Hey all, I have a doc gig coming up where we'll be tracking sperm whales through the Caribbean (tough, I know). I should have some down time and thought this would be an awesome opportunity to record some whale songs. The last time I quoted to rent a proper hydrophone in NYC I remember it being pretty pricey, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience doing it the DIY approach. SM57 in a condom or something like that. If you have specific insight as to recording whales that would be awesome too. As of now I am thinking about bringing an old beater boom pole to hold over the side of the boat and sacrifice to the salt water gods. Thanks, Jesse www.jfasound.com

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to increase the range of a TRX900 as a stereo Camera hop. Even after attaching a sharkfin to the TRX900, I find I still don't quite get anywhere near the range of a lectro UM400/UCR411A combo, especially through buildings and cars etc. Is there an inexpensive RF amp I can use to incorporate this? I know Micplexer is about to be available. However, I only need to boost my cam hop transmitter, I don't need the RF distro side of it. Any suggestions?

MixPre-D Introduced at NAB 2011 Sound Devices is setting a new standard for compact, high-performance portable audio mixers with the introduction of its newest MixPre-D at NAB. The MixPre-D is designed for any production application where capturing great sound is important, but size and weight are a concern. The introduction of MixPre-D continues Sound Devices’ heritage of studio-quality portable mixers which began with the original MixPre. At the heart of the new MixPre-D are two studio-grade mic/line switchable inputs with limiters, high-pass filters and selectable phantom power. The MixPre-D offers numerous analog output options including mic/line switchable ba…

Hello, Dimmer operator wanting to use his old computer speakers with my Comtek. They have a "stereo" jack, but improper resistance keeps Comtek from powering up for more than a moment. Looking for an inexpensive solution which does not require a custom 1/8" F-M cable with resistor. Anyone familiar with any cheap little speakers which will work? Thanks, Robert

I've got a strange issue with my 900LT in that it's producing a consistent noise that sounds reminiscent of dropped least significant bits on the A to D. I've tried switching freqs and it's the same across the spectrum. Any thoughts? I'm recording to a 744T but the problem only shows up once the transmitter is turned on, even when there's no mic plugged in. Plugging in the mic doesn't seem to make a difference in the noise. The receiver on its own is perfectly quiet. It's still usable but not as pristine as I'm used to. Any ideas welcome.

So I'm using my new CL Wifi today on a shoot for Hasbro Toys. I have some sync sound to record later, but most of my work today will be playback of a 30 sec track. I was hoping to spend the day sitting at craft services, far, far away from the lighting crew. Sadly, I have to sit at my cart, and move my entire arm to hit the play button. A serious letdown. Uhhhhh.... My arm....

Howdy Folks, Does anyone out there know of a highly qualified technician here in the USA who could mod the Ambient Clockit Slates to deal with 23.976 frame rates? I'd rather not ship it to Ambient in Germany if I don't have to. Gotham and Able Cine here in NYC aren't able to deal with it. I know it's a stretch, but I'd thought I'd ask the posse. Cheers, Sean O'Neil Brooklyn NY

I'm not sure what is the best "battery" setting to use with my 552. All may batteries are Nickel Metal Hydrid, but Sound Devices does not offer that as a menu option. They offer only: 12V Ni Cad 12V Ni Cad Wide 12V Lead Acid Full Range DC Input 14V Litthium Ion Any suggestions? Thanks, Tom

I posted this on the DEVA group, but it sounds like a quirky camera thing so maybe somebody else ran into it. So I am having some MAJOR TC drifting. Has anyone ever had that caused by firmware? Is that even possible? I upgraded to 7.37 at the start of this job. I don't use the Fusion every day, but I did use it the last two days and that's when I noticed the drift. I would say within 15 minutes I was noticing that I was maybe 2 seconds behind the cameras. I wasn't powering down the Fusion at all. The cameras were showing a TC issue long before they did any battery swaps. Not scientific, but I set the Fusion by my phone about 24 hours ago and it's now off about …

Just found out late today that production may want me to source a parabolic mike in the Boston area for this Friday and Saturday. Non-pro soccer game. Shooting in Hartford, CT. Part of an on-going shoot. Any rental houses or soundies have one for rent? I'll call Turner Audio in the morning, found a reference to Andy Turret having one a few years back. Any other ideas? Thanks! Dave Wendlinger San Francisco, CA

Wanted to get some opinions from the field about the Smart Noise Reduction feature on the 411a. From my experience, there is a noticable difference between the off and normal settings. Between normal and Full, its very slight, but has anyone experience "transparency" for low level room noise? Thanks!

Hi Folks, Very quick question with a possibly lengthy (not there yet) pre-amble. I was called today and told that the camera on a shoot this week would be far enough away from the FOH console that we'd need a wireless hop for audio. No biggie. While not well equipped for wireless by any stretch of the imagination, I have two EW G3 plug-ons that I can attach to my mixer and send two channels of wireless to the camera for guide tracks. As usual, before something like this, I'll usually check and set-up my equipment in part because who knows what was changed last time and I like to double check to make sure I can just show up and go. Or at least be as close t…

I'm a fan of the CS-3e and own three of them. On a recent shoot (3 cam doc-style) one of the three suddenly had major hum any time it went near a flourescent fixture. Other two no problem and I switched to a MKH-60. I've had all 3 mics for years w no issues and one other has earlier SN than this one, so it didn't seem like an outdated RF mod could be it. Anyway, took it to Plus 24 and when Walter got back to me he said he fixed it (no charge, btw) by tightening the screws on the side of the mic which were a bit loose. So this is a good thing to know that these screws ground the mic and this problem can be easily fixed if you have it. Also, he reglued a screen which came o…

I've seen a few issues on the forum concerning certain models that can be used together and some that seem to be avoided (sometimes with the aid of usual ''Murphy's law wireless magic'') and since I could have an opportunity to mix brands now, here's the plan (please feel free to comment) : I own two Zaxcom systems now, block 21 (TRX900AA + RX900) Planning to add a QRX100 system as camera hop, block 24 (might use a Micplexer eventually, hence the 3 blocks difference). Now the Lectro side; if I add two UCR411A receivers, block 22 in my bag (plus two SMQVs)(and possibly a UH400A), according to your experience, am I prone to problems with RF spill from either brand …

let me preface this by saying its a cool idea in theory but i know its not practical to do... http://airphonesapp.com/ I like the idea of a decent sounding transmission to monitor. i might use it for myself to check mics as i place them but it would be neat for producers/ director to ditch comteks and monitor via wifi. maybe in 5 years... the one i will also play around with is http://www.itouchmidi.com/?q=node/32 got this up and running with the Metric Halo software. I can monitor with an ifb and mute or solo channels remotely and its pretty cool seeing the faders move on screen from 50' away( as far as i tested it). Should work with rme and motu software…

Not a boatload of info, but more then we have had publicly available so far. http://www.zaxcom.com/micplexer.htm It looks like it needs to be ordered to match both your transmitter's freq, and your receiver's freq's. I do have a few questions: will it work with Lectro receivers, and if you have receivers on multiple blocks (as most people who do any traveling do), do you need more then one of these things. It seems that the answer is yes to that last question. Oh yeah, uh like, is it expensive? regardless, it seems like a very needed product for some people (like myself).

I have a fellow freelance sound colleague in my area that came up with a really cool device I sure wish I had thought of. Next best thing... I bought four of 'em... What is it? Well, as the name suggests, uh, its a battery clip, much like an ammo clip, that holds either 9 volts or AA's. At the price of these units their usefulness becomes rather obvious, if for no other reason than keeping people out of your battery stash on set. It doesn't burst open all over the ground when dropped, like the cardboard box batteries are supplied in. Finally, if you need to keep batteries warm on your body, this is a perfect solution. Not to endorse a particular vendor, but ther…

After recording for the past 4 days on my 744t, I just transferred all the files to a drive. After I pulled the FW cable from the computer and tried to power it down for the night, I got the screen that says powering down, closing media, however, it hadn't shut down. After I pulled the battery, restarted it, and tried to power it down again, the same thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what should I do? Before someone gets on my back about contacting the manufacturer, it's Friday night at 12:20 AM in San Juan, Puerto Rico and I could really use a cold beer right about now. Thanks in advance for your collective help. Marc
