when i got my 788t/cl8 i made up a breakout cable for my it so it can be used the same way as a 442, with a 2 channel send to camera and 2 channel return as well as a timecode feed. and a set of camera tails with a timecode connector. another mixer who has my 788t on hire whilst he is waiting for his to arrive thinks these are a good idea and wants me to make some up for him too. now as work is quite slow at the minute, this seems to me like a good opportunity to get a bit of extra money coming in, and keep me busy on the days off, but because it would cost me a bit of money to get all the components i think i will need, im trying to gauge who useful this cable would be…

I'll be making some new cable soon, particularly short jumpers for use in mic-to-boom, boom-to mixer connections and want to see if I can find a consensus on the best way to do solder these up. Obviously pin1-ground, pin2-hot, pin3-reverse, but I wanted to see where you all stand on the more optional connection of pin1(cable shield) to the XLR shell lug, as well as the idea of using ferrite beads and capacitors to soak up extra RF/EMI. If anyone has been implementing these kinds of "extras" into their audio cable with success I'd love to hear about it. I've heard many opinions and positions on these oft-overlooked details. Some people firmly believe that th…

Couldn't find this on the post anywhere, so I hope this isn't a repeat... Has anyone experienced this problem? I've had my stereo link for a year or so, and the receiver would occasionally powers itself off, and until last week I couldn't replicated the situation. During a tape change, I watched as the cameraman put the camera down, somewhat forcefully, and noticed the receiver powered down. Bingo! It turns out that, when on battery power, and if the unit gets bumped, it will power down. I could easily replicate this by tapping lightly on the bottom of the unit, and in this instance, the camera's 12V output connector was not working so I had to power with batterie…

I have a PS-1 from Denecke that works great. Last weekend, I was going to have 2 booms on a run n gun rig so I hooked up the rarely needed PS-2 box. The NTG-3 sounded great but my NTG-1 was giving me what I would describe as white noise. I changed inputs, cables, battery to no avail. Same noise whether 1 or both mics were connected. Hooked up to phantom through mixer and sounds fine, just looking to conserve mixer battery power. Does anyone know if its the NTG-1 being picky about phantom or if there any ways to check the PS-2 box? It happened before but just got to really troubleshoot this weekend. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Hugh

I have a question that hopefully someone out there can answer; why is it that on the Generation 1 & 2 Stereo Zaxcom transmitters/receiver combos that the output level of the receiver can not operate at line line; ie. When I send tone I have to operate the receiver at mic level to get the camera input to be within the normal pot range. The Tx level is set to 28. To get the receiver to get anywhere near line level I have to crank the Tx level to 50! With the newer Tx 900 I can set the receiver to line level. I guess my question is in two parts. What level do you set you Tx at, and has anyone else come across to Gen 1/2 vs new 900 lone level difference. Hope …

Greetings Group I am about to build my premier cart setup and even though I have covered most of the aspects after thorough investigation and feedback there are still some issues that need to be solved. The cart I am getting is the rast order vk cart --> http://www.rastorder.com.au/product_vkmain.htm because the design and sturdiness really suit my needs and I like very much the modular design concept plus Rob is a very helpful and enthusiastic individual who is up for modifying each cart to suit specific needs. Ii is still not 100% clear to me which antenna setup I should use and also how to setup the mast. The VK cart has a dedicated antenna pole holder so it …

Hey, With the new Zaxcom TRX992 transmitter with built in IFB receiver the brain started to wonder. What do guys use now? What are boom operators/mixers using to send their boom to the mixer and get a return to the boom op for monitoring? The Remote Audio Boom Cable System with talkback? A comtek? A XLR cable sending and a long headphone extension? Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Hey everybody. I've been a daily visitor of this board for a long time now, but haven't contributed to any of the discussions until now. I've encountered a problem that I couldn't find any way around, so I'm looking to the community for some suggestions. I recently updated a 788t to 1.60 to use with a CL-8. After doing so, the audio going to camera, ifb, and my headphones sporadically became mutilated. I tried reinstalling the firmware, disconnecting the CL-8, everything I could think of. Then I found this on Sound Devices' website: --------------- Known Issues An intermittent condition can occur where audio at the headphone output and audio at an analog …

A cameraguy I work with occasionally is buying a HDX900 and asked me for some opinions on a good camera mounted mic. Pani wants $1250 for their stock one so im sure there are some better options. I was leaning towards an mkh50 for the cardioid type sanken cs1 for a shotgun Ive never really concerned myself with an onboard mic before so I'd love to hear some opinions.

A while back an issue was brought up on this group and on “rampsâ€ by someone having peak distortion problems (severe crackling during dialog peaks) occurring somewhere between their Sound Devices SD-442 mixer’s balanced TA-3 outputs and their Zaxcom TRX-900 transmitter’s stereo input adapter. The same issue was reported (and confirmed) when using the unbalanced TA-3 outputs of the Cooper CS-104. The symptoms were: There was no problem when using a transformer-balanced or active-balanced line level output when using a normal, shielded pair, straight through cable. Testing with the SD-442 transformer balanced outputs and the SD-302 active balanced outputs conf…

This topic has been covered in the past a few time, but I would like to revisit. I have spoken with 3 different companies: Dewitt & Stern, Robertson-Taylor, & Supple-Merrill & Driscoll, Inc. They all seem to offer the Fireman's Fund Mcgee policy. The coverages seem to cover all the same losses and exclusions. Dewitt Stern and Robertson Taylor are the more affordable and offer no territorial restrictions, but Supple-Merrill does not cover much of the Middle East. Robertson- Taylor : for $42,000 of coverage its is about $620 year with $250 deductible per loss Dewitt Stern: for $42,000 coverage is $617 per year with $1,000 deductible per loss Supple…

Hi All, I posted the following to the Deva User's Group as well... Just took delivery today of the new Mix-8 (s/n 1), and wish to report my findings to the group. First off, kudos to Glenn & Company for providing a lower-cost fader panel alternative to the Mix-12. While naturally less feature-oriented than its big brother, the new Mix-8 truly allows the Deva/Fusion owner to expand their mixer/recorder's functionality into a standalone production console. The design of the Mix-8 is in keeping with the Fusion, Deva 5.8 & 16 lines, and the fit and finish is top-notch. That said, however, there were some last-minute design changes I wasn't expecting, along w…

I was wondering if it is feasible to use the 2 TA3 digital outputs 1-4 of the 788t into a snake and feed a camera equipped with AES in ? Are there limits to how long a cable you can use with AES3 ? And with AES3's different spec for cable, is there a good cable to use in this scenario ?

Hi all, I know some of you who have posted cart pictures use a dual-monitor rackmount setup for your video monitors and wondering if any of you can comment, suggest, discourage, etc on particular models. Ideally I'm looking for a setup where the monitors could receive broadcast but I don't think there are any out there that do so. I'm also going to get a shipping case for a rig I'm building and am curious about pros and cons of the various ones. I know many people use the SKB cases and any information and experience with those or others would also be very helpful. Thanks very much!

Hi, First post! I'm looking into buying a recorder over the next few days as i seem to be involved in so much unpaid work at the moment I can't be dealing with borrowing and hiring a recorder every day. I was looking at the Edirol R44, which doesnt look too bad, but the preamps are bound to be noisey, so i'd need to buy a decent mixer as well i guess. I started looking around at DAT machines like the Fostex PD4, which seems to have an excellent raport with recordists, and DAT machines seem to be going for silly prices, do these machines make much noise as they are mechanical and do they sound good with mics direct? I'm really trying to stay below £500 sterling, hav…

I wonder what would be a good case for 788T and four (or sometimes up to six) Lectro receivers. Would be nice to hear what case other 788T users are using and could recommend? If the case has room for CL-8, that would be a plus, but not essential. Anybody using Eargonizer with 788T? Or PortaBrace AR-788? If so, please tell me about your feelings and which model you use. Thanks, Pietari

Just bought a set of Sennheiser wireless from the Wexler ebay sale. Something that struck me as odd when I received them was that the antennas for the Blue range receivers 584-607MHz have about a 1/2" difference in length. I know that antenna length is important but is the half inch difference something to worry about or maybe there is a reason for the difference? Anyone with info on proper length for sennheiser wireless units ek3041 and sk50 I'd love to know.. I also have 'green' units. Also, should the transmitter antenna length be the same as the Rx length? Thanks for the help! -d

Yesterday, Lectrosonics sent me back the very first SR/5P converted into a (*mostly) SRa /5P. (*I say mostly because there is one more modification coming; the external 5P connector (a.k.a “wartâ€) will be moved from the right side to the left so that it doesn’t interfere with Camera operators who shoot from the hip. The machining for that mod is still a few weeks or so out.) As you can see, the SR-SRa revision took the fixed antennas and swapped them out for the SMA style antennas we see on the UM style transmitters. This is being done for two reasons: first, some users wished that the antennas were shipping out 100% upright or had concerns that the fixed an…

I'm using 3 788ts in parallel for a Bravo show in January. I've managed to get them to go into record simultaneously with frame accuracy thanks to tech help from Joe Ramos at Sound Devices. I've got two concerns that I would like some help with from the members of this group. 1) MANAGING AUDIO DATA My plan is to rotate 32Gb CF cards into a FW800 card-reader throughout the day to keep my file transfers short. According to SD, I cannot transfer to 3 media simultaneously when I record more than 8 tracks (it can record 8 iso's and 4 mix tracks). I've decided that the int. HD and CF are my best choice for reliability. I will have 3 harddrives to get data from at the …

I have read some old threads that cover this but there still seem to be alot of options for Schoeps CMC6/MK41 indoors. I have a MKH 50 that I use a softie on but I feel like it does colour the sound somewhat, Are the hollow foam balls or teardrops the way to go? Can you get away with them in very light winds? Are the B5D or W5D worth the money? Jon Chiles

So I'm trying to decide if I want to wrap my new short pole in bike handlebar tape (as my other one is), or just leave it clean. It's a 12' Ambient QP480 that I'm eventually going to cable up externally. Anyone have strong opinions for or against wrapped poles? Both listeners' and users' opinions are equally valid. Thanks, Brian
