I know that some of you have experience with each. My buddy just bought a 208 and put it up at work and noticed that the mics sounded boomier to him on the 208 than the 106. I brought the 208 home and ran a 40hz tone through the mic pres of each and noticed subtle differences but nothing dramatic other than the 208 looked cleaner. I used an osc through the mic pres then came out a main out so I wasn't really just looking at the pres specifically but the whole chain. Does anyone have any opinions on the sound of each unit? TIA, LL Thanks to Take and his BR for the Analyzer.

A fellow mixer and I was discussing Rx/Tx antennas and orientation. How it's best to have the receiver antennas in the same direction as the transmit antenna for best possible signal. So I looked at his bag, and all of his receiver antennas are bent over due to whatever cause(packing, transport, etc). I know you've seen it, mine did that also. They never keep their shape. Some end up bent together, some splayed apart. Some practical horizontal with enough usage. So I thought I'd bring up the remote audio whip antennas that don't bend. He scoffed, saying way expel more money when it doesn't matter. So I brought up our previous talk about orientation, and pointed out that h…

What CF brand are you using? There appears to be some HUGE $$ differentials between manufactures. What should I look for to see if they are worth the $100+ savings?

Anyone have any thoughts and experience with this piece of gear? Some of my clients can't use DVD-RAM discs from the 7 series burner, but want DVD-R discs. Will this burn to DVD-R or is it DVD-RW only? What I like about this is that I can swap out CF cards and use this to burn to DVD-R(hopefully) while I am recording on another CF card. Is there yet another similar type of gear out there to accomplish the same thing with the CF cards? Thanks

Varicam under/over cranked ?

I am working a spot this week being shot on varicam...using Zeiss primes, Nice! I did not realise that the varicam can be speed cranked while rolling, apparently the shutter is auto compensated. I assume this will have no effect on audio but I am a little confused.... too little sleep. Does anyone know if audio is an issue when the camera's frame rate is changed during a shot? Sound is only being recorded "in Camera" and during primary sound takes the frame rate is not being changed...just b roll. ThX Jeff Colon

Has anyone on here tried the Audio-Technica ATW-1821 - 1800 Series dual diversity TX / RX set up? Looking at it as a bang for the buck type thing it looks like a cheap way in to a sterio link / duel mono with some interesting design items like being able to turn off one reciever if your only running a single channel in as a link. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=460224&is=REG&addedTroughType=search I don't really want to see this turning in to a my Lectrosonics will whup your a$$ sort of thread or my audio Ltd are better type of thread just an honest yes I have used them these are my observations reply t…

Looking for thoughts on, and experiences with, the Pin Mic. I've been using COS-11's exclusively since they first became available, but the pin mic seems like a good solution for those occasional situations where you just can't keep a conventional lav either quiet or hidden. I'm curious to know who has used this mic in the field? What did you use it on? How did it perform? How did it sound? How did it blend with your other microphones? Was it reliable? How was it for wind noise, etc, etc, etc? Thanks, Darren

Hi all, Not sure if this is appropriate here, but B&H is running a nice deal on the PortaBrace equivelents to the Pelican cases. Buy one of the larger ones, you get a smaller one free. I just picked a set up and on first glance, they look pretty nice, and less than half the cost of Pelicans. (Normally I prefer not to purchase from B&H, but this was a pretty nice deal). Phil

I've noticed on the newer Sony and Panasonic 900's, that there is a SDI output on the back. The DOP on my last shoot was telling me that it can output Picture, Timecode and audio down the coax cable. Is anyone using this output to receive audio Timecode and picture ? If so, what kind of devices are there that can receive and output the TC, Audio and Pic ? IE, to feed my recorder with TC, My monitor with picture, and my mixer with audio return.

Marty Atias and ATS Communications of Silver Spring, MD, in association with the ITVA's Washington DC chapter & Interface Video, will present ITVA's first "First Thursday" meeting (held on the 2nd Thursday this month, January 11) on Direct To Edit Recorders for video & audio. I decided that the new Zaxcom wireless models that have recording capabilities might need their own topic thread (although much of what may now be discussed here has been discussed under "Certain reservations..." thread). I will start by taking the liberty to post Billy Sarokin's latest comments on their use (Billy has taken the time to post personal and detailed accounts on r.a.m.p.s. and he has had more real world experience than any of us). Here is a re-post of Billy's r.a.m.p.s. post: Hi All, I'm well into my 2nd film with the new Zaxcom radios here in snowy Northern New Mexico. A few days ago I received the last bit of hardware for the package. I'm not …

ZAX TRX990 and IFB900

I wonder with the IFB function of the TRX units, specifically the TRX990, if there will be some sort of push to talk function for the return audio boom to mixer. This would really make them "The Ultimate Wireless" and justify the package price! Glen? Eric Lamontagne

Being mainly a "sound for video" guy, I rarely have the need for a high quality external recorder. The other day I found myself on a 35mm film shoot for a potato chip commercial (actually, a "fake" commercial for corporate use only), hopefully it will show up on YouTube. The director asked me how I would like to record sound (DAT, Nagra etc) I suggested a few non-linear devices and we ended up getting a 702T because all of the DAT machines were out on rental (or otherwise unavailable) Luckily (but unnecessary), for my peace of mind...I had the machine the night before the shoot to get familiar with it. The pros at Trew Audio set up the machine for me before it wa…

I'm kind of in a bind. I dropped a bunch of money on my PD4, and it has served me well with minimal service needs. It seems as though it's just not practical anymore. They're only going for around $1500 on Ebay, which is only slightly more than an FR2 with TC. It seems a shame to sell it, but I don't know how much longer anyone will be willing to pay for it, how much longer there will be spare parts, or how much it will be worth after this year? Thoughts? Hello, As my post indicates my 70 bit the dust. It adds low level Rf noise to the signal output making it quite unusable. Besides the US branch of Sennheiser are there any tried and trustworthy places that you have dealt with that you would recomend? Or should I just forget about it, and call back Sennheiser. Bartek

I've been using 4 lectro 411 receivers with my 442 for the past couple of weeks. Strange thing happened today and yesterday. I noticed late in the day, i had to slowly keep turning up the gain on my mixer to get a decent level from the receivers. I kept turning them up until finaly i was maxed out. I went into the menu settings, and adjusted the output level, and as soon as i moved it up or down, the gain level snapped back to normal. Anyone else have this happen to them ? Since it only seems to happen later in the day, could it be a build up of temperature ? (i'm working a reality gig, so the bag stays on for 10-11 hours)

Camera car shots
by Guest Mick- 13 replies

I used to dread camera car shots, either the free run/hostess tray type or the towing/wire the car up versions. Granted in cold weather we get to sit up the front with the heater on and chat with the driver while the others have to brave the wind and rain etc etc., but iInever liked the hassle of the nagra/SQN/shoeps active cables rig that I used to great effect for years. It was always fraught with a myriad of difficulties which varied from job to job. Now I just load a battery into the Deva V, and voila, I have a four channel mixer/recorder/slate mic in one. I then place an antenna tree on a grip arm behind the window of the cab, wire the actors or plant the car dependi…
