I don't know anything about these decks so I'm asking the group. A friend of mine just did a gig with a borrowed Deva II, and she is having a strange thing happen. She has burned a number of 4GB partitions onto 4.7GB DVD-RAM discs. Each one took hours, but when she takes a look at each disc it appears only 2GB was actually burned, and the rest of the files were just left off the discs. Anyone have any thing like this happen to them? Any ideas how she can get a full 4GB partition onto a DVD-RAM? Dan Izen

I'm doing a very brief field test of the new Lectrosonics D-4 Digital Wireless system. Thanks to Robert Kennedy of Coffey Sound for the opportunity. It's very simple to operate and is esentialy setup to be either 4 discrete channels or as 2 stereo pairs as a camera hop. (I've tried and tried to put the photos inline but the link to the flikr site will not compute?) For my initial test I sent 4 channels of - 20dbm tone, AES audio to the transmitter from my Yamaha 01V96. The receiver was outputting the same tone to my Deva 5. The receiver was set to output the signal digitally, but I kept hearing hash every 15 seconds or so and sounded like a clocking issue - I will c…

After a lengthy period of development, brackets to secure Sound Devices 788 recorders are now available from Chinhda. They incorporate many of the suggestions and wishes of people on this site. The bracket is very light - so light that it could be left on the recorder while in use in a bag. (Visit the site to follow up on the thinking on that.) The recorder slides into the frame and is securely latched in place by simply moving a spring-loaded retaining piece. The process is quick and easy; it can even be done with one hand. All buttons, switches, battery mounts, and cable connections are open and accessible. There is also good access to the CF card slot. The …

I know the Petrol PSDMB-302 bag is popular with 302 owners, and I'm curious which different portable recorders different people are managing to fit into the bag. Currently I have a 302 in there with two Lectro 100 series receivers. No battery distribution. I bought an Edirol R-09HR to use in the bag, but it's not behaving properly. It's looking like it may have to be returned, so I'm trying to nail down the next best option. This is the only bag I have for now, so it needs to fit in there. Any information is appreciated.... PS - Jason Porter, if you're reading this (which you obviously are ), it's a bummer but my R-09HR is totally acting like a lemon fresh out of …

Hello Everybody, I am shooting an "up close and personal" doc right now with an HPX170. Mic on top goes to CH1, Wireless Lav goes to CH2. Most the content takes place in doors, people's apartments or music studios. I have an MKH60, which is kinda large to put on top of the camera with the dead cat and all, but I have been doing that. My other complaint is that it's too directional. I would like to pickup more of what's going on in the room, rather than what I am pointing at. Also, sometimes I can hear myself breath from behind the camera especially when my eye is in the eye piece. I have the low cut enabled when in use, too. I also have access to a scheops CMC…

Hey Everyone, It has begun to get cold in Tennessee and my mind has turned to winter gear. I thought it might be an interesting discussion to see how everyone dealt with outdoor shoots in winter by discussing good and bad gloves, coats, etc. that they have found throughout the years. For instance, I have been trying, without success, to find a good pair of super-warm gloves that still give me enough dexterity to turn knobs on my 442. REI makes some great socks with fleece lining that have served me well. I have heard that Carhart bib pants are amazing (this is what the road crews use), and they are a sort of denim material, so it doesn't have the "swishin…

Hi, To those of you who have used Audio Developments mixers, how would you describe the sound characteristics of the preamps that Audio Developments use? I'm wondering if they would be considered warm, bright, or transparent sounding? The reason I ask is because I will be recording some live music with an Audio Developments mixer and I won't have a chance to use it before the job. The sound of the preamps will influence which mics I will use for the live music recording. Thanks in advance, John

I just got word that all the dialog we were going to record tomorrow is being replaced by VO, which we'll record the talent reading off a prompter. I'll mount my 416 over the talent, but I was thinking of also using a large diaphragm condenser. I don't have one, but thought it'd be a handy addition to my kit, if the price was right. I'll have time in the morning to rent or buy, if need be (in NYC). Do you have any suggestions? I have seen good prices on the Rode NT1-A and the AKG 220 Perception mics, but most of the reviews I have seen are from musicians and the occasional VO guy. I would rather rent than go into this blindly with little time to properly figure …

Hey guys, soon I'm going to be traveling to europe with my sound equipment, its one case, pelican 1620 case and the weight is within regulations, also with tsa approved locks. My question is would it be fine to check it in with all my other luggage? Or is there any other recomendations, its a private travel, not on a company budget. I just want it to be safe, or if there is anything special I have to do to make sure its fine. I know already about the batteries, to take the out. Thanks guys.

Is there any advantage to using different types of antennas for diversity radio mic systems? For instance, a log to A and a dipole to B or some other combination (a yagi, ground plane, whip etc. I've seen that some mixers use a shark fin/SNA600 combination. Bob

I have an Ambient 301 Radio slate which has a older 'Blackbox' series Tx. The Rx is built into the inside of the timecode slate. I recently purchased another stand alone Ambient 'Blackbox' series Timecode RX. I thought a second RX might be handy for feeding timecode into cameras or attaching to the back of a second timecode slate if needed. Whilst jamming time of day timecode into a RED with a Sync box or wireless receiver is pretty straightforward, Can I feed the RED with Rec. Run timecode from a wireless receiver? My understanding of the RED timecode functionality is that the camera only seeks external timecode when in record mode, but wanders off on its own…

Hey Gang, Just wondering if anyone has used this recorder and what your opinion is on it? I also need to know if it will do 24/48k bwf mono files? From what I have read on the website it looks like it does with the new updates. Can you convert the bwf's to mp3's within the recorder? I know you can with the Zoom H4n. I really just need something to grab ambiance, maybe as a back up. I've looked at all other similar recorders, so far I like this one the best. If anyone has heard of anything new coming out, please let me know.

Over on RAMPS, Larry Fisher is looking into what connectors Lectrosonics will be using in the future. I'm reposting (cross posting?) his original message that started the conversation, as there are a number of folks here, but not following RAMPS, who will be interested in the discussion and decision... " The 4 pin Hirose connector used on some products for power, has pin 1 ground (neg) and pin 4 hot (pos). A few products and cables have 1 and 2 wired together and 3 and 4 wired together for redundancy. We are considering using this connector in the medium future as a locking power connector that is moderately common and seems to be reliable. My question is, …

HI This could be more of a warning about cheep SD cards. If i turn my 552 off and then back on again it will not see the SD card until I remove the card and re-insert it. It just says "No SD card". I am using an A-DATA 16Gb SDHC card. Is anyone else having this problem. I know of one other user here in New Zealand having this problem and am checking with others. Adam

Howdy, trying to build a breakaway cable that sends both L+R audio from the mixer to the camera, has the return feed from the camera AND carries timecode. I tried using the SC8/NC8 solution from Neutrik and grounding to the shell but I still get bleed of timecode on the return audio. I need more pins! I know lemo would make a killer solution and a costly one. Any good ideas on a push pull or latch lock connector with 9-10 pins? The hirose 10 pin is just a little bulky and cumbersome. Thanks!

Hi, For a future project (TV commercial) I will work with the Sound Devices 702 Portable Digital Audio Recorder. It records the audio on a CF card. I also want to record on an external bus-powered firewire drive. I have a Lacie Rugged Hard Disk 500Gb. Do I have to use a Firewire filter? I tested the set-up with filter, but my hard drive didn't seem to work. Without the firewire filter, it did work. What does the firewire filter exactly do? I didn't hear any noise using it without filter. Can you guys give me any advice? Thanks!
