One of the Red Camera regulars recently posted a message about a Zacuto (DSLR camera accessory manufacturer) website columnist who wrote a piece that essentially says: "don't bother using expensive wireless microphones. Instead, get a cheap solid-state recorder like a Roland or Zoom recorder, put it on the actor, wire them up with a lav, roll the recorder, and let it go." Here's a sample: "The disadvantage of wireless is a huge deal to filmmakers. You have no control over possible interference, dropouts, and most wireless systems only carry the signal. They do not actually record it. The signal to noise ratio is noisier than a wired signal because the transmitte…

First off I want to thank Jeff for talking to me on the phone a few weeks ago. He was very helpful and provided me with some excellant prospectives on the industry today and some great stories. I posted this same Question on RAMPS but I know not all of you check there so here it is Thanks After reading the reviews and looking at the prices I think I am goinga Oktava MK-012. Can anyone give me some feedback regarding what you think of this microphone and where a good place to purchase one is. I found that www.sound-room.com sells them. Has anyone dealt with this company before? Thanks are there any other Oktava microphones I should consider buying for field use the p…

i'm ready to start putting together a basic kit. I know what the basics are and am going with the "buy once cry once" approach and willing to invest in quality instead of quantity within my budget and add as I go. With all the reading I have been doing on this site and calculating different equipment costs that I'm interested in it seems that going Nomad makes the most sense financially based on what you get for the price and upgradeability. I don't need a Nomad at this point and I might never need that many inputs and tracks but when you add up Sound Devices 302 or even a Mix Pre and a 702 for really not a lot more you can get into a Nomad 4. Is the Nomad a no br…

UK Lectro users 1 2 3 4 5

A question for recent adopters of the UK Lectro SR systems - how are you finding them? I'm on a reality/drama at the moment and frankly they've been nothing but trouble in terms of frequency issues and range. I'm running the 3 RX in an Octopak with Lectro adjustable dipoles, coupled with a 788. Despite having several UK frequency charts that (in theory) should give me 6 TXs or more playing happily together, I'm running into intermod and RF problems on an almost daily basis. Frequently a TX that appeared fine when set up will suddenly have an effective range of 20 feet! So it's re-tune, re-tune, re-tune. I find myself dreading simple walk and talks over even short ru…

I own a 744T but it's simply not enough tracks for me. I'm starting to do bigger, better projects, with more speaking roles. SO, my question is simple: I'd like people's opinions on whether I should purchase the Sound Devices 664 (with option of adding the CL-6), the Sound Devices 788T, (Not necessarily a mixer/recorder all in one, but still, a great digital recording tool) or a Zaxcom Nomad 10. Tossups: Buying a 664 = Buying a new bag. I have the Petrol Eargonizer Large. I thought this was as big as they get!? Buying a 664 or Nomad 10 means I need a whole new battery distribution system. Expensive right away, but I know it's worth it in the long run. …

I have been having some strange lock up behavior from my new SD633. I called tech support and we're working to figure it out. SD is an awesome company and I am sure they will deal with it effectively, but I want to put a call out to the other early adopters and see if anyone else has been having similar issues. What happens is this: On first boot-up to the date change dialog, the unit will occasionally lock up for about 60+ sec. After that it will proceed to the main tracks screen, but then it locks up there for good. In this condition it will not respond to any input, including a hard power off / batteries removed / no external power. It's weird - it just sits there…

Heyday world! I would like to address the Sound Devices users and Zoom F4/Zoom F8 users especially. I need a new recorder...and possibly a good mic or a matched pair. I thought of a Zoom F4, but also considering a SD recorder/mixer. I'm about to embark on a loooong journey (years, possibly forever), in a van, all by myself, to capture and explore the beauty of our planet. (I will start in Europe and slowly drive to Asia). I will actively look for the most quiet/remote places, far from cities or traffic. I will record sound and picture (one man band for now) and create atmospheric observational documentaries... with personality Sound will be essential. Mos…

Hey Everyone, Just want to hear your opinion on a few things: 1. What is the best position for the LED power status indicator on a NP battery? 2. If a DC power connector was available, what type and where would you like it (D-Tap or Hirose, left/right side, top, etc.)? Thanks! -Zack

IFB - ComTek vs Lectrosonics vs Zaxcom vs Sennheiser G3 IEM I'm considering moving from an older Lectrosonics IFB system to using instead Sennheiser EK 300 G3 IEM recievers. Here are my reasons: 1. I already own a number of SK 100 transmitters that I use for camera hops, etc. (I found that the EK 300 G3 is fully compatible IF you turn off the the pilot tone) 2. Why have a separate transmitter for IFB and camera hops? In "most" cases (for me) it will be the same feed. 3. The Lectro system I'm using is in the 700mhz band 4. The Lectro transmitter I have is the T1, which is big and draws too much current for bag use 5. The EK 300 uses AA batteies as…

Hello all, my question is this. Can a digital tc camera, let's pick Red Dragon, or Weapon, tc drift after the record button has been pushed and before the stop button is pushed? So if you are on 25fps, for easier math, then frame 1 gets stamped 0, is there any way for frame 3 to get stamped something other than 74? And yes, I have searched this. If you know of a link that answers this question, please post it. Thank you. If you need to increase the roll time to an hour for discussion purposes, that's fine.

Hey Guys! Just thought I'd write up my observations after a couple days of use of this small TC box. I absolutely love this product! After seeing Vincent post here a couple weeks ago I set my mind to getting one. The guys over at Tentacle sync lent me 2. When you first hold it, it feels almost like a toy. It is very light weight 27gm or 1 ounce. There are no screws or hardware on it. I was a bit nervous about this at first but after using it the last couple days I am convinced that they are sturdy enough for my purposes and the gigs I do.( mosty docu and corporate). The 3.5mm jack for in or output are not locking but are secure, I don't see how you wo…

I am planning on implementing a CAT 5 setup for my connection to the video assist department. This would simplify the cabling for what is already a very simple setup for me: typically I only need 2 video feeds to my monitors on the cart and 1 mono audio feed to the video assist cart. I have the proper baluns and all that but I don't know what people are using for the actual CAT 5 cable run. I like the idea of running 1 inexpensive CAT 5 cable but if that is always getting damaged what's the point. So the question: Who makes pre-built high quality CAT 5 (or better) cable in 50 to 100 foot lengths? I would expect that these cables should be able to behave just like high …

I have just been told my Nomad 8 is available and so I would like to check where we are at with some of the issues that people have had. 1) button battery (causing clock to lose time) 2) volume knob not working 3) faulty power switch 4) phantom hot plugging issue 5) inconsistent powering on 6) clock drift when powered off 7) Power cycle canceling mirroring 8] mirroring inconsistency () If I can get the serial number of my Nomad from the shop, would it be possible for Zaxcom to confirm if it is from a batch which suffered hardware issues?

Hello all: Yesterday I met with Brenda and Dave from K-Tek to pick up their new Bag designed for the Sound Devices 633 & the Zaxcom MAXX. Today I will be building the kit for the 633 and will be posting here. The Bag is certainly different from most other bags we all have used. It's very well made, and has excellent left & right side access to the 633s cable connections. Plenty of bottom space for batteries of all sizes including an external NP series if chosen. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will get to it as my time allows. Take care all, Don …
