Any tips for hiding a lav transmitter on a woman in a short evening dress? Here are some examples of the kind of dresses I'm talking about: http://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1260&bih=840&oq=short++evening+dress&q=short evening dress If her back is not going to face the camera then I could use a pouch to secure it to her lower back under her dress. If the dress was long enough I could put the lav lower on her leg. And if the bottom poufed out enough I could take advantage of that to hide on the upper leg. But what to do if the whole body is going to be on camera and the dress is relativ…

Hey all, My Honda Odyssey has had a lot of issues lately and is getting into higher miles so I'm starting to look at other car options. I got the mini van before I got into sound and was still in camera and g&e so the big van let me take a lot more stuff than I usually roll with nowadays. I'm hoping to go to something smaller and more enjoyable to drive like a VW Golf Sportwagen or Subaru Outback, either of which would be a nice driver and have a good bit of cargo, enough to fit my EuroCart even. Curious what other people drive. Do you have Transit vans or similar? If so is that basically your daily driver? Feel free to post pics of loaded gear!

Here would be a good place to discuss the importance of patents, innovation, competition and the law. For the most part we are unaware of these issues in our world of sound recording but occasionally there is the need for discussion. Also, there are those like myself that really enjoy discussions of these things historically and how some of the larger cases have affected some of the technology and tools we use (for example the legendary Sony Betamax vs. VHS issue). -moved from Sonosax SX-R4+ topic thread: dolo72 has said: Also Aaton cantars have always used a similar system and they have been around longer than neverclip. I thought at first when I saw this that Gabriela was doing that thing we all said we should not do --- riding in the trunk of a moving car. I looked more closely and I think the car may actually be being towed but she is still in the trunk. http://cinemasound.ning.com/photo/car-scene?context=latest - JW

It looks like the FCC will be auctioning off the bandwidth above 600mhz after 2016. Sennheiser has posted more information and a petition to provide compensation from the wireless and broadband companies that will end up with the spectrum for the replacement of radio mics in those affected blocks. Let's protect what bandwidth we still have. If you don't already have it, GET YOUR FCC LP LICENSE EVERYONE!!!! http://en-us.sennheiser.com/spectrum#sthash.30fN22ZR.dpbs

What exactly is it that makes a lavalier mic have resistance to clothing rustle when hidden under a shirt? The tram tr50 is reputed to have low rustle, but that is surprising to me given that larger membranes usually cause more handling noise, at least in studio mics. I wonder if it's simple weight. I'm wondering if somehow adding weight to my Rode Lavaliers would reduce clothing rustle when suspended with tape between an actor's pecs. I'm thinking of experimenting with just putting some blue-tak around it to add weight and possibly dampen vibrations.

I've been a boom operator for only a couple of years, and I aim to continue doing this for some time. However, I am concerned about potential future back problems. I obviously stretch before shoots, excercise proper posture (no leaning) and have an extensive collection of muscle-soothing ointments. I was wondering if anyone could suggest techniques and equipment for taking the strain of operating off your mucles, as well as any excercises that may help to improve your necessary "booming" muscles. Cheers.

What I hope to see here is discussion and images regarding our work vehicles, real and imagined, present day or historical. I will have to recuse myself from this topic since sadly I do not have ANY vehicle appropriate to the task of transporting me and the tools of the trade. I have had a number of great work vehicles in the past, but now, nothing.

Hi all! So I'm just fishing right now as I've settled into a job that is using the EX3. I've already recorded once with the EX3 for this show for a doc series I started back in November in Mongolia and have just returned from a 6 week stint in Vietnam, New Zealand and Fiji for the same show. This is the thing. I received confirmation a week before leaving on the latest leg that the cross-jamming I was doing with my modded SB2A (Denecke) running my 744T at 29.97 NDF 24/48 to the SB2A running at 23.98 that everything synced up perfectly. Whilst in the field, surviving Nam, in New Zealand, I find out that there is a sync issue where there is a drift from the camera …

For the first time in 23 years I have a client that is refusing to pay me the balance on an outstanding invoice. With out going into too many details I did a job for a first time client back in March. I receive half payment about 45 days later in April with a letter stating that everything turned out great and they were have some money issues. I was annoyed but appreciated their gesture of half payment and I figured that the rest would come soon. Then I had no additional contact with them until May when I email them regarding the balance and after two emails over two weeks they responded that they would send some additional money soon. A few weeks later they sent a check…

Out of curiosity. For myself, two items stick out. 1. Lectro Venue system - Very nice rack system that gives me great performance with power requirements well within my current battery system. 2. Powerx AA rechargeable batteries - Work great in my Lectro transmitters and love the fact that at the end of the day I'm not shoveling in handfulls of dead batteries to the trash or recycling.

Does anyone have a sample production contract they are willing to share? I guess it is time to finally start using one (after the email I got from a producer this morning) after submitting an invoice for my 17 hour day yesterday: "I don't do mileage. I pay for gas, I thought I explained that. And I didn't know you were charging for travel time. I have never paid an hourly rate for any sound person traveling from little rock. So we need to figure something out." I've been in this business for about 25 years and I think this is only the second client that has balked at mileage or travel time (first was when I worked on Unsolved Mysteries as a PA in the 80's when t…

We have just started a new movie and i thought i would share some of the issues we have encountered and how we dealt with them. This movie is shooting 35mm handheld on 2 cameras. The style is that both cameras will be on wide lenses close to the actors. Because the movie is 90% handheld a decision was made by the DP to use Arri LT (lightweight) cameras which are 4db noisier than an Arri ST (studio) camera. Creatively the DP has also chosen Fuji stock, which is always noisier than Kodak, due to the perforations sounding 'pickier'. The movie is not a huge budget so the Producer has decided (and this is very common in the UK) to shoot 3 perf, which means a 25% reductio…

Many of us do a lot of travel on airplanes and we now have another set of new regulations to make flying an even more unbearable event. Here are the new directives from the TSA on new "In Flight" rules: IN FLIGHT 1. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed: 1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior…

I'm seeing all the latest pro wireless mic offerings advertised in the header here on jw, and pondering what the jw community, including manufacturers, retailers, and end users think about wireless pricing relative to a few developments in the production world: a) the fact that video camera pricing have dropped and keep dropping dramatically while offering buyers astounding image quality improvements and new features the impact item (a) above has had on production budgets, particularly the pressures it has placed on sound professionals to offer more gear and labor for lower and lower prices. c) Other items I haven't thought of but I'm sure the jw community ha…

Any advice on recording in a moving car, or possibly van (mics, setup, etc)? It will be an improvised conversation between the front seat passengers. Part of it may take place on a gravel road. Hoping to avoid the need for any ADR. Thanks, Adam

Hi Guys . I hope this is the right section to post this question ! I have a job coming up where i'm required to do playback for a music video and I need to add timecode to a music track the director sent me. I believe its standard to have time code on one channel and the music track on the other but I was wondering how I would do this in either Pro Tools or Logic ? Also I know In certain cases I'll want to speed the audio up so they can get that slow motion effect I was told that if they are shooting at 24/23.98fps, the 36fps track needs to be sped up to 148.81%, and the 48fps at 200.80%. What is the easiest and most accurate way to do this ? Any help wou…

Happy Holidays all, A transpo question.. What type of vehicle do you haul your gear around in? Is is a trailer? If so, do you find it harder to park your gear? Or do you use a van of some type which raises you cost, but makes it easier to park. Starting to stretch the limits of my trusty Toyota RAV 4 and looking to upgrade transpo! Have a safe Holiday.. It's a long and complicated story (not really a sad one), but I am now the owner of both a 633 and a MAXX. I do mostly documentary work and am trying to decide which is my main recorder and which is my backup. I am a long time Sound Devices user so there is/was a much steeper learning curve for the MAXX but there are many things that I like about it (size, weight, design, to name a few). My main problem with the MAXX is that I am uncomfortable recording to only a CF card. For years, I used my 744T, I left the CF card with production if I had to, and went home and downloaded from the hard drive so that I had my own record of the day's sound. I'd like to hear if this is…

A few years ago, took to creating a sample sound report to send to editorial during pre-production, like this: First and best, sending out a draft sound report with notes continues the already-open flow of information and communication, with a small dose of humor. The timing is just after we've agreed on specs, so post (and UPM) can see the sound report in draft, before I send it to the printer. I'm really consistent with my marks. Stars for sync/transfer, asterisks for sound editorial notes, circles for tone. Seems like productions don't often need time code notes from me any more. I like that. This was one of the last shows I used the DAT for backup, hence …

I have heard recently that somebody wasn't terribly impressed with what they found on me on IMDB. To be honest, the only things on there for me are when someone else listed the crew of a project I was on. I do, on request, have a one page PDF that I send out with what I feel is a good representation of the scope of work I do. Between work and the rest of my life, I kind of don't have time for constant IMDB updates. Should I make time?

Worked on a 5D/7D shoot, Picture and audio sunk up perfectly but they would not hold sync after 8-9 minutes into the shots. Was told there was about a 1 sec difference between the audio & picture at the drift point. Never had that issue before on other 5D shoots. Opinions on cause of drift? Eric
