I was talking to a friend of mine last night who just got his Nomad - and he had some operations questions that I thought that other users may have as well. So I figured that we needed a thread to address specific operations questions. And some shortcuts and tips that are not in the preliminary manual can be added - because at this point Nomad is evolving quicker than the manual. First my friend had an issue that Nomad wasn't booting up quickly. It turns out that he didn't have a formatted primary card installed in the unit. If there is no card Nomad will search for a card during boot up - Nomad will boot up but it will increase the boot time. He also had an issue …

Inspired by the "View from the office" thread, i am pretty curious as to what bags people haul around, and what gear is in it. So, this threads purpose is pretty simple. Show me your bag, give a little description of what it contains, and what type of gigs you normally do. My "bag": The thing is, i have no bag yet. No cart either. So what you see, is what i have, the rest is rented for every gig. Gear list: Sound Devices 442 Sennheiser G3 kit Røde Lavalier Røde NTG-3 AKG K-271

So Maxx is currently well into beta testing and so far it is passing with flying colors. Just a few more software tweaks and they will start shipping. My impressions so far: I like that Maxx is very compact and light weight. The screen brightness when turned to 11 is quite bright - Zaxcom has somehow made the screen even brighter than in Nomad - and the removal of the plastic overlay cuts down on glare which adds to the visibility. The menu structure is very similar to Nomad so anybody who is familiar with Nomad can jump right in with no learning curve. I like the added dedicated PFL buttons. As for the down side - they are all software related annoyances which will…

-EDITED by Zaxcom for corrections to specifications Maxx is a powerful new tool for your sound bag. It’s an audio mixer, RF transmitter, recorder, timecode reader/generator and visual timecode slate all in one small package. Audio Mixer Maxx has four full size XLR analog mic/line level inputs with 48 V Phantom power that incorporate the Zaxcom Nomad’s microphone preamps with NeverClip™ (patent pending). NeverClip™ prevents input clipping by using two A-D converters for each input channel providing enhanced dynamic range allowing an input to exceed 0 dB full scale by 20 dB. Neverclip provides an unmatched 137dB of dynamic range. The four input channels can be mixe…

Since Nomad is now shipping, and since all the other Nomad threads are several pages long - I think it is time to start a new thread. Perhaps in this thread users can post their thoughts, impressions, issues, likes and dislikes. So let me start with a post about the the flexibility of Nomad - this is taken from a shoot that I did yesterday. We were shooting three people, unscripted, sitting at a table of a restaurant interacting with each other. There were 4 cameras - one on sticks, two on dolly's and one on a jib. There was one close up camera on each of the three subjects and a master wide. Primary audio will be taken from the camera rolls, and back up tracks…

Being that there are almost 500 posts in the Non-conjecture thread, and that Nomad is that much closer to being delivered I think it is time to start a new one. I will start this thread by saying that I have been giving the Nomad that I’m beta testing a real work out. To update everyone on things the software is being tweaked and finalized and everything is coming together very nicely. I will be writing a full review soon, but right now I just to throw out my first impressions. The unit is sleek and light in weight and the build seems very solid and rugged. The pots have a nice feel to them – not to tight not to lose. The screen although not very large, like that in F…

I thought it might be nice to see a separate thread free of 8 pages of conjecture... I must say the Nomad looks interesting and the price point/s attractive. As well as it's upgrade-ability. My initial thoughts: 1) It would very tempting to me to buy one if the Nomad and my 788t were able to link together. 2) I wish the AA backup batteries were of some sort of rechargeable battery like the 788t that recharges when external power is connected 3) I can't wait to hear from NAB folks from BOTH camps (SoundDevices Users / Zaxcom Users) about the new device. 4) I wonder if Sound Devices will lower it's price on the 788t to be more competitive. Below is a…

Due to the responce on the JW sound group we have decided to make an optional fader attachment that will add 8 more rotary faders to the Nomad. The panel should allow for both fader control as well as Zaxnet control of wireless transmitter gain. We will announce price and delivery at a later time. Thanks to all for your feedback. Deity is launching a transciever with timecode and stereo recording. https://www.newsshooter.com/2020/04/22/deity-d4-duo-bp-trx-announced/ Crippled in US for obvious reasons, but could be an interesting utility tool for the rest of the world.

You guys seem to be my de facto sounding board... I am nearing completion of the first version of the FreqFinder app for iPhone and Android. It keeps track of all of your transmitter channels in use and then calculates the intermodulation products between them and tells you if any channels are being affected by intermodulation products. It is meant to be a replacement for the Lectrosonics intermod chart. It will also test all of a transmitter's options against the channels in use and provide a list of usable channels for when the need arrises to change frequencies. An add-on will provide a comparison against the fcc tv station database for users located in the…

I started this topic so we consolidate the post-announcement discussion and hopefully kill off the several threads simultaneously and annoyingly started by someone, ehem. Pretty compelling machine for me. I look forward to doing a hands-on comparison with the Sound Devices 633 and the Zaxcom Maxx. So first three questions: 1) What's the price? 2) Anyone have a used 633 for sale? :-) 3) What do you all think?

Zaxcom has introduced a new model in the Nomad lineup. - from Zaxcom website: Nomad Lite is a complete location sound recording system for video productions. Specifically designed for over the shoulder use, it provides all the functionality necessary to mix and record in a power efficient space-saving package. Nomad Lite has a complete set of DSP effects to give you the tools to not just mix and capture tracks but to provide a level of quality not possible with analog based mixing. 10 recorded tracks, NeverClip, Visual timecode slate and MARF ultra high reliability file system are some of the unique features that add to the value of Nomad Lite. A c…

ALL TEST WITH WHIP ANTENNAS SIZE BLOCK 22 AND FREQUENCIES SET BLOCK 25 I just received a zaxcom qrx200 RX. It seams a little heavier then qrx200. Buttons feel better. Fitted fine in my qrx holder. I installed and fired it on. It has the same menu as qrx100 with added block selection option. I set it up to block 25 and started a scan. Scan is a lot slower. Maybe a little faster then lectro but slower then qrx100q. It does not make any difference to me since I never scan. I just scroll through the freqs and find a clean one. The lack of heavy intermodulation with digital signals allows me to just select random clean frequencies. As far as sound I used AES and di…

Glenn, I am interested in adding/replacing some wireless to my kit (currently Lectro Venue - 4x21 & 2x22, along with one each 411a, 6xSM, 2x400, and a plug-on). I am interested in the TRX900AA for wireless boom due to its flexibility for recording and IFB reception and AA battery usage. Is there some sort of quality difference between the QRX100 mentioned above versus the RX900? I like the idea of buying one receiver (which also seems to be an IFB transmitter) and 2 transmitters with the IFB reception option. The QRX100 is described as for use with a video camera. Any reason it can't be on the cart or in a bag with external 12v power? It also appears to h…

Yes, as if we need yet another thread but given Nomad lite is essentially a 664 so far as inputs and track counts and most of the features. Thought we could do a rough comparison over which one might be for some people over another. I've attached some pictures for size comparisons. Zaxcom's Nomad Lite does have some nice features like NeverClip and their "soft knee compressor" vs. SD's hard limiter. Obviously the size is different. The weight of the Nomad is 3.8 pounds without batteries vs. 4 pounds 12 ounces on the 664. Sound Devices has a good history of reliable machines and easy to use menu structures. Nomad changes the game with the way the unit mixes (eg. 1 gai…

I'm not sure I should post this because there is so little I can say, but Glenn just stopped by with the first fully functional model of his new recorder. He just wanted to run it by me for any last minute suggestions. I only had one minor one. Mostly I was amazed at the little beast. So I ordered one. It's a game changer. For me it will mean complicated car rigs and remote rigs will need 2 pieces of gear (that can mate together as one) instead of the many I use now that have to be jury rigged together. Could have used it the other day! Sorry for the vagueness. As soon as I'm allowed I'll tell more. Billy Sarokin
