Received my DPA 4017 shotgun demo today and put it to use on the show I'm working. Other than being very lightweight (much lighter than my Schoeps w/GVC swivle) and very nice looking (stylistically it goes great with the Sonosax SX-ST board), it appearantly holds up well with very loud voices. One scene today involved serious yelling, but we decided to keep the mic close anyway (12" on the closeup) to overcome some loud ambience. There was no breakup during moments that I would have had to add the 10dB pad on the Sennheiser MKH series. It sounded great, and had no proximity effect problems working that close. More on the mic later next week, but I'm convinced it's goin…

Hi All The wet weather continues (in Sydney - still no talk of the drought being declared over) and was looking for comments on ways to waterproof Rycote zeppelins - with 416 under heavy rain everything usually stops after 20- 30 minutes. Really surprised the mic lasts that long. I've got 4 camera units (in the rain, if it's raining) with 416 full zep/windjammer combo and would love to hear from someone that has used or sells something that will keep them ticking over. Not so worried about the sound of the rain hitting the blimp (it's obvious it's raining) but would like to keep the 416 nice and dry so the fun can keep on happening. Thanks

Hi, I just purchased an H2 and I'm very surprised with the sensitivity of the line input. It seems to be looking for a hot headphones level maybe? Coming from the aux out of my SD 302 and with H2's input level at max. (127) the signal level is way too low. The only way of achieving a normal recording level is through H2's mic input, wich I would like to avoid. Is my H2 behaving normally or there's something wrong in it? Anyone else observed funny input sensitivity, either low or high? Thanks, Fernando

Just wondering if anyone is using one of the first Lectro SR receivers. I know they're not supposed to be delivered to retailers until February, but a little birdy told me their are units out there right now being tested. Any feedback from those users would be appreciated. I'm thinking not only will this make a nice hop to cameras, but also an easy way to save some weight (and maybe some power draw ?) in our ENG bags.

Better late than never, I have some comments regarding the Zaxcom TRX 900 wireless. I have been fortunate in the past doing movies that require very little wireless work and have always relied on my Audio Ltds (older 2000 model) which have worked beautifully and sound terrific. I finally have had to abandon my Audios because they are NOT frequency agile at all and they have already been re-crystalled twice (at a cost of about $3000.). So, I have been using the Zaxcom TRX 900 now for 5 weeks on my current movie. I am not using any of the extended and unique features, no recording, no IFB, no remote, just using them as straight wireless. I can safely say without reserva…

Hey All, I'm heading to India for a gig next month, and I'm wondering what frequencies people have had success with there. We will cover a large area of the country, including Dehli, Mumbai, Dehradun, Kerala, and Jaipur. Vin, you out there? Also any tips, advise, must-sees, etc.? Thanks alot, Tom

I know there is the Lectrosonic UT400 Hand held wireless, which I assume would work with my current 411 receiver (obviously if ordered in the same block), but what other portable options are there? Seems most of the wireless hand held (AKA Stick) mics are designed for stage use and I need this mic for man in the street sort of thing. Thanks, Wayne

Hi there, I`ve got a Cooper CS208D V1 hooked up to a SD744T. As the mixer doesn`t have output limiters and the 744 only got limiters in the mic ins I need to use a pad if I wanna use limiters of the 744. Specs of the 208 says that output imp is 100Ohm. What minimum load does it need to look at? 600Ohm or even more? There is a transformer version on the market with 600Ohm. But maybe I should use a resistor version instead that works as an imp converter as well? Regards, Matt.

I'll be heading to Venezuela in the new year, and most likely into the jungles for one of those crazy Nat Geo shoots. Just wandering if anyone here had any experiences working in the amazon, any tips on protecting the gear etc. Also, any general travel tips? This will be my first time in South America. Fairly standard kit: PSC Alphamix, 411/400 Lectros, MKH416 etc - probably overkill as it will most likely end up being all boom work. We are hunting giant tarantulas. Any help appreciated! Jason

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. Don't know if anyone has posted this on here before, but here is a plastic holder for loose batts: Hoping it will help me keep up with my iPowers a bit better. They have some Holiday Specials listed here which is what I ordered to try out. Main website is Tools Aviation. David

Does anyone use the Heil PR-20? This is how they bill it at the Sound Room, "The PR-20 has a comparable sound to the finest condenser microphone."

What is everybody using for rain gear? I have both MTO slickers but neither of them are very easy to work with when you are in a hurry. Rob

Hi All, I have a Peluso CMEC6 which is considered by some to sound much like the Schoeps hyper. I've noticed that it seems to accentuate sibilance on primarily female voices. I had a similiar issue with a Sennheiser MKH50 and was curious if this a hyper cardiod issue in general, or something noticed by others with these particular mics. I had never heard the MKH50 before and liked it except for the sibilance. I am familiar with the Schoeps hyper and don't remember having an issue with sibilance on it. I had a foam windscreen on the Peluso, and none on the Sennheiser, and it was a just above the frame sit down interview. The main subject had a softer, sibilant voice…

I have a call into Zaxcom already about this, just waiting to get the call back. I thought I would ask anyone that has this setup to try this and see if they have the same issue. The TRX900AA with stereo adapter being feed from the 442 via the TA3 main output. All outputs are at line level. The TA3's are distorting, badly. When I come out of the XLR mains, no distortion. The 10-pin, no distortion. I tried new cables, six in fact, and it still distorts. I figured, could it be my mixer? So I tried another 442, and got the same results. Hardwired to the camera, gets no distortion also. Could this be because it's an unbalanced capable output, and the TRX might not dig…

The KT-STUART bag for Cantar arrived and I just shipped the original design back to GOTHAM SOUND. It is a remarkable improvement and cost $100 less than the original. This bag is a bit heavier and built like a soft padded box. Came with both a 2-section clear raincover and a padded cover. Raincover is joined by second flap that will cover radios only while leaving Cantar open to operate under clear-cover. Whereas the original bag was 3 different pouches buckled and velcroed together, this is one large compartment with velcroe dividing sections, ala Pelican case dividers. There are still external clips and velcroe to add an additional outside pouch It arrived set up…

I'm getting a little tired of vision delays on LCD's used for video assist systems. Typically the delay seems to be around 4- 6 frames. For some reason, everyone on set seems to think this a sound problem. The people who supply the video assist systems say there's no LCD's video monitors available with low delay - say 1 frame. When I suggest that there's no problem with CRT's the video assist crew all get grumpy and start mumbling about how heavy they and the director wanting a large monitor (to watch a low res picture from a film camera tap!) On my current shoot, I purchased a Behringer Shark DSP110 and settled on 0.25 seconds delay on the Comtek feed. This was fine…

I saw a link to a nice stick-on two-wire digital voltmeter (really thin and about 1"x2" IIRC) either here or on ramps but I lost the link. Anyone here remember what it was? D.

All, Looking to pick up a pair of sharkfins, and was wondering if there was any real difference, other than price and on some models, frequency block. For example, PSC sells a 4xx-9xx frequency model that is significantly less than the Lectro version. Thanks in advance! Phil

Jp, You asked if I was happy with my Cantar X2 #515. I am ecstatic. Last week I had reserved for spending time with Cantar to become familiar enough to take it on a job. Then a 3 day job came up that required mulititracks on the days I had planned to spend with my Cantar. The general consensus is that Cantar has a steep learning curve. Added to this perception is all the "codes" that must be broken to understand Cantar operations. ie, sol-fil-tom switches and TPWAN. To keep this note short I just want you to know that I nervously decided to take a "sink or swim" approach, and I left my backup DAT and Sonosax Mixer at home and went out on this job with only …

Do any mixers use these? I know some dialog editors who swear by them - one says it cuts out all the traffic noise outside her window. I feel like they might be fine for airplane noise and traffic but might behave in an undesirable way in more dynamic environments. A.

A general question to the power RF users I'm after real user feedback about the Lectro VR Field system - or antenna split system for multiple 411a receivers in over the shoulder bag system I have a set up with 3X four 411a receivers (block 28) in an over the shoulder bag configuration. I want to increase the range at certain events and was wondering what members experiences are with the VR Field - ie, extra range. Or if anyone has tried a split dipole/sharkfin system with 4 receivers with an in-the-bag setup. Or anything else..... that has better distance results Thnks Chris B

Saw a new Porta Brace bag wet weather cover over at B&H. As the longest drought in white history seems to breaking at the start of a 4 month (mainly exterior) shoot I was wondering if anyone has actually seen it and can pass comment on it's effectiveness. Cheers Chris B

I have plenty of experience with hiding lavs but not as much in protecting a COS11 and B6, mounted exposed and visible ENG style, from skyscraper-top wind. I feel like the basic wind protection they come with might not be enough and am concerned how overcovers and/or a lav furry will look. A.

I use my SD DVD-RAM drive to mirror recordings from the 744T. One night while working on the process trailer, I noticed every time I called "Speed" into the walkie, my 744T would beep, and I'd get a message that said, "EXT Drive Offline". The graphic that showed the available space on the DVD-RAM disappeared, and I'd have to re-boot the recorder to get my DVD-RAM back online. I experienced this again when a P.A. walked past my cart, talking into his walkie. So it seems that my 744T/DVD-RAM drive "hiccups" every time there is a walkie-talkie transmission at close range. Has anyone else experienced this? Lee Ascher Los Angeles, CA
