Does anyone have any experience with any auto mixers or any suggestions? Just needed to be able to record a round table type meeting for transcription no picture involved. Thanks, Whit

So, first day using my new 7" IKAN VX7 monitor, plugged in a 100ft. lead from village to my SDI port, first thing that happens is my screen flashes on/off every 4 seconds or so, then occasionally goes to green and then to a very screwed up picture that reminded me of my old NES when the games didn't seat correctly in the machine. After trying different cables and basic trouble shooting options trying to use the dipswitches (one of which was to be on for using lengths over 75ft.), the solution was to use a 25ft. cable to get a solid working picture. This however didn't seem to fix the rather loose connection that seemed to look "NES" again if the cable got bumped the sli…

So I recently sold my old two channel 722 and my DV Promix (shameful look) and I am making the move into the professional world. I am going to get a a pretty hefty tax return this year and I am debating between two routes for my new recording rig. I currently have an MKH-50 and a few good wireless channels, with Cos-11s. I am debating between moving to a cart rig or the Zaxcom Nomad. I already own a new MBP, and Pro-Tools 9 with a Digi 003. So boom recorder and a mixer makes me a great timecode recorder, but I like the Zaxcom Nomad argh please help me decide! Rig #1 $4,700 Yamaha 01v96i w/ Meon life and BoomRecorderPro and Pro-Tools and an SKB 10x6 Rotorack …

Just updated the firmware in my Erxtcd's but when i try to update the Qrx with the QOPT-139.BIN the numbers get out of sync and I can never complete the update. I use a Trx900LT with version 7.30 and tried multiple times, must be a setting on the Qrx. Anybody has that problem ?

I'm guessing the Sennheiser MZW61 is a good solution as it is Senn's official foammie for the 60. But how do poeple find it? Are there any better options available? Thanks

I fancy a new pair of cans, I have Beyer DT100, DT150 and DT770, Sennheiser HD25, and Sony 7506's I like the Beyers, but find them a bit heavy, hate the Sennheisers for their total lack of isolation and comfort, and tolerate the Sonys because they're comfortable, despite the sibilance. So, what do other people use and like?

I have an issue with the QRX100 running t/c. From camera into QRX is solid; From QRX to TRX900 is solid; TRX900 into 788 is solid, but then the 788 starts running slower within a few minutes. I've tried feeding the 788 from an ERXtcd and get the same problem. In the jam menu on the 788 I can see the RX and TX t/c, and the TX always ends up a second or two behind. I have tried with a second 788, same problem. I've also tried with a lockit box and that's absolutely fine. What's confusing is that timecode is correct all the way through the chain but something is forcing the 788's TX timecode to slow. This only happens if the 788 is hardwired to either the TRX900 or the E…

I'd like to give props to Howie at Zaxcom for responding to a firmware request the same day. I couldn't possibly have been given faster service / attention. I had two request, one to make remote gain changes from the QRX a less granular 1dB step instead of the older 2dB step and if possible, to get feedback status of the TX's actual gain value. Both requests done and done. Thank you Howie. Tom

Has anyone A-B'd the Beyer DT1350 vs Senn HD25ii vs Sony 7506 headphones for the purposes of our work particularly voice recording. What are your opinions? I'm wondering how the DT1350's stack up against our common favorites. I'm having to wait a week or so to do my own test while the NZ Beyer agent gets some in for me to try. Cheers, Malcolm

Hi All, I'm running a Pro-Tools 9 system for a shoot in addition to my normal 788 recording system to satisfy a request from post... I'm receiving smpte LTC from an external source into my 788. Going from there into the LTC input on a MOTU 828 mk3 interface and then firewire into PT9. My problem is that PT9 can not use smpte LTC (although the program clearly can see the timecode - one of those ways Pro Tools tells you you should have bought Pro Tools HD). The post people are content with me recording the smpte onto an additional audio track, but I would like to be able to convert it to MTC anyway. Anyone know of any inexpensive hardware that can do this? I've b…

I've been working for a couple different news magazine shows and am interested in getting timecode from the camera to my SD552 to accommodate the rec-run environment. I want to use a lectro 211 and it's matching (um200 i think) to send TC from a Panasonic HDX 900 and/or a Sony 900 (the camera op I work with has both). Has anyone used this combo? If so, i'll need a BNC to lectro 5 pin to get the TC out of the camera. A search on the internet doesn't seem to come up with anything. Any advise?

Hello fellow Sound Pros I'm looking for feedback on an idea I have. I thinking of getting a NEVE portico 5015 onto set because Im not happy with my SD 788T pre amps. I find the noise floor too high especially when doing quite ATMOS tracks in the AFRICAN bush. http://rupertneve.com/products/portico-5015/ The unit can run on 15 VDC, I can get a converter built to run from my BDS. It also has good RF rejection because of the transformer based electronics. But is it really a good idea for dialogue? I'm trying to get hold of a NEVE channel strip here in Cape Town but it's proven to be a difficult exercise . Is there too much coloration in the p…

I am pretty new to Sound Devices recorders so my benchmark has been stuff i have heard while editing and cleaning DX. I purchased the recorder second hand from a guy here in LA who stated the recorder was a backup and hardly used. The hiss has been driving me nuts. i am unsure if this is normal among SD recorders. I wanted to survey JW members before sending her off to the mothership. how clean are your 744t pres? I added two sample files. The pre settings are as named 50%-36.wav 75%-50.wav

Okay, believe me I do realize this is probably a moot point, but since I dont have much experience in this field I wanted to consult those that did before I make this swap. I just purchased a Rycote WindShield Kit 4 from B&H for my Sennheiser MKH-416 and as Im sure you all know it comes with the standard Grey WindJammer (Dead Cat, etc). Now, where I have intentions of shooting will mostly be in dimly lit areas, large warehouses (for which I might not even use the 416), or outdoors at night, around working artists who probably wont appreciate any distractions. So I was thinking that a black WindJammer might be just that little bit less distracting and hopefully h…

Coffey Sound tells that there is no prevision of new Nomad units and that they are still in backorder. How long have you waited? For how long I should expect to wait?

Anybody see anything wrong with this scenario? ( other than range ) Use Jumpstart LTC to jam the Denecke slate, then transmit from the slate time code back to the cart. Slate becomes the master time code source. Either jam camera with Jumpstart at the same time the Denecke gets jammed, or put a receiver on camera with the transmitted time code for the slate, or run it like its a film camera and not bother. 2nd slate gets a receiver. I've tried it out and boom recorder and the flash memory back up are happy . Thought of fishing voltage off the slate, to power the TX, but haven't looked into it yet. Also thought about having the TX only power up when the stick…

Yay or nay? I've been using Fostex for the last 3 years firstly the 204 and then moved up to the 606, but, and I think it might just be my machine, but I'm starting to get sick of the quirks that pop up with my machine, the relative unreliability of the hard drive, the pickups being hotter than I would like, and having to burn off or transfer data at the end of the day when everyone goes off to drink beer (cant really mirror onto a dvd while operating over the shoulder, and i dont know if its been fixed yet, but apparently transferring to USB adds noise to the files somehow?). Also, I like renaming and naming files on the go and the buttons on the front panel are jus…

I am finally getting around to replacing most of my UM400a's with SMV's and was wondering what folks out there are using to attach them to talent. I have rented them plenty of times. They usually come with the leather pouches which protect, but are bulky. Seems counter intuitive for most applications especially for something that was designed to be small and easy to hide on talent. At the moment I am thinking wire upward facing belt clips for quick attachment and neo straps when they need to be hidden under shirt or pant leg. What has worked best for you in the variety of environments with the multitude of challenges we face.

I am in need of a backup NP-1 charger. I hate like hell to buy an expensive charger that is mostly going to sit in case or on shelf and collect dust. I noticed that Varizoom is now making inexpensive NP-1 chargers. www.varizoom.com I called them and asked if they were compatible with IDX LIONs and they confirmed that they were compatible. Anybody here try them? Or am i the group guinea pig? john.

I've been in the slow process of a large cart project. I currently work out of a bag (SD 442 / Lectros) and cart. I'm now rethinking .... staying in bag land, looking at the Nomad or waiting to see if Sound Devices is coming out with something new. See pics of the project... any thoughts Mike
