Hello everyone, This is my first post, I am a sound mixer and occasional sound editor working from Madrid, Spain. Congratulations on the discussion group, enjoy it a lot, whenever I log in looking for information or checking on the latest discussions I almost always end up with the bonus of having a good laugh as well. I am interested to know how do you guys see the difference between mixing with knobs (CL8) and with vertical faders. I work with a 788T and although I do not own a CL8 yet, I have some doubts whether the action with the knobs is as immediate and smooth as with vertical faders, such as the ones in Cantarem or in a typical mixer. Is anyone using non…

Anyone run a 'condition' cycle with this charger? I have been running one for over 24 hours now and it still shows about 60% (discharging) The batteries are Powerex 2700mah. I wonder how much longer I have to wait for charged batteries!! The manual says up to 16 hours...

A while ago there was a thread about a wireless mini keyboard but I can't find it in the archives. I bought one from the US but it won't work with my DEVA or Sound Device's 702T. Whilst you have to shop around and try various keyboards to work with a Deva virtually any keyboard works with the 702 so I'm surprised that I can't get the wi-fi one to work. Someone on the thread said they were using one with a 744. Anyone remember the thread or using one with an SD product. Malcolm Davies. A.m.p.s.

Just got a 3rd zaxcom system (My other 2 are the older black model) This one is the new silver one with the Sta 150 I have two questions which the Zaxcom manual didn't answer: 1. The Sta 150 screw labeled "Output Level adjust" seems to do nothing I used the channel 1 &2 input screws to get tone to -20 but if I turn the "Output level adjust screw" nothing happens what does this screw control? 2. One of the cables I got with the unit to feed it via the mix out of my 442 mixer is very quiet to get tone to -20 I have to turn the the channel 1 & 2 inputs screws all the way open. Should the signal be this quiet? I don't plan on using this cable unless I need my othe…

I normally work doco so I'm able to deal with my own notes on a small notebook that I can transfer to Wave Agent at the end of the day. However, when I work drama I'm in need of something more substantial to keep my notes up to date. I'm wondering if there are any pre-printed ledgers with duplicate pages that people use for this purpose? I can go and make my own templates if needs be but I just don't want to be carrying too much with me on the move, so something that's pre-printed and A5 paper size would be ideal. Any tips on where to look? Thanks guys, Damien

Hi, In the case of a set up without a camera with jam sync for timecode, the case of a cheap documentary in video for instance (that's what I should be doing the most for a while) is there anyway to record in a separate device other than the camera whithout a clap also for sync reference (assuming that we won't have the time to do this and that spontaneity is a concern) and assure that everybody will be happy in post with image and audio beautifully together. I say this because I overheard something about a device that enables your recorder to follow the rec button of the camera: the cameraman would be in control; when he pushs rec, my recorder immediatly starts to …

I just added comtek 72 to my bag. I need to connect the tape out of my 442 to the transmitter. I'm looking for a mono 3.5 (mini plug into mixer) to a 2.5 (sub mini plug into comtek). I know I can use an adaper, but would prefer a built cable. I havent had any luck finding this particular item on line. Any body know where to find this? BTW, I'm assuming I need mono, but would stereo work as well?

A friend of mine who's a technician at a local College has had a few complainants from students about a buzzing noise from the Sony DSR-PD170. The college has about 6 of these cameras ranging from 3 to 1 years of age and they are serviced yearly. All 6 have this noise issue. He’s ruled out all the other equipment and the noise is coming from the cameras. I’ve googled the issue can’t find anything about it or issues about a similar noise. I’ve also worked with the PD170 on corporate gigs and never had complainants from editor’s or producers about noise. A sample of the noise can be heard in the link below. http://rosscollier.webs.com/pd170noise.htm The noi…

I've got a Sony F35 shoot tomorrow and because of the nature of the shoot there won't be a DIT on board. Also, neither the producer or the editor can offer spec specifics (say that fast ten times). I've looked through the camera manual and can find no info about whether the camera can be T/C jammed so I'm planning to cross jam from my 788T with a Lockit Box attached to the camera. I suspect that will cover the sync issues. but what about setting audio levels in the camera? Can anybody offer any caveats, suggestions or advice about recording to this camera? Obviously, I'll also be recording to my 788T. Thanks, Bruce

Sorry for the cross-post (if you're a DVXUser reader)... I'm looking for the break-away connector used in a Beta snake- I need to build a better mixer to camera cable than my current one (2 x XLR & 1 x 1/8" mini on each end)... It's a pain to disconnect the camera or mixer for each shot move. I suppose I could just use a 7-pin XLR pair, but that would mean sharing the ground with all 3 connectors, and I don't think that's the best idea. Oh, yeah- I'm hoping to find something that won't induce an apoplectic fit while trying to solder! John Moore sound.flyingmonkeystudio.com

I recently got a nice tip if you're interested in using rechargable 9 Volts in your TSC slate. I heard you could put a 9 volt in the slot where the battery slug goes and make a piece of wood cut to length to hold the pressure when you slide the door closed. When I tried it, we found the Ipower batteries to be slightly to big, and could easily get stuck. Our FX guy saw us messing about with it and suggested making the wooden spacer with 9 Volt clips glued to both ends. In fact, he made it for us. Now we put the 9 volt on a clip at one end of the spacer, and the clip at the other end makes contact with the slate. The battery is right there when you open the sliding doo…

I notice quite a few of the upper echelon feature mixers using the Yamaha 01V96 digital mixer. I'm sure it's a good board but I'm curious about the powering requirements and what guys are using as an inverter to maintain quality AC voltage and the nature of the DC power supply. On my cart I have two 33 amp hour truck batteries, but other than two overhead desk lamps, nothing that isn't DC. Mick

I have a job next week where they want a transcription never done one before first they wanted a mono cassestte which I quickly talked them out since I own a 702T I have a few questions: 1. Should I record a mono or stereo MP3? 2. Should I record a mono file and feed timecode to the other audio channel or should I just record the timecode via the lemo timecode in from the Sony F900? I have all the cables to do this. It seems straight forward I just want to make sure I do it right!

I would like to power a Lectrosonics R1A receiver from a Panasonic HDX900 camera using a old style MBATELIM battery eliminator. The R1A is modified for the battery eliminator. A friend had an issue with a using similar with a Panavision Genesis. From that experience "The R1a audio output ground and power supply ground are common, since when the unit operates on a battery there is no power to ground connection. If an external supply is connected and the audio output is connected to a device with the same power ground, things gets shorted." This hasn't been an issue with a SONY camera but has anybody done the same with the Panasonic HDX900? Thanks, Stephen

Editor I am working with wants to take his 8 AES outputs (4 XLRs) on his editing system and plug them into his 8 analog inputs on a mixer. Wants a simple stand alone box which does not require firewire control. Any suggestions?

Used model hd1400 for playback on a homemakover where talent views what previous homeowners say about their home changes. What I found bizaare about the deck is that the audio inputs in are xlrm and monitor and ch1+2 out are xlrf. Curious why that is. This is opposite any other gear I've used or come across. I had to use xlrm->xlrm turnarounds.

I operate out of a bag 90% of the time and seldom have issues with range with my Lectro 411's For when I am cart based however and further from the set I would like a cost effective way to get better range. Question: Can I get away with using one Directional or Dipole antenna? Which would give beter results for indoor/outdoor use? If I use an RF splitter to distribute that antenna to 3 or 4 Lectro 411's, how do I make up for lost gain? Any comments from those experienced would be most welcome and I am also emailing this to Lectrosonics to see what they recommend. Thanks, Jon Chiles

Hey guys, i've tried a search for this but i can't find a specific answer. i'm looking for something small that i can use in my bag when i'm out and about and would like to pick up the odd spot effect or ambience. ideally it would take a line in signal from my 442 and be small enough not to notice in my mixer bag but be of a useful enough quality to be usable. (i would be using schoeps CMIT or mk41 or rode stereo nt5) i read that the microtrack has a too short and unreplacable battery. the other options appear to be the R-09, the zoom h2 or h4, or a few korg options. anyone got any favourites that they think might suit my needs. appreciate any input. cheers, h…
