I'm looking for some first hand experience from users who have used and compared these 2 mixers. I'm in the market for a mixer for my bag rig. I have rented the Alphamix from a fellow sound mixer numerous times and I'm very familiar with it by now. In my opinion, the pros of the Alphamix are the following: - NP1 or AA Alkaline Battery operation. - Support up to 3 camera outputs - Direct outs (Pre fader) - T Power availability - LED input levels on each channel - Power distribution for wireless The Cons are the following - Signal still passes through when gain is all the way down - Noisy preamps - Preamps overloads easily So pretty much, my main gripe…

I'm looking to see if anyones found any small battery testers out there (9v, AA) that give an accurate voltage readout on the display rather than the old good or no good reading. I've been carrying around a multimeter when I'm working as a cableman but it seems like there could be a quicker way to get a quick read on a partially used battery. Thanks! Mike Ford

Please forgive me if this topic has been covered in the past, but what are some of your favorite process trailer director to talent communication solutions? And yes a walkie would work just fine, however Im going to be spending a few weeks on a process trailer and would love set something semi permanent up. Bartek

Hi All, Found this new mixer online... http://www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=52 Interesting layout with lots of outputs including FireWire. Has compressors, eq, limiters and effects on every channel. Obviously designed for live sound, but seems like it could be very capable. AC-only power hog with all the DSP, but definitely sexier than the Mackie Onyx series. Cheers, B

I'm sitting here watching the Bill Mahar show and my curiosity is getting the best of me. I'm noticing the lav mics on Bill and the 3 person panel and the lav mics have, what appear to be, two individual mic elements on each person. They look like they could be trams but each person has 2 identical looking mics attached to the same tie clip on their clothes. Is this a redundant back up mic or are they doing some kind of noise canceling function Like the COS-11x? Would this require each person to wear 2 different transmitters or are they, somehow, wired to a single transmitter? Oh yea, and while we're on the subject of lavs.... I noticed on American Idol, Ryan Seacrest wo…

My first time with a Deva. I was just on a little industrial video recording an improvised sales pitch about an advertising company. Long takes (15-20 minutes) and three EX-1 cameras meant I was relying on up to 5 lavs to be used simultaneously. I had a rough time trying to mix 7 people down to two tracks on the last gig, so this time I convinced production to rent a Deva. It was beautiful experience. My partner and I got there early to set-up our little base in an office cubicle and got to work coordinating frequencies. I had 5 Lectro UM400s transmitting to 411As and outputting to a Deva V. Everything went swimmingly. I had been reading the manual all weekend, an…

Hi, I can't seem to get either of my mixers (Mix-Pre & 302) to power up using Powerex AA batteries (2700mah, rechargeables) Alkalines are fine. I keep fresh batteries in the internal tube as backup, but use external power normally. Has anyone else experienced this? -JP

Just bought the vest harness from petrol. Just like to find out if anyone else out there have problems making the harness fit to your body. Now the weight distribution is on my shoulders but my back is not cushioned by the harness.

What are your thoughts? How do you monitor? How do you handle slate, talkback and comm with boom op? TIA, Larry

I just got home from AES in SF. Probably the coolest thing I saw for us location soundies was the new firmware Sound Devices was showing for the 788T (and supposedly port-able to the older recorders) that allows editing of metadata on the machine itself--ie you can correct scene+take names before, during or after recording, the metadata is changed as well and the metadata is changed on ALL RECORDED MEDIA. Pretty cool. I specifically asked if that meant that your corrections would go to HD, CF AND DVDRAM, and the answer was yes. The CL8 is cool, and there are some improvements to Wave Agent (can name tracks now). Philip Perkins

Hi everyone. I think I'm having some powering issues while using my Neumann and Sanken microphones with my Sd302. I work mostly shooting documentaries in crazy countries so I try to pack as light as possible, means I've been powering the 302 with the internal batteries. Now I need to decide between getting a NP1 battery adapter or Denecke Phantom power supply for the microphones. obviously I like the price, the size and the weight of Denecke, but I don't want to sacrifice sound quality either. can somebody help me to choose what direction to go?

Is Zaxcom's ZFR100 (or one of their transmitters with internal recording) the cheapest, small recording option with timecode? I'd like to replace my Edirol R09 which is delicate and lacks timecode and long battery life. A.

Hello everyone, I have just left my first week of shooting which went pretty good I thought. I had quite a few scenes with ladies in high heels, but with my limited experience I didn't bring anything with me. So the first time I was confronted with the art department found a few pieces of cork and I put these under the heels with double sided tape, it worked kind of. The next time I couldn't find any cork, but I did see a wide rubber band to bound a bunch of mail with, cut it into pieces and put in under the heel with double sided tape. It worked very well and the comment from the lady: "what the hell did you put under my shoe it is springy, like wearing a sneake…

Has anyone been having issues lately with powering a Zaxcom Stereo Receiver off of the camera itself? I have 4 Hirose to Locking DC power cables (never know when one will fail on you) - and lately, it seems more often than not I can't power the unit externally? When I test with the power tap, it powers up. Not with the DC out. I would just use the power tap, but the camera guys need this for their lights, etc.... Is it possibly the camera not outputting power out of this DC out? Or are the batteries they are using possibly not being able to supply enough power to handle the draw of the Receiver? ~Thomas

Hi to All Wanted some advise from the RF gurus on the forum. Just starting a new series of a reality show. Usually I run 16 Lectros in block 27 (Australia). The EP has just told me that there will be 20 contestants for the 1st 5 weeks. Is there anyway I can squeeze 20 transmitters into one block? I understand there will be some trade-offs, but is it remotely possible, or do I have to go back to the drawing board? Your input is eagerly anticipated Chris B

Given the amount of RED camera shoots that are appearing now, does anyone as a matter of equipment needed, carry red audio cables in their gear? http://www.coffeysound.com/product.php?productid=796 I haven't done a red shoot yet, but I'm going to assume that I should go buy these cables, because more than likely no one is going to care in the picture department about sound. Therefore, you can't rely on the DP having the sound hardware he should, or that comes with the camera, right? -Richard

Hello group! I´m building my first cart (I´ll post some pictures next week, when I get the base done...), I have an upright Magliner frame with the 10 inch pneumatic wheels, two Gator rack- cases (8U and 12U) and two 4 inch castor wheels for the front of the base. The upper rack will hold the antenna distribution, receivers, recorder, mixer, power distribution, patch bay (in the backside) and some storage space (hopefully...) The lower case will hold the battery (or batteries) and more storage space. I´m trying to fit everything so that, if necesarry, I´ll have space in the upper Gator- case so much that I can fit one 33ah battery in there and operate everyth…

I'm trying to put together my rig slowly purchasing pieces of gear here and there. I do occasional indie features. I have been renting most of the stuff from a fellow sound mixer, but it's time to get my own gear. I need boom mics, one for exterior and one for interior. The only mics I've used and am familiar with are the Sanken CS3e, MKH60, MKH50, ME66/K6, and Rode NTG-2. The last 2 are out of the question.....garbage. So with my budget, which 2 mics would be good all around for some indie features? I'm also interested in hearing opinions on the new MKH8000 series as an interior mic. The price seems reasonable.

Anyone use power backups? I'm thinking of getting a ACP backup unit for the cart.. like perhaps a 500+ watts. Are these quite enough for the set? Thanks -Richard

I am currently using version 3.43 and have had no problems with it. I can do variable folders playback DVD's and anything else I need. The series I work on is doing an 18 day shoot. Normally we do 8 days per episode so my folder #'s have been no problem up till now. Is there a software version that will let me do more than four digits for folder names? Our post department has had me change from fat 32 to UDF because of supposed drop out issues. Has anybody else experienced this. I can not playback from the internal DVD drive in UDF and has been a bit of a pain.

Wanted to check in the wider world if anyone is experiencing this issue with their Zaxcom Stereoline transmitter. Occassionally when I power up the unit fails to power up - no little flashing LED - no signal transmitted. Turn the power off and on again (Hawkswoods adapter) and up it comes. I have spoken to friends and they report experiencing the same Any comments - Fixes? Thanks Chris B

I have two Sennheiser 300 series IEM transmitters and 6 receivers. I intend to use one transitter for director/scripty/video village and the second as foldback for the Boom op, each transmitter being fed different foldback mixes from the Cantar. Both are in the same band – 786-822 MHz. Of course, I will have to set the working frequency on one transmitter different from the second one, say the first one at 786 and the second one at 822. Do you think it is possible to use one single dipole antenna (the lectro SNA) to feed both transmitters, and if so will I need a passive splitter or something else?
