I'm curious about the steps in post-production and re-recording regarding cleaning up of production tracks. I'm talking about a lot of little problems that infect our original recordings such as aircraft noise, rumble, RFI, overload distortion, camera noise, reverb, sibilance, ventilation, lighting and ballast noise, etc. With all the digital tools now available, are these problems currently fixed in dialog editing, the premix, or saved for the final mix? What is the usual order of processing (EQ, noise reduction, gating, compression, etc)? I'm sure there's no fast rule, but in general where do you start?

I am just curious about this and I don't care if I sound dumb - what is the danger? Have gennies actually been hit and exploded, killing people? Why would a generator "draw" lightning at all? Doesn't the lightning seek to release its voltage differential to the closest neutral AKA the earth? Or is a genny neutral? I did hear a verified account of a genny that was hit during a storm in FL. They didn't stop shooting for the storm and then the lights went out. No one died but I'd guess the genny was a goner. But in that case, lightning was striking all over the area, including many hits NOT on the genny. I'm confused.

So we are doing some equipment check and we ran into a problem. I connect the 702T and the HPX500 with the Lemo to BCN timecode cable. But the only way we are able to get them to sync is to put the 702T in 25FPS. The camera is set in NTSC 1080i 24FPS. Has anyone run into this problem or know of a way to fix this? They seem like they are in sync but we dont trust them.

Every Magnum Dolly (the old blue ones) I see on set makes these aweful relay clicks after every vertical movement, right on top of the dialogue. And they seem to be the cheapest in rental so they are everywhere. Frustrating.

I recorded the sound on this. BBC dubbing put the cat squalling at the end, I don't think it improves things.

I have a customer that e-mailed me from Germany about a service issue. Every time I reply to the e-mail it gets bounced back as an invalid e-mail address. I can tell it isn't spam because it is very specific. If you are in Germany, can you please PM me so I can give you the name of the person I am looking for? I'd hate for them to think I'm ignoring them. thanks!

This posted by Eric Goldstein on facebook. I always find these things fascinating, to listen to the elements recorded that get mixed into the final song we all know. Talk about the "sum of the parts" and the "whole" and all that, NONE of the parts seem to be even able to create the whole, but they do. Don and Crew and I all did the the Rolling Stones concert movie ("Let's Spend the Night Together") and when I stepped into the Record Plant Remote truck and listened to Mick's vocal track solo to the monitors, it was horrifying --- put into the whole mix for the concert --- brilliant! "Gimme Shelter" the whole is so much greater than the parts

Anyone else been really interested in watching a documentary subject then given up because the archive aspect ratio just jumped about without any correction? Fat normal fat normal fat! How the hell can people - our colleagues - working in this profession not give a damn about their craft? If you are working with picture (assistant editor ... editor ... producer ... director ...) how can you not notice the picture is wrong? Is it getting to the point that younger folks actually think that screwing up the archive aspect ratio is a visual 'language' way to tell us "this is old"? On the documentary I was hoping to get through one of the main interview subjects actually ran a …

What happened to the poll that was up awhile ago regarding the whole "who's on top" issue? I remember that it was tracking just about even when I last had a chance to look. Now I can't find the poll (and the Search routine here still needs some work --- it was no help locating the poll if it still exists). What we have discover in the meantime is that there are multiple ways to view this site and I'm confident everyone will find some routine that works for them, understanding that it will not necessarily be the same as it was on the old site. i would like to set as default, something that most people agree is the best way to have it set.

I run into this a lot but never when I'm the boom operator for another mixer. The situation comes up when I'm the one mixing, so I haven't gotten the opportunity to see how other mixers approach this. Specifically, I'm wondering if actors that are bunched together and speaking at the same time force any changes in the way you would record their dialogue. This would also fall into multiple speakers having the same dialogue spoken at the same time. For example: Bill, Bob, and John simultaneously say "I hate taxi cabs. Jinx!" Or something similar. I recently had a show where the 3 actresses were speaking into the camera with the same dialogue at the same time. I …
