hey gang, i'm asking this for a friend of mine who has a strange need: to make one long 24 hour recording. i told him i thought he'd probably have to do it with two machines and "piggyback" the recordings - maybe 1 hour takes that overlap by 20 seconds or so, and then edit them together. i thought i'd ask though if anyone thinks there's a machine out there that can make such a long recording. AFAIK there's no picture involved in this project - just an audio recording. thanks, -greg-

Hi all, I did a search for this and couldn't find what I was looking for. If you know of a thread that discussed this already, please point me to it. Don't want to add clutter. Here is my query : how do you load up and cart Lav's to the set and bring back? For my condensers like Schoeps and Sennheiser, I put them in Pelican cases with Silica boxes. I have separate Pelicans with cables, adapters, accessories, Rycotes, etc., everything I would need for an FX collection session in the field. For Lavs, I have a set of DPA's (that come in their own nice box), a MKE2 (which comes in a not-so-nice box) and will soon pickup a Sanken COS-11. But I am not sure how best …

I've been using a Sound Devices 552 for about a month now and have been very pleased. Friday I tried connecting a Sennheiser EW G3 to the timecode output of a Panasonic HDX900. When I looked at the "meter" on the G3 it showed NO signal what so ever. I then connected a mic to the G3 transmitter and it clearly read the audio signal just fine. I continued during the day to try to get this "wireless timecode hop" to my 552 to work, but never succeeded. I have been able to get to work with other cameras just fine. I've double checked my cables, and they're good. Remember, I was getting NO signal at all into the G3. I suggested to the owner/cameraman that maybe s…

I have done a little bit of research on this topic but am also fairly new and just getting into it, so any advice would greatly be appreciated. I mostly to ENG/bag work and I recently got my hands on a new 552 and was interested in the timecode aspect of it. Since it only stamps timecode and doesn't generate it, I believe the only way to have continuous recordings with the correct timecode for multiple recordings would be to carry something along like a lockit box from Ambient in my bag that I have jammed at the beginning of the day. I looked into these and they run pretty expensive. Are there other option for being able to have my recordings timecode stamped? It…

I have a B3 hardwired to XLR (B3P4FF05B), I have recently purchase a Sennheiser G2 wireless system & wanted to make an adapter for the 3.5 mm locking plug. I thought I could add a plug to the end of the B3 wire & a jack to the end of the XLR power supply body... This way I could use it both wired & wireless. Anybody done anything like this? I know I can contact Countryman, but I thought I'd ask here first. I did check on the Countryman site, and the wiring diagram for the 3.5 mm plug is the same as the XLR preamp body- so I figure this should work. (Note: I cross-posted this on the DVXUser site, I hope that's okay!). John

Has anyone tried going direct into the iPhone? I recall a 1/8" plug with 4 connectors (I would assume Ground, L, R, mic). Would be great for those playback into the phone situations...

Hello, I'm going to be building my personal library of SFX and am looking for some guidance in terms of which gear to buy. I've been considering a stereo shotgun: 191 (sensitive?, no bottom?), CSS-5(noisy?) and 418S (noisy?) or MS(more versatile) Senn or Schoeps : MKH 30/40 or Collette or CCM I'm really want a quiet rig as it will be for capturing subtle BG's as well as hard effects( car bys etc) *I've read thru the posts about MS and am a little concerned about the dolby encoding issue. Does this only occur if the the tracks are delivered MS to the stage or can it happen even if you've committed them to L R ? Thanks in advance, Best, John

For transcription purposes: I've had several of my clients asking for MP3's time code to closely match the camera(s) time code for easier notes. I don't need a perfect synch, just something I can manually set within seconds of the tape's TC. Any ideas? Much thanks.

On my past 2 jobs I've had some issues with my new 788T. 1) Tracks unarming themselves although there are inputs routed to them and the associated front panel control is on. 2) Although both CF and HDD lights are green while recorder is stopped, when record is engaged I am occasionally getting warning beeps and record pending message (only 4 tracks powered up at 24/48 and drive formatted at start of 2 day commercial shoot) Has anyone else experienced these problems> I have contacted SD about the issues and have also loaded 2.0 Firmware, cant replicate the problems on the bench however. I am in the process of ordering the TRX992 wireless boom link. As far as I know there aren't any of these units in South Africa yet. This is my question: Which receiver should I use with this system? I ordered the RX900M and was advised by the supplier that the RX900S is the preferred receiver - apparently for a comms link to the boom op. I was under the impression that with a stereo receiver you would lose the diversity capabilities and end up with the signal going to only either left or right. I feel that the RX 900M will be more flexible in that one would also be able to use it with a transmitter on an artist when not requiring a wireless boom. What I need to hear…

I've been using these velour Pearstone Deluxe Earpads on my MDR-7506 for about a week, and I love them. Here's a link to the review that I wrote: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/find/newsLetter/Deluxe-Earpads.jsp They're so much more comfortable that the stock earpads, I figured the jwsound people should know about them. I haven't worked on a location job with them yet, but I'm confident they will help make the day go by more smoothly. It's like getting a brand new (and different) set of headphones for $20. Worth a try...

While the Cantar is a wonderful recorder, I've had some difficulty in the past with timely disk burning. By and large the disk burning proceeds well and the disks produced are almost always readable by post without difficulty. However, sometimes the burn process is too slow and gets me into trouble. If the takes are long, or multiple microphones and tracks need to be used, the burn process can require so much time that the camera crew has the next shot ready before the idle copy can be completed. This is particularly acute if one is also performing a Poly-Rotate function. When all these factors combine, one cannot complete the copy process on an as-you-go basis and one…

I have a 360 Systems Short/Cut that I picked up for $100. It works, apparently, but has a noisy drive. 360 Systems says they do not take in units that are more than 7 years old for repairs. I am hoping perhaps that someone here might have experience with replacing the internal drive on one of these units, or might have some tips on replacing the SCSI drive with a rebuilt or using a SCSI to IDE adapter. It might be fun to tear one of these apart, so if anyone wants to geek out in my garage let me know. Robert

Hi, Just got this mic in the mail today.. It seems unusually "touchy".. Higher handling noise than I remember (I've rented it in the past), and has an almost microphonic response to wiggling around in the shockmount (rycote invision). If I tap on the mic body, the xlr shell, or the cloth cable going in I get a loud, glassy, "tink-tink-tink".. With my schoeps and 416 this test results in more of a "thud-thud-thud". Is it possible I got a out-of-whack CS-3e? As it stands I'm not sure I can swing this thing even in an invision and not have handling noise problems.. Also the self-noise level is higher than what I remember with this mic.. seems to have significan…

Earlier this week I received the first three Zaxcom ERX Receivers hot off the presses. They are interesting little units that work with the ifb transmitter. They receive high quality audio from the ifb (which can be program feed, talk back, cueing audio, etc), they receive and generate time code and can output either code or audio (or both) and they also can display the scene and take data that is entered on a Zaxcom recorder. First impressions are that the audio quality is excellent. Much better than my Comteks but the range isn't as good. It easily covered a large stage with many sets and large metal obstructions (such as air conditioning units)…

I did a simple internal Corporate video earlier this week With my 442 Mixer hardwired into a very old DVX100a using my 416 Boom to both channels on camera. The camera was provided by the company we were doing the video for. I get a call from the company saying that every 5-6 minutes they is some sort of digital noise then the audio cuts out for a few second and then everything is fine. This happened on all 3 mini dv tapes we shot. I explained to the client that i was listening via the camera return, the camera operator was listing via headphones and the producer was listening via a IFB. The client then asked me if i did a playback check and i said that isn't part of my n…

Hey guys, I love my Cooper 106+1, but there is one thing that annoys me about it. Unlike the 208, the private line toggle is a momentary switch, not a button. The switch, unlike the other switches around it, needs to be pressed up instead of down. This is very awkward if you need to get to the PL quickly while mixing a take. It's also very easy (sad to say I've done it) to hit the oscillator at a very bad time if you're not careful. I was wondering if anyone here has ever modified their 106 with a button instead of a switch and if you had any advice for someone wanting to do that. I've measured the PL button mounting hole on a 208 and the mounting hole for …

Does anyone have any tips for mounting an HS2 to the talents foreheads? A friend was talking about some sort of head band that he had used in the past. Ideally I want to mount the mic to the forehead rather than round the side of the face. Cheers, Nick

I have found an odd thing with a borrowed Hawks Wood regulated NP1 shoe. I useually use an unregulated hot shoe with only the flying lead output, but I have radios and a tx to power so I need more hirose 4 outputs. When I run the SQN mixer off it via an hr4 - hr4 lead (not the xl4 flying lead (i can't try that with my set up unless I buy it and convert it to hirose4), and the two audio 2040's via the duel audio powering/output lead something odd occurs. Also occurs with a separate power suppy to SQN. The radio receiver set to 860.400 picks up a lot of break-through from the radio tx on 858.200 if that second radio is within 6-8 feet approx and only whilst the f…
