Click on the photo titled "News Flash" here: http://www.trewaudio.com/gallery/. The arrangement uses the Remote Audio Drive Mounter system (http://www.trewaudio.com/remoteaudio/drivemounter/) and a CF-IDE array adapter. The adapter holds two Compact Flash cards, which the Deva sees as a single hard drive (two 32G cards yield 64G). They format, record, and playback just like an HDD. The flash card adapters are only about $20 each. Special thanks to Peter Kurland for some added inspiration. Glen Trew

Auto Mixer?

Hey All, I was recently given a polycom vortex ef2280. I'm just reading through the manual to see what it's capable of- I haven't had a chance yet to really play with it and see how it sounds. I'm wondering if anyone has used this unit for it's auto mixing abilities- in board room/conference/roundtable type settings. I get gigs like those occasionally where I rent a shure auto mixer, and I'm thinking this could probably work out pretty well for that. Any thoughts? Also, I'm not entirely sure that I will keep it, so if anyone has a burning need for one of these, I could be interested in a trade of some sort (some wireless mics perhaps...) Thanks, Tom

just wondering if anyone using the TS-c has had problems with it dropping out of sync (when jammed for 24h t.o.d.)... it seems to occur when (some) walkies tansmit within close proximity to the slate -- like a shielding issue... just curious.

Here in SF the remaining shard of Lectro Block 27 is already occupied by DTV stations. I wondered if this was true everywhere? Philip Perkins

I should add 2 wireless. However....I have no confidence that I understand the fast moving implications of the white space issue. So could I get some feed back from you. __Would you add to your wireless inventory if you are working in a city like Washington DC? __I know the sky isn't falling in on the short term but what kind of window might this equipment have? __Does this ruling open the door for existing broadcasters to spread out more than they might have before? Thanks Reid

Does anyone have first hand experience and/or a technical reference like a frequency response chart to determine how closely matched the MKH50 and 8050 are? I was thinking about adding a third MKH50 to the kit, but thought perhaps it'd make sense to have an 8050 with accessories like a right angle and a colette cable. Or should I go with the 8040 for a wider pattern for the low clearance applications, and how well will it match up with my MKH50s? Robert

I want to build a simple passive line level variable attenuator in a small box (can be unbalanced). Can anyone suggest what the best resistance for the potentiometer I should use for this "volume control"? It would be used to knock down the the output of a mixer to an amp/speaker setup.

So I've got a pretty small setup. It's mostly used in run & gun and ENG type situations. The point is that most of it fits into my petrol bag and a single pelican case. Over the last couple of years, however, I've beaten the hell out of the pick & pluck foam insert and it's starting to fall to pieces. I could pick up another insert, but I'm guessing the same thing will eventually happen to it. Does anybody know who I can talk to about designing and cutting a custom foam insert?

For those of you who do post production, here's a link to a DIY guide for a cheap, fast RAID array. http://www.freshdv.com/2008/10/blazing-fast-4tb-raid-under-2k.html I actually built an 8 GB *EDIT: Should be 8 TB* version (came in at about $1800) for a production company that I work with from time to time. The only caveat is that the cables linked to in the article had the wrong locking mechanism. I had to pick up the correct ones (the ones with thumb screws) here: http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?pid=19979&sid=25T2JLF568NK9MH3KGLAXHS13QWP815C Considering the fact that I've never set up a RAID array before, it was really pretty easy.

Hi everyone, I'm just recovering from a long and physicaly demanding gig this summer. here's a brief description. We were following 10 "voyageurs" as they recreated Alexander Mackenzies (first european to cross North America) journey by land across Western Canada (we went from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Bella Coola, British Columbia). The participants were wearing clothing and eating food authentic to the era and paddled most of the journey (except for long hiking sections) in a birch bark canoe. We tried to follow the route as accuratly as possible to the original one travelled by Mackenzie, and that meant we were in very isolated parts of the rockies. We could go 12 -13 d…

A question came up on another forum about inline low roll-off filters. I recalled that when I first started in the biz (early '70s) some older sound guys had these inline low roll-off filters that sort of looked like an old fashioned kitchen timer, I think they were continuously variable. Used w/ mono Nagras, they must have been mic level, and passed mic power DC maybe. I recall them being expensive and rare. Anyone remember these? Who made them? Philip Perkins

A bungalow office space just became available that's perfect for storing your gear. It's on the ground floor with no steps and has parking at the door. Just pull up and load or unload. You can set up inside for your own tinkering space away from home. There is a connecting door between two rooms and two separate entrances for each room if you want to seal one room off. Each room is over 20 feet long and over 8 feet wide each, including a bathroom. See unit at https://post.craigslist.org/manage/932588876/ju6yx You can rent one room for $495 or both for $895. It's located at 3489 #B&C Cahuenga Blvd W, near the 101 and 134 freeways (by Universal Studios and…

I had a comtek receiver (216) tossed in a toilet on my last show, i overheard someone in the production office saying that it was going to be put on ebay, since production "bought it". So look out, the serial number is: 250736 (no clip no pouch) the unit does not function properly!!

Hi All I seem to to be getting hits when I use my Sanken CS1 from crew and cast cell phones. (GSM). I ask for everyone to turn their phones off but silent mode seems about the best that can be mustered. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there an inline filter that I can use - or is it to do with the pyscial size of the CS1 and the wavelength of the GSM transmissions? No problems with the 416...

I got some Belden RG-8X mini coax from a friend and I'm having a devil of a time finding a compatible 50 Ohm BNC connector and corresponding crimp tool/die. The cable has "YR44192" and "0988" printed on it, but neither seems to correspond to any of the usual four digit cable codes in the Belden catalog. It's a gray PVC jacket. Diameter is only very slightly wider than Canare star quad. Is this cable stock familiar to anyone and can anyone help? Thanks! Regards, Noah Timan

Hi All , Having just registered this is my first post . I know the fusion has been discussed on this forum before so forgive if i cover old ground . I have a movie coming up and the fusion just may be the right tool for the job . My current set up is - cart based DV 824 , pd6 for overshoulder , sonosax st8d mixer , audio rack and lectro 411s etc . The fusion appeals because of the weight , power consumption , flexibility etc and this movie will have both cart work and overshoulder work . Questions - Is the screen readable in sunlight . Does the track naming on the meters appear on the track name in the avid . If for some reason you need to use the cf card in MARF for…
