My main mixer right now is a SD 442. I actually use it on my cart or bag depending on the gig/location. Been thinking of getting a dedicated cart mixer. Macie or Onix looks good. Not sure if I'm ready to jump into a 'pro' mixer, and at 8k to 20k seams like a huge jump too me. Cooper would have been my first choice, but if they are discontinuing them... Perhaps looking into a PSC maybe. The Macie or Onix, is there someone out there converting these to 12v?

ETS has a line of CAT-5 baluns specifically designed for audio. Using a pair of these provides a good 4-way snake, an alternative to 4-pair, XLR standard cable snakes. I have built lots of 4-way snakes to use like a stage box where I can make one long run from the cart to the set and connect 2 duplex boom cables (I know, everyone is using wireless boom so this doesn't matter to most) and possible a plant mic. It would make it much simpler to make a single CAT-5 run. Also useful as a snake when doing car rig stuff. The baluns each have 4 XLR's and these can be 4 males on one end, 4 females on the other, or 3 males, 1 female each end (for a monitor send --- really just a se…

I've had commercial plates on my work van for nearly 25 yrs, and always thought it was an extra advantage re: city parking. Nowadays a lot of downtown yellow zones are metered (at absurdly high rates)--I wonder if the commercial plates are worth the extra cost anymore? In the suburbs there are still lots of unmetered yellow zones, so they are useful there. Philip Perkins

I'm sure this has been talked about here. The SUV that I have is just getting a bit too small now, with all the equipment that I've got now. Adding in Blankets, a few cones perhaps, maybe a tarp or two... Anyway, I'm thinking about one of those Chev Astro Vans, or a similar small van. Seams small enough to park around LA, large enough for a Magliner Cart and Util Cart plus other items. Lots of older 05's out there as fleets are upgrading vans these days.. Thoughts?

Hey all, The show I'm on at the moment are looking for a solution for enabling the field producers to have wireless LCD monitors. I brought my own little wireless monitor setup, which was a very small transmitter and combo receiver/TV (think little hand held baby monitor) but at the moment it is pending repairs, and the producers have complained that the monitor was too small, and not 16:9 Production have sourced some cheapo LCD monitors, and at the same time bought some cheapo video Tx/Rx, but they were very unreliable, and relied on a stupid amount of batteries to power the monitors and Rx. The same with the Tx, where 8 x AA were needed to be strapped to the camer…

Really really weird: I got 4 BDS cables for the Zax stereo 900 Rxs from Remote Audio, and I made one myself out of the connector they include. (Took apart an existing Lectro BDS cable.) The Remote Audio cables only work on one outlet on one of my BDS v.2 boxes! Only one out of all 12, and this with testing all 4 Remote Audio cables with all 3 Zax Rxs! (On one BDS box, one outlet works, on the other none!) The Zax Rxs don't power up unless it's connected to that one outlet. Why on Earth would only one outlet work, as far as I knew they were all wired identical? Every other outlet works with Lectro Rxs, so I don't think it's the BDS boxes. Funny thing is the…

Ok, here is the situation and i am a little confused. I have heard this problem before but on a recent job it was magnified a great deal. I had five characters in the back seats of 12 passenger van. The characters were wired with a variety of Lecto UM-400, SM and SMD transmitters-Sanken COS-11. Blk 26 and blk 27. I was recording to PD-606 loaded up with Lectro-411As. Recorder powered by internal batts and the 411s powered by BDS system. Shotgun, CS-3e. All good solid canare star quad cable. Nothing exotic here. I heard it before on a different job driving slower with less characters and recording to my PD-6. I was hearing loud pops in my a…

where is Capt. Cut'n Paste??? As we have a number of folks using, and considering the Yamaha Digital mixers: " Yamaha Corporation of America has updated their famed 01V96V2 and 02R96V2 Digital Mixing Consoles. While there is no change in the retail price, the new 01V96VCM and 02R96VCM models retain the powerful V2 features and add a host of powerful VCM effects pre-installed. " http://blog.mixonline.com/briefingroom/2008/05/13/yamaha-updates-01v96-and-02r96-digital-mixers/ and, good news: " Customers who purchased an 01V96V2 or 02R96V2 from January 1, 2008 are eligible to receive a free update CD. I'm working on a piece this weekend for a food show. The setup will be six women seated around a kitchen counter and talking about food. The producers dont want to deal with lavs, so I need to capture it all with overhead mics. I'm thinking if I drop a pair of cardiod mics above the group and place them appropriately, I can get the whole group. I know that schoeps and neumann make some great cardioid capsule mic systems, but I was hoping to find something a little cheaper. I would like to add these mics to my kit. Anyone know of an inexpensive condenser cardiod mic that I would sound good (preferably something that could match my sanken cs3e reasonably well). Hopin…

It has been announced that the Sonosax 8-track recorder/mixer should ship by the end of May. Not sure whether it is the 4-track version or the 8-track version that is ready to go. SONOSAX SX-R4 - Jeff Wexler

There's news of Cinela's ZEPHYX windshield for smaller microphones mounted on OSIX suspensions on the web site of Paris sound equipment supplier DCA. \ http://www.dcaudiovisuel.com/news_info.php/newsPath/9/news_id/61/language/en The new ZEPHYX windscreen has several new benefits: - Wind protection is increased thanks to the ovoid shape and to better capsule position within windscreen volume. - It is possible to use basic fabric alone (without fur), even with rather high wind, and so, to have very good acoustic transparency. - The lack of "cage effect" (standing waves) is real: no disorder in the upper medium. - The addition of a furry envelope is possible, i…

hi guys. im hoping someone might be able to offer me some advice with a job ive got at the end of this month. im going to be shooting some surfing in HUGE waves and the director wants me to be able to capture good sound while the surfers are communicating and co-ordinating their towing (on jetskis) ive seen many scenes where the recordist has been able to capture sound with radio mics used in splash proof bags etc BUT for my gig id need a 100% watertight setup that could possbily get wiped out by a 20ft wave. sound impossible huh? well it has been done on this directors last shoot doing the same thing however the recordist is located on the other side of the plane…

This is really quite silly and I am only posting it because I found it amusing. From Macworld site: SuperMegaUltraGroovy and Toastycode on Friday announced the release of TapeDeck, a new audio recording application for Mac OS X v10.5 or later. A demo is available; the full version costs $25. TapeDeck carries with it some retro charm — it’s designed to look like a cassette tape deck, and even operates like one, complete with a tape deck-style interface. It’s designed to quickly capture recordings, stored as “tapes,â€ recorded directly to MP4-AAC audio. TapeDeck is aimed at users who want to make band recordings, practice speeches or capture lectures, accordi…

Hi Guys, This is my first post here. I wanted to see if anyone has used or tested this new wireless antenna system form Lectro yet? What are your thoughts and comments. I was on Lectro's site and saw this link to the wireless antenna system. If it works this could be a coup for all of us who do reality shows. I thought this might be a good discussion for all who use wireless systems in all different situations.

About a year ago, I abandoned my Senn MKH-60's and starting using the Schoeps CMIT-5 as my short shotgun to go along with my MK-41's. They match very well and like a lot of people, I did discover that you don't want to use them too close as I don't think they sound that good if you are under 18 inches, but otherwise they are great. I always keep the low-cut filter on and if I am using them outdoors I put the +5 on as well. Outdoors though I am not completely sold. Last week we were doing some loud effects work and decided to pull out and dust off the 60 for the shot and was amazed at how much brighter (could be a good and bad thing) it was and I am considering going b…

I've found a cheap little voltage converter that outputs steady 5 vdc from a 2 - 30 volt input. If you're running a Marantz 660 or 620 for transcription this will enable you to power it from your BDS through the recorder's power connector or direct to the battery tabs (preserves battery life read-out on the recorders). I've already glued and wired mine inside the AA battery holder of a 660 and it works great with a Sony camcorder battery. http://www.dimensionengineering.com/DE-SW050.htm Can't beat the price. -- Eric

Dear All, Here we go again off to battle with another new camera never seen and will not be seen till the first day of shooting this movie…. Armed with the Name, "RED" --- bringing to mind a dragon eating an entire sound team... Misinformation abound of software updates and functions, fabled, enabled, disabled, never cabled connectors fused with the nostrils of a fire breathing dragon in wait… Tough times for finding a Dragon Slayer – I found one in the Hollywood forest, Slaughtering superstition and the myth surrounding "RED'S" In's and outs… Today Robert Kennedy (Coffey Sound) physically confronted "RED". Sticking lemo's, mini XLR's, tri-leve…

I just changed a block 22 lectro UM400 from 400 mode to 200 mode. When I turned it on after making the switch (freq still set to position 00), my digital cable blinked out! I retried it three times to confirm that indeed, every time I turned the xmtr on, the cable went to packets for a frame or two, then black. The moment the power switched off on the lectro, the cable comes back like nothing ever happened. Curious.

So I thought that one of the benefits of the Lectro digital hybrid wireless was that a scanner was not able to receive these signals. A transpo guy came up to me yesterday asking what frequency I transmit. He was asking, because he was listening to the set in his truck, and then suddenly wasn't getting it any more. He showed me the scanner (very consumer grade) and it was set for a frequency an actor's wire was using, but since no longer in the scene the transmitter was off. I showed him the frequency for my Comtek, and asked that he please only monitor that, since he would always have the set, and off he went. Now...I know actors should always be aware when th…

Does anyone have any experience with this capsule? I have some work where overhead space is a premium, and this seems like a perfect solution. Is this capsule indistinguishable from the MK41 other than being side address?
