ways of getting gigs, I live in NYC but this can be useful to anybody in U.S. I believe. The first website I find myself using all the time, is Craigslist.com, I can find some gigs around there ( almost always low budget productions ) but is very good to keep the work going during the dry periods. The second one I use the most is Mandy.com, where you can find better profile gigs, but it requires more time to find them. The third place I look is Productionhub.com, I like this one, be…

Have been reminded that we've been hanging out together every weekend for a year. A year. Well, a bit more than a year, but have never been good at hitting anniversaries on the day. Plan to pour a glass later in celebration. It's been a successful endeavor, for I've made deeper friendships with colleagues than I ever thought possible, and my professional life is more rich as a result. Dare say I'm not alone in that conclusion. Good for us.

Anyone out there on an Amazon show getting daily rate rather than weekly? I'm heading into some negotiations and I've been told Amazon will NOT allow daily. I'm having a hard time believing that but have yet to hear otherwise from anyone. I'd love to be able to negotiate upwards and am wondering where folks are in negotiating on shorter series. Thanks from me and my crew. SH

I am a Re-Recording Mixer by trade, but my second love is recording sound effects and ambiences, so Im not very save with lavs. I need to speak to my production mixer (for the lack of a better term) about interviews he does. I have a female lav recording that "snaps" on consonants like the C and K in the word cake. To the point I have to make and edit in front of said consonant, and do a hard fade up. What do I tell this person, is it the way he mounted the lav?, Is it a bad lav? Ill upload a clip Tuesday if need be. Thanks

Background: I have some audio knowledge, but probably less than 99% of all of you when it comes to film sound. Clip: Question: What is going on in this clip?!!!!! Why is the mixer/recorder manipulating the faders on nearly every syllable of the actors' lines? Wouldn't this be audible? What is the purpose? Is this SOP for you guys? What am I missing? This clip has bothered me since I saw it a year ago. The guy is using an Aaton Cantar, so one would assume he knows his stuff. Appreciate you all helping to solve the mystery.

Hi all. So, I'm working with an out of town production company, and due to a mix up early on, some of my audio was recorded at the wrong frame rate. When the assistant editor tried to convert them in Wave Agent, the program wouldn't import the files. I tried it here with my back up files, and it worked fine. Another set of files she had converted just fine in Wave Agent, and there was no difference in the settings or equipment used on the two sets of audio files in discussion. One, she converted fine, the other, no dice. Yet, both converted just fine on my computer. Any thoughts about this behavior?

Welcome to Lev whom John Coffey seems to think is our first director here on my Discussion Group. I looked Lev up on IMDB and interestingly enough he is credited with doing the sound on a movie that I was credited as having done --- "Ski School"in 1991. Well, I did NOT do that movie but it took me some time to get my credit, which was in error, taken off IMDB. For some totally unexplained reason my name showed up on both "Ski School" and "Ski Patrol" and I had nothing to do with either! In any case, welcome aboard! Regards, Jeff Wexler

Unfortunately, When you combine idiots that have NO business being in the film biz, and inexperienced kids that think this is easy money.. This happens.. http://www.wafb.com/video?clipId=10600852&autostart=true and.. its going to get worse as more people pile in, thinking this is a 'live my dream' plan. -Richard

I've been working on this higher budget short film, that's filled with many students. Most of these students are wana-be film producers themselves.. So, as you can imagine, many have been coming over to my cart, and asking lots of questions.. most about cost and such. To my shock, many newbie producers are just giving me some real horror stories out there, involving sound mixers. Apparently, a whole lot of (i call them people) are posing as 'sound mixers', and going out on jobs.. They show up to the set (or sometimes not), with only a zoom and a boom, and just do a shit job. This is why you see those 100/day sound jobs, because people are taking them, so producers…

Interested in what other types of Aural recording folks do? I play in a band and really enjoy recording (though I am by no means a pro). I also make beats and have begin recording samples. I am also interested sound effects, samples, recordings from nature (my droid is laden with animal ring tones).
