I've seen a few people here mention that they use a Schoeps MK 41 for exteriors as well as interiors. I have a couple of questions about that: 1. What do you use for wind protection? 2. Do you only use the Schoeps for *quiet* exterior locations, or do you use it everywhere?

So I have a TRX900AA with the STA150 + RX900S that I bought as a camera hop, but my current project required a lot of wires, so I have been using the TRX900+RX900 as an extra lav. It's the first time I used a Zaxcom bodypack on an actor actually. Every so often I get noise that sounds like the audio from an Atari 2600 video game, and very noticeable. I'm trying to figure out if it is a range issue or an interference issue. I have had issues where the range is not very far at all, and that's why I am wondering if it is something else. I have also had issues where the camera is not between me an the actor, so I am not just guessing it is that. The scenes where I am running …

I noticed that the return signal has more low frequencies than the HP master. Even when I heard the L or R, etc. I tried with some recording devices and all same result. I suspect that my master HP has Some low cut. I would be happy if someone has an answer. (Of course, the Master and return have the same level) I use Sony MDR 7506. Does anyone have the same problem?

As the topic suggests, which miniature microphone has the lowest self-noise? It would have to be compatible with a wireless transmitter with low voltage bias current (Zaxcom compatible). The application is for what can best be described as nature recordings, but not for a production environment, more for measurement and later scientific analysis. Extended frequency response beyond traditional vocal range is recommended. Some weatherproof abilities would be nice, although the mics will generally be well sheltered. Absolute sound quality or flat frequency response is not emphasized here, as all mics would be the same, in same installations, and readings would be ca…

Wow, 184mhz switching bandwith! That would help with finding clear frequencies, yes? Although they don't seem to have a portable receiver that has the same ability.

Difficult to get RF cable in and out. Difficult to know when the BNC is seated. Hard to grasp to twist out. I could use a leatherman, but that seems like overkill. What trick am I missing? -- Jan

Hey Folks. So I'm trying to convince the boss that we need some new shiny cables for our audio pack. The analogy I like to tell him is using bad cables is like eating a steak with a plastic fork. He insists our cables are fine, but I know better... I need a better argument (and brands) for new cables. JW... you're my only hope.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if you guys have come up with any elegant/economical solutions to mounting a pair of Shark Fins and a Comtek Mini-Mite via a riser (Boompole/ Painter Pole) on a PSC Style Sound Cart. Thanks! -Chris

Anybody uses the Ambient ALL601 to stamp a TC on Canon D50 (or same) cameras ? Is it a good choice? Any suggestion for a masterclock unit that would be as small as can be (bag use) ? Glenn (Zaxcom) , any hint about a possible unit (or IFB100 implementation maybe) that would eventually be released to do the job ? That would be nice to use, along with the ERX1TCD on cam (very small factor)...

I'm stopping in Hong Kong at the end of the month, just wondering if anyone knows of some good stores that deal in professional audio and broadcast type gear?

I again came across this article containing a quick discussion on 75 ohm vs. 50 ohm cable. It seems to find that based on the specs, 75 ohm cable might come out ahead in the loss per 100' comparison. Wolf? http://www.audiosystemsgroup.com/Which_Coax_for_Wireless_Mics.pdf

Howdy. I lav'd a coach the other day in 20 mph winds. I put a hairy fuzz ball on a tiny cage over a sanken cos2 (I think it was a cos2), and clipped it onto his sweatshirt collar on the downwind side - not so good. I then took a tram and taped it with mole-skin against the inside of his sweatshirt at sternum level, mic facing out - not much better. Anybody have any tips for lav'ing on windy days on open fields when talent is wearing a sweatshirt over a polo shirt? Thanks! John

Hi. I was recording outdoors, on a soccer field. I was on the opposite side of the field from the coach, who was lav'd with a Lectro um400 to a ucr401. The pilot indicator (triangle below the P on the lcd) flipped, and I got drop-out. In the manual, it says the indicator flips due to phase shift - Why does it phase shift (was I probably too far away?), and was that phase shift most likely the cause of the drop out? Thanks. John

Hi - I'm journalist who also researches material about sound issues for documentary filmmakers (Europe and NAmerica); and also present for a general audience, via public radio. Who has field experience with the SuperCMIT ? The mic has been out for four months. Also, is there anything new in the technology of the mic, that is substantially different from other mics? Schoeps says it's the only fully digital shotgun mic on the market now that can meet professional standards (emphasis on professional). If 'fully digital', how does it sense the sound? I heard the mic in a demo, in a busy convention-type environment. It's very impressive for someone trying …

This was the 2nd time it happened, and why I'm posting: to share the information and collect ideas for prevention. TRX900 in both cases was mounted menu/increment/decrement keys-in toward the actor's body, on the waist/belt. During a late take, the levels on the TRX were found to be waaaay high. Unusable. Later inspection found TRX levels in the high 40's. The first time this happened, I suspected the actor had taken the TRX off during a break and played with it. I now believe that the menu and increment buttons were inadvertently pushed simultaneously by the actors' bodies, and the gain subsequently pushed. In the recent event, the gain was pushed up to 47 and l…

I've been trying for months to get hold of anyone at Loon. At first they wouldn't return emails or calls from either myself or Gotham Sound (imagine ignoring one of your own retailers!), then their number went straight to a recording saying that the mobile customer was not available. Now, as of yesterday, the telephone number on their website is out of order. All of this followed some rather testy customer service served with a helping of attitude way back when I was able to reach them at all. A.

Dear UK based JWSoundies, I am planning on buying a zax camera hop and was wondering what block has worked for others in the UK? My other wireless is on CH38, so I guess that, in order to be 2 or more blocks away from them, I'd have to be in the 'not strictly legal' part of the spectrum? What's working for you?

Hey Folks! So I'm looking for a little shed light on my question of "What is the difference between Line-Out and Tape-Out? Why are they there? What do they do? In what instance should I use which?" Many questions, so little time. Well, no, that's not true. Also, my not being a 25-year pro, I would totally appreciate a "simple" version of this no-doubt lengthy answer. Gracias, Danka, and Thank You Alex C

Hi all, Curious if anyone's got a line on a good piece of software (preferably Mac) that they like for managing inventory (eg noting and keeping track of what gear goes out on which job, and what's in which case, etc). I've been muddling through for a long time with notes and lists and imagine that someone has probably written some software that makes this process far more efficient. Thanks for any suggestions!

Im entertaining the idea of getting a Schoeps CMIT. I already have an MKH50 that I love for indoor use, and wanted to ask if the CMIT would be a good compliment. They probably don't mix as well as two Schoeps mics, and they will probably mix fine if I ever have to use them on the same shoot, but I just wanted to check and see if anyone has had any experience or thoughts on the two mics together.

Sonic Studios surround mics and gear-WOW

If nobody has taken the time to either check out or use the very nice surround mics from this company, you really should give them a try... At least, give them a look!!!! http://www.sonicstudios.com/ I have owned a headset version for years, the DSM 6 model and love everything about them... They STILL work very well after a pretty long time... I especially like the design of being able to simply wear them on your head, with no handling noise what so ever, which provides a really nice uncolored surround image in a very tiny package... Many options of these mics as well as mounting options and connectivity options are offered. The company is small in size …

Hi all, First post on the board. I am currently struggling with my two sets of G3 transmitter/receivers in terms of range. I find that I am getting only approximately 15-20 feet of range from the talent before experiencing major static noise and rips. I am getting this around corners at an even shorter distance. One of my Tx/Rx sets is brand new, another set about one year old. One set is on the 566-608 range, one is 516-558, both experience the same problem to different degrees. I asked Sennheiser, and both ranges are acceptable for where I am shooting in India, they said I should be getting 50 meters where I am. I really don't think it is geograph…
