Hi! I'm new to the group thanks for letting me in. I'm into filmmaking and sound for film, with particular interest lately in audio electronics. I'm looking for a shotgun to use with a preamplifier circuit I made myself running on 12-9V battery power, so I'm trying to skip phantom power. So far I've only used electrets with it, but discovering recently that some condenser mikes take lower voltages (P12, T-power). Quite interested currently to try on a T-powered 416, since I have a 416-P48U already and, even though off axis sounds spooky sometimes, it is very low noise. I really dislike hiss because I record details quite amplified. I'm thinking to se…

I am currently comparing Lemo cables with XLR cables for Schoeps microphones. I have no experience with Lemo and was surprised: The Lemo cables on CCM seem to me to be much more sensitive to handling noise (from touching etc.) than the CMC 1U with XLR cable. Is this due to the design or am I doing something wrong? Full disclosure: I'm not using them in a suspension: the CCM is in the SGC clip on a mini table stand, the CMC 1U in the XLR clip. Like an interview scenario for two people with mics placed on the table. The difference between XLR and Lemo is pretty drastic even when I just lightly touch the cable. Can you onl…

So I will order 2x TritonAudio - FetHead Phantom This will add 18 dB amplification/gain to my condenser mic and preamp And I will make a separate theme so as not to interfere another ‘Sennheiser Previews MKH 8030 figure-of-eight’ theme that is under way. I want to make several tests: 1. Using two Fetheads in the same chain (for shotgun Schoeps MiniCMIT GR) So I will get 18 dB + 18 dB = 36 dB Extra gain. I would like to use it to record from far away, for example in a zoo where I can't go very close to animals. 2. Using them for stereo microphones to get extra 18 dB (for my Shure VP88, two pcs are needed for this stereo microphone). Planned to re…

Hi. I have just learnt about this company making power generator out of rechargeable batteries (a BIG portable. battery with built in AC converter basically) specially tailored for film work. Overkill for sound equipment but what it means is no more damn noisy, stinky and polluting fuel generators on set! An that is great news for us all. It is a french company but I am sure their products will spread to the rest of the world soon if not already. As a matter of fact I heard about them from a gaffer in Kenya and the company is based in my home town Marseille 😅 worth spreading the word to our gaffer and producer friends: https://pessenergy.com/en/

I have Schoeps CMC mics that I use for mono and AB Spaced stereo recording. For wind protection, including outdoors in a light breeze, I have two Cinela OSIX 2/Léonard balls with fur. I am considering two Cosi or two Pianissimo for outdoor use. Right now, I can afford one or the other, not both. I would much appreciate the views of people who have used these windshields. The question is whether I should go from the Léo to the Cosi or go straight from the Léo to the Pianissimo. Put differently, is there so much overlap between the Léo and the Cosi, and the Cosi and the Pianissimo, that it would be sound to bypass the Cosi. I’m skeptical of the fact that the Cos…

Hi guys, I’m looking to upgrade my current audio setup and take it up a notch, and your help would be appreciated. Just as a bit of a context, I’m a shooting producer/director, or a one-man-band if you like, and mainly work on branded and documentary content and this setup I am looking into would be for those situations when I don’t have a sound recordist with me, when I do, they take care of all sound (obviously). I currently have the following setup: - Audio Technica AT4053B for indoor interview situations with boom on stand - Rode VideoMic Pro that goes on top of the camera - Rode Wireless Pro - and I use the Canon C70 as my main c…

So, apologies if this has been discussed recently, but I couldn't find it. I'm buying an SRc for a friend (no, really!) and need to know the skinny on what's going on at the FCC in terms of the future. What would you buy today? A1, B1 or 941? Committed to Lectro, only. Getting out of C1. The 941 maybe less traffic, but it's only one block! Discuss, please.

I’ve ordered a Panamic 2.3m/7.5’ boom pole that uses external cable. This lineman belt hook, which also comes in a gated version, looks like it might work for feeding and collecting a moderate amount of cable: Good idea or not? What’s your favorite tool for this?

Hi guys, I've been offered to buy a Sonosax Sx-S 8 from the 90s and it looks super clean. I'm curious what kind of maintenance or overhauls these particular mixers might need? I know perfectly well about Sonosax's great reputation, but since this mixer isn't offered cheap (almost 4000 usd) I want to know what I might be getting into. If you guys have any advice as to what I should check or look out for when I go see it, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

I have a perplexing problem with a recording I made last night on my Sound Devices 664. Today, I got a note from post that my audio file cut off before the end of the program. I recorded to both the CF and SD cards. I had given my SD to the DIT at the end of the night, so I checked that one first. The editor was correct. On the SD card the program stopped abruptly. When I compared it to the CF card, thankfully it had recorded the entire program (to the point where I actually cut). Comparing the cards, the SD mysteriously stopped recording 21 seconds before I pressed stop. I called Sound Devices, but they did not offer a satisfying explanation as to how this might …

I plan to purchase a boom pole in the 1.8m-2.7m range (6’-9’) that collapses to under 76cm (30”). I’ve looked at the carbon fibre offerings by Ambient, K-Tek, VdB and Panamic. Panamic offers 3 and 4 section poles in this range. Ambient offers only 5 sections, and K-Tek and VdB only offer 6. I realise that more sections translates into shorter collapsed length, but surely there’s a cost in structural stability. I’m pretty skeptical about a 6-foot, 6-section pole. Am I wrong to be?

I did a 2x mic stereo 743 car to car rig that worked great in practice but had some squirrelly reception issues to work around. I was able to rig a sharfin antenna to the 743 and transmission was awesome. Curious if anyone here might have run into this as it seems not to be as cut n dry as it should be. 2x 414 modules in my nova. I noticed when setting a 414 module to stereo mode in my nova i had to reboot and follow a weird sequence in order to get it to work and also for a secondary wireless to work in the same module. 414 no1 - rx1 n rx2 all set to zhd96 and all 4x ch receivers show green = good reception 414 no2 - rx3 set to stereo and rx4 set to…

I've been looking for a keyboard for the Nova that I could use in my sound bag since I had a Nomad, but I could never find a keyboard that was small enough. I found one ... but it was bluetooth-only, so I decided to add bluetooth to my Nova. It worked ... mostly. https://documentarysoundguy.ca/a-bluetooth-keyboard-for-the-zaxcom-nova/

Hi All, I'm using MKE1 lavs wired with pin 1 shield, pin 3 audio, and pins 4 and 2 tied together into SMQV transmitters. From time to time we are experiencing a sudden and inexplicably low clip point which makes the mic unusable - we call it the kazoo effect. Once the mic starts behaving this way, low audio levels sound totally normal but at a seemingly random and changing SPL threshold -- distortion on a wide band of frequencies will occur. This phenomenon occurs across many different MKE1 mics and SMQV transmitters. Sometimes the problem goes away and comes back, it has been difficult to troubleshoot or find consistent patterns so we don't know if it's a universal prob…

Did a recording last night of several people speaking at a celebration of life event. I used my zaxcom maxx recorder with freshly formatted media. This morning i went to download the card and could not get it to read on my computer. I tried the card back inside the machine and could no longer mount it. Tried several card readers, no luck. Panic ensued as this was an extremely important recording for our family to preserve. Come to find out - the card reader I had used had a pin in the middle of the top row that had bent and combined to the pin below forcing both pins into the bottom row hole of the card. I tried even a tiny strand of copper inserted into the hole and then…

I just came into a couple invisity flex receivers in the 195-202 band. What transmitters are available that can operate in this band that will provide the best range and performance? I'm aware of the T4 at 50mw. There's also an older phonak transmitter I know little about, and then there's the older lectro "M" series. Any others I should be aware of? Or any to avoid? I'm curious what will give me the best overall performance and what antennas people recommend that aren't too huge/impractical.

I’m not an expert on this topic, and I see a lot of props for Betso Bowties so this is in no way trying to undercut those who use them successfully. But can someone explain to me in layman the difference? I’m sure there are high level variations, but the details as it would apply to real life performance. If the bowties are in essense multiple omni dipoles in a compact configuration how would that differ greatly from a 1/2 wave wideband whip antenna? Both are omni, both can cover our usable frequencies, etc. Any feedback from experts appreciated?

My icon platform has died and I’m looking for a replacement. I remember someone talking about the V1 pro and it might be useable as a controller in the near future….. I can’t find the thread now and was wondering if it was a possibility or whether those plans were dead… what else is there?…. The platform fits perfectly in my rastorder cart ….. The waves fit will fit within the frame by 5 mil After last years strikes i don’t have funds for a cl16 . Any other contenders?

Hello all, as some of you might know, Zoom released a new updated version of ZoomH6. Im gonna cut this short, which one should i prefer buying for my filmmaking and sound recording journey? Would the 400 dollar difference really makes a difference? F6 can record on 32 bit- 192 kHz. and new ZOOM H6 Essential can do 32 bit- 96kHZ And i ASSUME the preamps of the F6 is still be quiter and cleaner in compare to be 2024 released ZoomH6 Essential? Or not? 🎶❔ So i would get a better sound with my shotgun microphones on set with F6? I wish i had a chance to try them both with my kit, but it is almost impossible to do that here right now. …
