Hi all i met Franck by casualty, in NY when he was recording Dellaventura in 1997. The set was under my hotel ( pioneer hotel at this moment) I introduced myself, he invites me to stay with him, close to the nagra and drop me a Comtek. He was very kind, I was starting my sound mixer career at this moment. Now 25 years later, i would like to get in contact with him to say thanks! and share my 25 years experience. Thanks for the information, PM if you like!!!

After reading the Need Advice! thread I recall another story about a "snake". This goes back maybe 7 or 8 years, sorta' before the EZ availability of sharing photos online and the many avenues for equipment trading online- I believe this transaction took place via a equipment trading magazine. A boom operator in the west (not Cali) offered a boom snake for sale. I seem to recall she was leaving the business. We talked on the phone and discussed the snake, i.e. detachable box at boom op's end, mono mic with stereo headphone jack, and the length. We came to an agreement on price, kinda high because it was in "very good shape". I even paid for the shipping and the Pa…

Some of you guys might remember my previous post about bringing equipment to USA from Europe. I got ATA Carnet and other things sorted out and our first trip (to New York) a few weeks ago went very well. Thanks to all the advice I got also from this board. Except that the airport security in Helsinki took four batteries away from my checked-in pelican case.. Luckily I had three batteries with me as carry-on and a quick trip to B&H in New York helped to get through the shoot. (I also had enough time to buy a brand new Denecke TS-3 slate while waiting for the batteries..) Apparently no Li-ion batteries are allowed in checked-in baggage, no matter what…

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation has announced that it is dropping its planned bid to take full ownership of satellite broadcaster BSkyB. This has been huge news story over here in the UK for the last couple of weeks and I think it is starting to make the news in the states. Best John

Marc, I just read your Vol 22 Issue #1 column in the Coffey Files today...awesome read, thanks for the detailed info. I had a question though... I usually run an Ambient 202CT clock-it on my RED shoots... jam in the morning from the 702T and leave the box on the camera all day. I just use Free Run however, since I have no physical connection with the camera just the clock and a wireless reference track. I didn't see you actually use the term "free run" and was curious with your thoughts on that vs. rec run and TOD?

I'm on the road and using the production's sound rig. They are using Audio Ltd wireless systems, and they are in the block 31/32 range. (802-824mhz) Are these okay to use in the U.S.?

Dragon Lasers advertises that their green lasers will "dispel annoying fowl" by making them fly away. Anyone have any luck with either this or a similar product? http://www.dragonlasers.com/Bird-Control-with-Laser-Pointers.html

Ok so I was updating the spreadsheet I use as billing guidelines when working up quotes and realized it has been sometime since I have bid or done a sound job for a sports related show on the national level. Can somebody who is in the know send me a pm with an idea of the current range that is being accepted by networks and the dp's working for them. Nothing extravagant 1 or 2 cam interview and presser type stuff.

I've been fortunate enough to have a couple gigs that have taken me deep into the wilderness. And I've been frustrated that I'm inevitably tethered to a film crew, which makes wildlife recording a hit or miss proposition ... I'm tethered to the priorities of camera. So, I would love to set up a recording trip on my own ... take a guide into the bush for a couple weeks and see what I can get in terms of wildlife recordings. I would love to talk with someone who has recorded wildlife professionally and see what my options are for making this pay for itself. I'm imagining libraries as a possible source, but I also imagine there aren't many libraries that need …

I've been chatting with Bouke about adding a feature to the Make Transcriber Files app, he suggested we crowd source some additional input here: My Original Request: His Response: So anyone want to add any feedback to this? And since he's going to charge me for this – hopefully we can make it useful for more people... Thanks Peter

We are about to shoot a musical episode on a scripted series that doesn't normally have a lot of musical numbers. It is my understanding that the music will be prerecorded and we will have a playback op on set who will deal with earwigs, etc. I am expecting to use the same methods we normally do when there is a music performance in an episode, just on a larger scale. I will record a track of the music feed and music tc from the playback op, and be ready for recording live singing on set if necessary. If there is dialogue we will use the earwigs when necessary to get it clean. As the production mixer, are there any major differences I should prepare for? Any advice or warn…

In the discussion about Providing Wireless/Wired Communications, Joshua Anderson asks: "Anyone have a recommendation as to the practical difference between UHF band systems and 2.4GHz band ones?" I thought it would be a shame to lose a perfectly important Topic like this buried in another thread. Sound Mixers and Technicians come from varied backgrounds and disciplines. Some come from a science/engineering background, some come from a liberal arts foundation, some from film school, and even one or two from Medical School........ and a bunch from NoSchoolAtAll....... "Barbed Wire University", if you will, motivated PAs who attached themselves to the Soun…

The baseball won. My friend, local broadcaster Jon Bozeka, was calling a game today when the ball came straight at him. He backed up to avoid injury. The gear did not. $4k down the drain.

I was prepping for a job tomorrow. Luck for me it is a 1pm call time. I pulled my Venue from my cart to move it to another cart that will be running on AC. I went to plug it in with a wall wart that comes with Lectro receivers. After the fact I remember that they don't work. So I pulled out the wall wart that came with the venue. It fired up fine. But as it was turning on it read blocks 20-21! Ack!! This units serial # is 414 and it says blocks 21-22 right next to the serial #s. All of my block 22 receivers do not show up. They read as not being connected. Has this happen to anyone and what needs to be done to fix it? I'm hoping it is something that I can do. …

This is non-sound related, but thought I would share this. Thought maybe appropriate in "WTF?", but this is not very confusing, just cool. They do sound amazing, though, so maybe some sound relevance. Amazing idea, and creativity! http://vimeo.com/11139540
