Some of the videos these folks make have been mentioned in some thread or other, but I feel the website should be mentioned here. Awesome if you have some time to spend and like music. And of course a testament to production sound http://en.blogotheque.net/

I am having a hard time deciding between these 2. I think Zaxcom sounds better but it's not so easy to use in comparison to SD that I have used for years. Do you think sound devices will ever come out with DSP? I am curious to hear what you guys think.

Was flipping the channels and came across this on Discovery. You got to be kidding , a older guy and 20 something girl running around the jungle butt naked trying to survive for 21 days, guess the producer got bit by a snake, on the foot, pictures were so gross of his foot. So you got a camera and sound crew , where do they eat and sleep? Sound is good, believe the pacs are in the bags they are carrying and lavs hidden in the straps. Who thinks up these shows , and how do they get on , you know this crap is all staged, has to be. Batteries need to be charged. Lots of creative editing

I prefer not to hear that much hearsay, but for those guys who have actually transferred between unions through moving, was there more paperwork and expense involved than if you just went and joined another union? I see some guys have multiple union memberships say one in NYC and the other in LA. I know every place has its own stipulations depending on heirachy and such...but since IA is an international organization transferring itself should pretty straight forward I suspect. For example if you moved from a union that does not require 18 month residency to a place that does upon entering does a transfer still require the 18 month residency? Thanks folks.

I have a 633. When recording MP3 files, are the files "embedded with Timecode?"Client requested the following:We must have embedded time code MP3 audio files for our transcriptions. We do not want audible Timecode. I want a Timecode embedded MP3. I've always recorded poly-wave up until this point. Is the MP3 embedded with the Timecode? thanks.

Have suffered asthma long term but also bronchitis and occasional pneumonia during the last 10 years my MD is suggesting it may be fog generator exposure. I guess since 1982 to 2009 I have suffered hundreds of hours of sitting in fog filled stages. Good article on Wikipedia about fog machine oil etc. I am due to see a specialist soon. Any observations or experiences gratefully received Fondest mike

I recently did a shoot for a fictional episodic web series. The cast members were all women, and when it came time to get them miked up, I asked what had personally worked best for them in past shoots. They all said cleavage/bra mics. Lately I've had good results with hair miking, but none of them were interested in trying it out. As far as negating how to put on each mic, I just played it by year with each actress. As you may already know, I've been doing location sound here and there for a couple years, but this shoot was the first time I've set up "bra microphones" (forgive me if that's not the best term for it... the term "cleavage mics" seems worse somehow). At…

Hey All, I'm considering a gig in Pakistan. It's a couple months off, but I'm wondering if anyone here has been there (recently is better, but at all is good too...). I've read all the state dept travel warnings, and watch the news and read- so I'm pretty well aware of the potential danger. Just looking for anyone with real, on the ground experience there that they'd like to share. Thanks in advance, Tom

Hello, I wanted to know what a turnaround means in the right sense. If i am shooting through the night, wrap in the morning, and the next day is a day call, is this a turnaround? my best regards -vin

since the topic is locked (i'm puzzled by this), I am posting here... good idea, but not always workable imho... even a bullet wont travel down the slope of a paunch... add sweat to the equation and it gets stickier... -vin

In what by now qualifies as annual ritual, evaluate, re-evaluate, research, conversate, cogitate and take action to up my game. Thanks to all my pals for your invaluable experience, input, feedback and advice. This year, find myself satisfied with the bones of the operation (mixer, recorder, wireless), and it's been my plan not to change too much in that regard until the control surface dust settles into something I can invest in that meets my needs. In the meantime, I'm left with finesse and deepening layers of failure anticipation with an extra R1a here, and various small maintenance projects (the GVC has gone off to Germany for tightening) there. First …

This is Charlie, aka The Moose. He is a bog standard tabby but he is still a good looking cat in my opinion! Unfortunately we had to leave him back in New Zealand when my Mrs and I decided to shift back to London, he is now happily living with a friend on Aucklands North Shore. I miss him! [img alt=photo width=640 height=426] What you got?!

Here's a recent one. TV commercial, VOs with an actor were done at a hotel room after wrap. Got an email from the agency via producer a few days later: "The speech recordings from the hotel room are mono, not stereo! How can this be?" Do you have some funny agency folk stories to share? EDIT: changed the thread name to more accurately reflect the great contents of this thread!

Hey Guys, On a shoot yesterday, when our scheduled lunch time hit "Grace" was called to do one more shot before breaking. At the end of the day, as typically happens with small budget shoots, chaos started to happen and communication fell apart. Just before the scheduled wrap time, the line producer came over to me and asked me what time I needed to be out and what calling "Grace" meant. She wanted to make sure that she did not have to pay any overtime..... Comments? pshap (You all rock... hard... Audio Rules on set....)

Hi Guys Can anyone please give any advice regarding the concealment of Lavalier mics. I am about to undertake a series where the mics will be concealed under clothing. The presenter's style is to wear a shirt, without tie, top two buttons undone and a wearing an open suit type jacket. The shoot will be heavily reliant on radio mics and shot mainly outdoors with two other contributers involved. I have been doing some tests with concealing mics with the above attire in mind, but I am having no success to say the least.... clothing noise and rustle being a real problem irrelevant of where I place the mics and what type of mount and wind covers I use. The mics in my k…

After checking with Stephan Ukas-Bradley, the US Arri product manager and then talking to Dave Lezynski, a SF DIT who had called Ambient, I found out that the Alexa Timecode system is licensed from Ambient and works like the one in Lockit syncboxes and the Ambient slates. It can be tuned by the Ambient Master Controller to improve the accuracy to beter than 1 ppm and can be jamed just like the slates or Lockits. This is the first camera to have an internal clock designed to be jammed and not require a syncbox providing EXT TC to the camera. The camera holds code when turned off, as long as a power supply is connected and will hold code for at least 15 minutes when powe…

Did a search, but found no discussions on the topic of sound thirds. Seems like every mixer has different things they expect and need. Interested in how others manage and think about the position. What do you want/expect? From my perspective, which is largely wanting to be a better, happier department head: I most enjoy working with 3rds who don't want or need to be micromanaged. If I'm micromanaging, something's wrong. Despite what I need or expect, I look for strengths and areas of interest in which to direct their time & attention. If you're happy & fulfilled, I'm happier & more fulfilled. While there are no stupid questions, I find that new team membe…

I'm curious to know when/why people prefer cabled poles vs uncabled. I've seen some posts here say for ENG they like cabled and narrative work they prefer uncabled. To me a coiled cabled pole is always easier to deal with (out of sight, out of mind perhaps?) Ktek have designed great bases to plug right into while other companies have the flow through base options for cabling as well. However to me it seems like a constant headache having all the extra cable (from an uncabled pole and from a flow through straight cabled pole) to deal with. I have my boom op plugged into a sound devices MM1 and with that I feel less cable the better as they plug a 2' coiled cable from …

Just recently started my Staff Me Up profile, and was wondering if anybody on here might mind voicing their thoughts on it? As someone who's trying to establish themselves in this business and therefore needs to find work, it'd be great to hear the good the bad, and everything in between. Is it a good place to find work, or at the very least a good alternative to Craigslist? Interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

Tom, It now says on the website that the Tascam DR-10's are not available in the US. Why? I assume that means Canada as well. I really want a couple. How can I get my hands on some?

Question, How often do you use EQ while recording dialog on location? If you do, is it to enhance the dialog or more to cut out some unwanted frequency. Using a low cut filter doesn't count as most will use it to cut the low rumble. Thx

I'll be working on a big car commercial next week (they usually do em without production sound here...). There will be no dialogue, only ambience and engine sounds to be recorded. So I'm supposed to plant mics into the cars and record the while the car driving. Of course there will be a lot done in sound design but I'd like to give them some good sounding recordings anyway. Since I haven't recorded engine sounds very often maybe some of you who have (SFX folks?) can give me some advice concerning good mic placement, what kind of mics you'd use etc. Thanks in advance Chris
