I am building a small ( as in first ) cart and looking at the different approach that you guys are taking in building your RF distro system. Since i have to remain ready for bag based work and will share equipment in between the to type of jobs, here is a breakdown of my equipment. 5 Lectrosonics UCR411A, mounted in a Portabrace RM multi deluxe with DC distro ( ending with an XLR4 for power thru cart distro or NP1 cup ). Sound Devices 788T with CL8 ( one day it will be a CL9 ). Comtek M216opt7 ( for boom op ). Lectrosonics LMa TX ( for Camera hop mono ). Here is my idea thus far: An SKB 12 rack space containing Receivers and recorder. One R…

Gentlemen.. If anybody knows about this I dare say they will reside here. My friend has a couple of AKG 451's, I've always quite liked to use these (in a live environment) but now they develop noise after about,.. well anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes and therefore are now rendered redundant. Do we have any experience of this issue ? It would be nice to be able to restore them to their former glory and put them back to work.. All the best

Hi , Firstly thanks to David Waelder for the review of this system in the 695 quarterly . I have been looking at this system for a while now with the view of buying one , however at present i run a lectro sm/denecke ps-1 and i was surprised to read that the lectro system that David compared with the zax system seemed to be as good . Surprised only because everything i had read lent towards the zax being the best . Anyway , because i run a fusion the zax system has advantages but i am concerned about the ifb . Is the 1 watt antenna amp a zax product or aftermarket , what is it? , how much? and how much power does it draw . Also is the trx700 the same au…

I'm looking to replace the bottom base connector on my K-Tek Avalon boom pole. I was wondering if this is just a Switchcraft B3M connector, or is it some modified version of it? The part was quoted at almost $100, whereas the B3M connector is $15 at any online electronics part store. Could I save the cash? Thanks!

Which ones are you guys using ? How well do they work ? Do you only use them for special circumstances such as music or EFx recording ? Ambiences, room tones in Stereo ? Better to go with one bodied mic or two seperate units ? I don't have a lot of experience doing stereo recordings for TV / Film purposes but i once set up a pair of stereo matched NT-5's to pick up the laughter during a scene at a comedy club. Post was pleasantly surprised to hear i had gone the extra mile to get a good stereo image. It sounded great to me. Really gave the crowd a sense of space. And you could hear one womans totaly silly laugh linger on just a little longer then everyone else's, in…

Hey Gang, I've been looking at Jeff's gallery of carts, looking for some inspiration for the following issue: what is the best cart set-up for using an 01v96? I got my hands on a lightly used one - have started to wrap my head around the internal routing structure of the mixer - and was only now aware of how deep the mixer is! If I wanted to go the SKB route - I'd HAVE to get the shockmount version - just to fit it inside! I know Rastorder is an option - but more $ than I was hoping to pay for a cart! I'm starting to look at the magliner carts. Maybe an SKB on a magliner? Thoughts? Ideas? I don't want the cart to end up so huge I'm gonna regret getting…

I have a Powersonics charger for one of my 33 Amp Pelican case batteries. The charger takes a 2AG .60 inch or 15mm size fuse (picture below). Even Pacific Radio couldn't help me. Any one have an easy source of where to buy these in Los Angeles? Thanks in advance. RL

Wondering if anyone has any info, or knows where to find info about portable antenna systems. More specifically, the systems used by military personnel. The kind usually poking out the top of backpacks that soldiers use for communications. I'm looking to use that kind of antenna system integrated with a Lectro Octopak for a mobile wireless setup. Thanks

I came across a website - RBR - which provides a lot of good info on rechargable AA batteries and chargers. It features a AA NiMH comparison chart.

hi there, if you can share some of your expertise i would greatly appreciate it. i'm a sound editor currently building a recording kit. for the sake of having a less bulkier Rycote i'm entertaining the idea of buying a mono Rycote and piggybacking one mic on top of the other to have am M/S setup (mkh 30/40). i've seen this done by sound mixers when they've posted pics on their blogs or other. my first question is there going to be a problem when higher winds are involved? has anyone done this and liked the result or found that the top mic became more sensitive to wind coming through the zeppelin? i can see myself recording here in Montreal during a winter snow st…

hey guys, thought i'd flag this one up to see if anyone else has a similar problem. when i bought my 552 in november, i also bought 2 brand-new Hawk-Woods NP65 Li-Ion batteries. one of them works great out of the box but the other just fails to power anything, and triggers a red flashing light (never a good sign) on the adaptor (a Hawk-Woods NPB-SQN4S). the offending battery has been back to my Sales place a few times and subsequently back on to Hawk-Woods who have tested the battery inside out and report no fault. after a few different approaches from Hawk-Woods, they threw their hands up in defeat and sent me a replacement. oddly enough, this doesnt work EITH…

#1) I turned on my 744 yesterday and the time code read 25:xx:xx:xx (that's 25 hours). Using it as a master I plugged it into my DV824 and the 824 was displaying 25 hrs as well. It was in free run and when I attempted to adjust TC and increment it to 26 hours it would not go outside the normal 00hrs-23hrs parameters. Mind you this was yesterday, many hours (EST) before the time change (spring forward). #2) I have a CF card (SanDisk, from a local Pro Audio dealer) plugged in and when it became full I continued to record for a couple of weeks. Yesterday, intending to wipe the card, I checked the contents and all of the files were 6kB in length, with what appear…

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone is using a boom pole at 17' and longer with an internally coiled cable. I have a K-tek 12'6" coiled internally, and seem to be fine swinging it around without any cable slap. My biggest worry is the cable slap since its a longer pole. Any thoughts or suggestions? - Jeffery

He guys, i have a VDB boom and would like to get some info on the loon boom coiled cable. Mostly i would like to know a few things.1- Is the cable heavy? Compared to the one from VDB, would anyone know if there is a difference?2- Can someone measure the diameter of the Loon cable to see if it would fit inside my VDB?3- How is the cable reacting to the cold? My original VDB cable is the shinny plastic kind and gets incredibly stiff, near unusable when really cold.4- Can anyone tell me what the inside conductors look like? Are they like mic cables or, like my VDB, weird looking almost CAT5 types?5- Any problem with the Loon cable?THanks guysPascal

Does anyone know of any online rental places ones that rent a wide variety of mics, in particular the Sanken CS3e and Schoeps CMC641? Or local rental houses, in or around the DC area? Thanks so much! Proctor Trivette South of the James Productions

Does anyone know someone who knows how to use the Audio Ltd 2040 wireless mics? I have two and I am having some RF problems. I think it has to do with the receiving antennas. They right next to each other on the receivers. How can they work as diversity receivers if the antennas are so close together?

I just purchased an RME Fireface 400 for use with Boom Recorder. I Plan to use it in situations where the 01V96 is not an option, such as driving shots, etc. I know that it's not quite the same as a mixer, with only the one digital knob, but without the availability of a quality battery powered firewire mixer, this seems the next best high quality option. If you've tried putting an 01V96, or even a mackie onyx and a laptop onto one of those process truck trays, you'll know what I'm saying. I will own a coop or sonosax one of these days!!! Has anyone else used the FF400 in the field like this? What can you report?
