Hey everyone. I need some advice. I want to record sfx, both hard fx and foley, not to much ambience stuff but i still want to have a decent sound for that aswell. But mostly close proximity, focused sounds that i can process in post, and experiment. Especially pitch shifting and slowing down samples. I want to find a good microphone setup. I currently own 1 sennheiser 8040 and i was thinking about getting another one, and also 1 sennheiser mkh 8050. Would it be a good idea to have the 8040s as stereo sides, and then have the 8050 as mid/center microphone for the extra detail and focus. So 2x cardioid as sides, 1 super cardioid as cent…

I have 2 questions about yesterday's Super Bowl. 1) Prince's concert at half time was in the rain with no roof or protection over the stage. With all the electrical sound and lighting equipment on stage, would that not have been a huge safety issue? 2) The TV cameras had rain on the lenses throughout the game. I have seen in a rental house a motorized spinning disk to go in front of a camera lens to protect it from water. Don't these devices work and why wouldn't they have been used on such a huge show?

I'm looking for suggestions about how to handle multiple, (3) actors in full body robot like costumes. They need to have full duplex coms with each other and the director. The production said do you have comteks for the actors. Yes, but do you understand that the actors own dialogue need to be iso'd (is that a word) from their comtek feed otherwise it will feed back to them and cause a distracting echo that will likely be too much for their own intelligibility. Another problem is the 2 way coms I'm familiar with like the HME systems that the camera departments use; have a large headset and boom mics which probably wouldn't work in a full body enclosed costume. Any other…

Hiya friends: In the Zaxcom ERX series manual, it says: "TIP: There are several smart phone apps that will scan what wi-fi frequencies are being used in your area. This can be useful in selecting a clear frequency." I just looked on the App Store and have found nearly a hundred different versions of this, none of which seem exactly right for our purposes in this application. Can anyone recommend an app that's working for them to help choose Zaxnet frequencies? Thanks in advance, E.

I fear we are headed for disaster as more and more companies start selling devices and adapters that operate on the wi-fi freq. of 2.4 Ghz. My schedule has been filled with three shows this year. Two out of the three shows were using the 2.4 Ghz Starlink systems provided by VER. The other show used an RF version of the same system. After the Starlink system shutdown the Wi-fi for the business we were working with on the first show the DP turned down the power. I planned on running the Cl-WiFi with my 788. The adapter worked great at home, but on location, even 1 foot away my Iphone would not connect. They had a tech come and change wifi channels, still occasiona…

Pretty cool: after training with wide angle images + sound from artificial stereo head + mono sound, a deep neural learned to - generates binaural sound - isolates sound sources from video+mono audio alone. See https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.04204 http://vision.cs.utexas.edu/projects/2.5D_visual_sound/ This is only the beginning... In the future you may imagine, for example, an AI that focus/extract the relevant sound when you zoom in a high resolution image in post, etc.

So I've been experiencing some issues since upgrading to the newer 2.61 firmware for the 744t. It deals with TC and is a MAJOR issue. I have contacted Sound Devices and am still waiting for a reply. I am in EXT TC - AUTO REC mode, being fed TC from a record deck. Output of 744t TC out to a FF800 Audio input, for Boom Recorder. The TC on the deck tape and the TC in Boom Recorder are accurate and locked. However the TC on the 744t is off by 26.07 - 26.10 SECONDS early. This happens on 75% of the takes. I have the TC HOLD set to 3 seconds and preroll set to 2 seconds to help insure a steady code is coming before it rolls. I have the a 1 second preroll set for Boom Recorder. …

Talk about tripping over dollars to save pennies- Just did a shoot today. Between the Mexican border and Canadian border there is 2000 miles of beach on the United States west coast to choose from. I get the call sheet and notice that they have picked Dockweiler Beach Los Angeles for their location. It must be because there is something visually specific to the shoot I think to myself, as I prepare for a a challenging day, because no one in their right mind would want to do audio on a beach that is right underneath the take off paths of LAX airport which has 73 aircraft movements every hour would they? Talk to the line producer- why this beach? Answer- Oh bec…

hey everyone, i hope you all had a great 2012. i just recieved a 2012 economic census for sound recording studios and other sound recording industries form in-51207 in the mail for my company. this is the first i've ever had something like this and looking to some of you guys to see if you've encountered something similar? there's a list of breakdowns of income, a lot of studio based type of stuff, which i don't do any of. things like "Studio recording services for music clients", "Sound editing and design services for audio visual services" and "licensing of rights to use music". about the only thing on the list that i can relate my business to is "live audio …

In what by now qualifies as annual ritual, evaluate, re-evaluate, research, conversate, cogitate and take action to up my game. Thanks to all my pals for your invaluable experience, input, feedback and advice. This year, find myself satisfied with the bones of the operation (mixer, recorder, wireless), and it's been my plan not to change too much in that regard until the control surface dust settles into something I can invest in that meets my needs. In the meantime, I'm left with finesse and deepening layers of failure anticipation with an extra R1a here, and various small maintenance projects (the GVC has gone off to Germany for tightening) there. First …

Hi Everyone, So yes, we will again gather for food and fun during NAB. Details are pretty much the same as the last few years: Tuesday April 19, 2016 6:30pm - 9:30pm Buffet opens at 7pm We will meet at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years; less than a mile from the convention center. Key things for now: RSVP as soon as possible. RSVP no later than April 11. Create a separate RSVP for each person attending. Do not add a comment saying "will bring +1" or "bringing three friends." We need a separate entry for each person. RSVP (and find details) here: http://goo.…

The IRS is pumping out a new form W4 and it looks complicated AF for us freelancers who have multiple employers + 1099 income. No more "# of dependents". It looks like it was created with a single employer in mind. Looks like it wants your annual income to judge how much Federal Tax should be withheld. Anyone received any "legal" advice? https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/faqs-on-the-2020-form-w-4?fbclid=IwAR0uFZcsCL2CLo6plR6bHlBJEjZkie-cVYAiVE3LWoyyYTqb3HkYtFJUhQ0

Got an interesting call today. A show I did with 4 Sony SDX900 HD cameras is using the camera sound (naturally) and called me because they had tone on one of the cameras, and needed to put the "backup" audio into the mix. Since the cameras were rolling 23.97, the post sup, and DIT both signed off on doing 29.97 for the hard disk recording. Now they're complaining that it won't sync. Any thoughts on how to correct this without saying "You're using the wrong audio in the first place" ? Thanks, Tom

I will be starting a feature film shoot with the Sony F-55. The final delivery will be DCP, but the camera cannot record 24 FPS with the current firmware. It will only do 23.976. Since I'm in Europe, I have always been able in the last 30 years to ignore this silliness of fractional frame rates. But now I need to understand it's implications. The thing I don't understand is why some timecode generators and audio recorders have a separate 23.976 fps setting. We would have a TC generator on the camera, synced to the audio recorder (Sonosax R4) , which records the time of day. Both the audio files and camera files store the time of the first frame. There is no more con…

Anybody know the difference between "free run" and 24 hour run" on the 788t? I know "24 hour run" syncs to the clock for time of day, but normal "free run" can do that also. So, what is the difference and which should be used? Thanking you now

-from Facebook post -Nate Clapp Pictured is one of movie's first sound men checking the Vitaphone recording with a microscope while recording. Sort of a human playback head Back in the day (turn of the last century) there was no such thing as camera batteries or sound men. Men were men and cameras were hand cranked. As they had evolved from still cameras they were sort of still camera Gatling guns, capturing still frames as fast as you cared to crank. Somewhere past 14fps something magical happened and persistence of vision started to fuse the images so rather than a fast slide show it started to look like motion. So cameras were built to move one linear foot of…
