Hello from Seattle. This will be my first post, although I have benefited quite a bit from the great info off jw already. I'm fairly new to the location sound game, but have quite a bit of experience as a post engineer. My current rig is bag based with the following gear... Sound Devices 788T/CL8 2 Lectro 411 kits with Sanken COS 11s Sennheiser 416 (which we also use heavily in the studio) NP1 BDS for power No IFB system yet! I primarely do film and commercial work at the moment, but would love to get into ENG/Reality projects in the future. Just wondering what opinions you guys/girls have on the sound quality/range differences between these two systems. The g…

Hi all. This would be my first real post on the site, and I'm going to try and use it to ask a few realtive questions and hopefully not many silly ones. I live and work in Cape Town ( South Africa ). I did 3 years at Collage, 7 years as a Boomswinger and 2 years recording. Out of the spectra of sound possiblities there are to offer and from what I have experieced to date I have chosen to prusue recording sound for film as my core love for being a Sound Engineer. during the past years I have invested in equipment that was as versitile as I needed to be. The ENG approach basically was my start. I now realise that I need to "settle" into a workflow of a different …

I think this is a must have for my cart... Hackintosh!!

A friend turned me on to this, and upon my return to the mother ship I am on board... It looks like a great addition to your cart or travel bag.... Inexpensive, functional, and a worthwhile addition to your life. When you add in the extended battery life, and the portability for you "small cart" guys, it seems like a slam dunk... Heck, if nothing else, seems like fun.... Sometimes I don't care to lug about my Macbook pro... Here is the "how to" link, the actual Dell link, so you may view it, is below... enjoy.. http://gizmodo.com/5389166/how-to-hackintosh-a-dell-mini-10v-into-the-ultimate-snow-leopard-netbook To look at this little gem..... http://www.de…

Replacing SLA batteries in my pelican cases. Battery prices are a competitive market. Who is the cheapest? Are there some resellers that i should be wary of? Best prices so far that i've found were from batterymart.com Anybody here have a favorite source? Thanks, john.

It seems, from my limited experience, that none of the video cameras out there will hold timecode sync with another camera or recorder. It appears the more "expensive cameras" may have better generators, but even those seem to drift a few seconds after an hour or so. I did a shoot recently with some Sony EX3's, and they seemed to drift about 10 seconds within about 10 minutes! So, are there ANY cameras out there that are "rock solid", or are SB-3 and lockit boxes (or wire or wireless TC feed) always a must? Tom

Hi all, I try to contact Ray at Proctor and Bray but my e-mails are bounced. I bought many batteries and chargers time ago from them and I'm looking to buy more. Are they still in the bussiness? I'm looking for 4 to 6 hours charge time chargers for 65W NP-1s. Or 70W batteries with 6h charge time chargers. One option are the Globalmediapro NP-1s and chargers but not shure if their batteries are compatible with my current P&B chargers. Another option would be Hawkwoods NP-1s (not their chargers, since are slower and pricier) but, would they be compatible with the P&B chargers and Globalmediapro chargers? Options? (I'm in Europe) I try to stay a…

I had a couple of customers in my shop the other day. They started a rather heated discussion about which channel the boom microphone should be plugged into. One guy insisted the 1st channel (left most fader) the other guy insisted the last channel (right most fader). They both had valid points and both thought the other one was wrong. It's a quiet week so I thought I would ask all of you with time on your hands which channel you use and why? Thanks Ron Meyer PSC

Please be gentle. My primary boom/shotgun is a 416. I wanted to look into adding a side microphone for M-S recording of rooms, sound effects, and (not with the 416) some music. I'm looking at a lot of angry birds, but can really only have 1 stone for now. The plan would be to get an MKH40 or 50 later on down the road. I had also looked at the Ambient Emesser but there are a few comments/notes about self noise. Would I have a useable M-S setup with the MKH30? Should I be looking elsewhere/putting my head in the sand? Thanks!

It would seem to me that in order to use the SD552 successfully with timecode, it would be necessary to input TC into the 552 either using a hardwire, wireless, or something like the Denecke SB-3. THEN, because the 552 will only "stamp" the first frame of the timecode as the file name (Is that right? Correct me if I'm wrong.) and does NOT lay down continuous timecode, would it not be necessary (if shooting video) for the CAMERA to roll first and THEN the 552 so that there exists the one common "marked" frame of TC appearing on both the 552 and the camera? I realise there are other factors to consider, but regarding having the camera roll first, would this not be ess…

Since the introduction of the SD552 I have been wondering if Sound Devices might make an SD302 with an internal 2-track recorder. It would make for a very compact and light bag for those times when you only need a boom or boom and one or two wireless to one camera. Perhaps an SD702 might serve the same purpose--I don't know as I have never used one. Just searching for the ingredients for a very lightweight Eng bag. Any thoughts? Bob

Hi all, Anyone tested the G3 system for monitoring? Receiver is speced as line out with 7 steps of level, anyone tried headphones with it? BTOH, anyone tested an SK2000 tx with a G3 receiver? I read the SK2000 is compatible with the 500-G2, so it may work with the G3... I ask because the US version of the SK2000 can be set up to 100mW and I'd like that for my IFBs. Best, Fernando

Zaxcom has loaned a 992 boom system to the 695 Quarterly Magazine for evaluation. This is the transmitter specifically made for booming that incorporates phantom supply, IFB receiver and other features. Starting this week, and continuing into the beginning of the new year, we plan to do some critical listening and conduct controlled tests for range, performance and ease of use. Testing will be done at the Local and some nearby locations. Results will be published in an article in the 695 Quarterly. Obviously we are most interested in participation by members of Local 695 but, as time and space permits, are happy to welcome interested parties. (For those not in the LA …

I'm seriously thinking about getting a Lectro SR receiver and a Remote Audio battery distribution system for my bag. I just have a few questions for before I take the plunge... 1) Some time ago I recall reading about a noise issue when I was researching battery distribution systems on RAMPS. There was a person saying that they only used an NP1 to power their two 400 series receivers, because if they also distributed power to their mixer they would get noise. Is this a common issue, or an isolated one? 2) As far as batteries & chargers go, I'm thinking of getting two IDX NP-L7S: http://www.idxtek.com/products/np_b.html and an IDX JL-2Plus charger: http://www…

Neumann is about to introduce a new digital shotgun mic the KMR 81D. One interesting possibility is the build in effect of a compressor/limiter within the mic! Especially for ENG/reporter-handheld apps it might be useful. http://www.neumann.com/?id=news_current&lang=en http://www.mio.co.za/article/neumann-unveils-the-first-digital-shotgun-mic-2009-10-06

"The Fibersound Fiber Optic Microphone provides interference free communication in electrically noisy environments. The microphone uses a patented optical system that converts acoustic signals directly to a modulated light intensity signal. Since no electrical signals generated in the microphone or the fiber optic cables the fiber optic microphone provides secure and interference free communication in chemically or electrically hazardous conditions. Available with completely non-metallic construction to permit use in areas of high magnetic fields such as the bore of an MRI." http://www.fibersound.com/fiberopticmicrophone.html?gclid=COOD2JDL5J4CFRafnAodaQPAJQ

Hi. I am working with good friend to record location dialog of a short film. He is very talented director and has brought in real actors into this project. He has already had a film featured in film festival and this project is to take things to the next level. I have experience with audio/music but this will be my first time doing production recording. I enlisted myself as I want to make sure that my friends film has clean pro sounding dialog. Of course, our budget on this one is practically zero. Well 80% of dialog is interiors that we will not have time to prepare acoustics of room and I now have realized that the MKH 50 would be what I need. Problem is that I can n…

Has anyone found a work-around to interface a Cooper 208 v2 remote roll switch with a SD 744 via the CL1? With a correctly wired cable from the Cooper and a correctly wired and programmed CL1 the 744 will only go into record when the Cooper switch is in the "OFF" position, and then stop when the Cooper switch is in the "ROLL" position. This occurs regardless of which position the CL1 toggle is in. I understand that the Cooper switch contact is open when in "ROLL", and was intended to interface with the Nagra, though I'm not clear as to why it works correctly with the Fostex and HHB machines. Sound Devices states that it will not work without rewiring the Cooper out…

As many of you know, my knowledge and understanding of RF is sketchy at best, so I need some guidance regarding my new 2.4 Ghz (WiFi) antenna. This antenna, a 10dbi directional 2.4 Ghz antenna, is to be used with the Zaxcom IFB system. It would fit best, physically and functionally, positioned between the 2 Zaxcom log periodic receiving antennas I now use for the wireless. The wireless I use are in essentially Block 21 but the antennas, of course, are broadband 400 to 800. Question is, what is the likelihood that the 2.4 Ghz transmission is going to interact with the 520 - 580 mhz wireless receivers? I am going to set it up this way and do some real world testing, but …
