Here's a short cart story. I've stood up to mix behind a series of carts and stands for my whole working life as a location soundie (34 yrs), except for certain sorts of multicam and music recording jobs. Now in my "AARP Years", I decided that I needed to change out my big heavy Magliner-based "Ship Of Love" cart for something easier to move around and fittable into smaller spaces and vehicles, and that would allow me to sit while recording at least some of the time. As we all know, these are not the best of financial times, so buying a cart was out of the question. About this time a friend who rents warehouse space with a bunch of other movie technicians called and t…

I just changed a block 22 lectro UM400 from 400 mode to 200 mode. When I turned it on after making the switch (freq still set to position 00), my digital cable blinked out! I retried it three times to confirm that indeed, every time I turned the xmtr on, the cable went to packets for a frame or two, then black. The moment the power switched off on the lectro, the cable comes back like nothing ever happened. Curious.

Gary Larson started it and it turned out to be true, The Suck Button as imagined by our Live Sound family. Not my story, but I like to read it again from time to time and get a good chuckle: My band’s drummer, John, is also a sound guy; for several years before we hooked up musically, he had been doing sound for other bands I was in, as well as for touring acts I booked shows for. He’s very good at what he does, and has a pretty massive rig. Anyway, he’s the nicest guy in the world at band practice, at Burger King, or at a gig we’re playing, but when he’s running sound for other bands, he can be pretty crabby. Very little patience for bands who start late or end lat…

I'm looking to upgrade from my AT-4073a (growing tired of it's mid-range thin sound) which served me well. Beyond the subjective hearing test of these three mics I'm considering, I'm looking for the most recommended for ENG and Film work: interior, exterior, less handling issues, and isolation from off axis aka: reach. KMR81i, CMIT5U, CS3e. Fire away please

I've spoken with a salesperson for a major reseller and they told me that it's smaller than a Fusion 10 but layout is similar and will have "4,6, or 8 record tracks" (apparently user configurable). That's all they felt comfortable telling me - and I understand their position. I've also followed some of the posts on this site and it sounds like a few people have seen a prototype or heard details about the new model. What I would really like to know is: Does the new Fusion have more "hard controls" such as those found on a standalone mixer like the SD442? Does it have hard button PFL's? Does it have knob pans? How many hard faders? Have they d…

Hi All The wet weather continues (in Sydney - still no talk of the drought being declared over) and was looking for comments on ways to waterproof Rycote zeppelins - with 416 under heavy rain everything usually stops after 20- 30 minutes. Really surprised the mic lasts that long. I've got 4 camera units (in the rain, if it's raining) with 416 full zep/windjammer combo and would love to hear from someone that has used or sells something that will keep them ticking over. Not so worried about the sound of the rain hitting the blimp (it's obvious it's raining) but would like to keep the 416 nice and dry so the fun can keep on happening. Thanks

Hey, I got the 26, 16 and 9-inch dishes after NAB and have had a great time hearing what they bring to the party. https://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.com/2018/07/klover-parabolic-collector-microphone.html Regards, Ty Ford

Hi been searching for the thread that discussed the use of an elastic type bandage which is tubular and when used for tx, it folds up to create a pocket that tx goes into. Cant find the thread, can anyone remind me the name of the stuff in question please? its something like Tensor many thanks Peter

Hi all, I’m looking to make a new cable from my RX12 AES out to Deva 24 for the MRX414 modules. What 4 core + shield /2 pair cable are you using to fit into the Ta5 connectors? I’d rather do this than 2 separate cables. Thanks

I normally use either tram or cos11 with my lectro radios, but there has been a few occasions that although the cable is cream or withe, the shirt or blouse of the actors is very see-through and you can see the cable. Or the material is too tight and it creates a vein like effect. I have 2 Countryman B6 that normally are very good in this cases, as the cable is hair thin; but i find the sound a bit thin and very sensitive to clothing noise. What other options are around with such a thin cable? the actual size of the mic is also good, but now as critical.

Using Mini CMIT- after some careful listening-- really starting to not like the blue windscreen that came with mic. And it rubs against the cinela mount-- So i am looking for much thinner foam screens-- Anybody here using something they like? thx,, j

I saw a link to a nice stick-on two-wire digital voltmeter (really thin and about 1"x2" IIRC) either here or on ramps but I lost the link. Anyone here remember what it was? D.

I can't really afford a new 411 system right now so I was thinking about a used 211 system. Is this wasted money? Were the 211 systems all that bad? I know the 211 is not a hybrid system like the 411, but did it have any huge failings, I have little experience with them. I own one 411 system and I love it, but will I be disapointed with the 211 after using the 411? Any feedback on the 211's would be helpful.

I've been thinking about purchasing a small lighting kit- maybe an Arri kit, or/and some LED light panels- just a basic interview package. The plan being that if I'm hired as sound mixer on small ENG shoots I can offer these as extra equipment for rent. On these two man jobs I often end up helping the camera op set up lights anyway. I think could be useful especially to producers who fly in from out of town to do a few quick interviews and fly out right afterwards. I could offer a basic lighting package saving them from bringing heavy lights on the plane, or having to figure out getting lights from a local rental house. It might even save local producers time pickin…

How would you compare the Maxx Nomad to the SD products strictly on a sound basis. I know there are many differences with the features between these units however i am primarily concerned with the sound of the pre's and a-d. I have used sound devices decks before but have no experience with mixers or the Zaxcom product. I know they all sound good but how would someone who knows describe the sonic differences.

Hello, I have been reading the Lectrosonics SRc vs UCR411s threads and have been learning a bit about how they are different. I see in the specs that the Third-order intercept specifications seem very different UCR411a = +8dBm SRc = 0dBm and after reading a Lectro white paper I see the following: IP3 Receiver Performance -5 dBm OK when operating in a clear spectrum 0 dBm Good for moderately congested spectrum +5 dBm Will tolerate fairly high levels of interference from external sources +10 dBm Excellent performance in almost any RF congested environment I am hoping to gain a better …

I went and saw Abe Lincoln this week.. It actually looks 'digital'.. I guess they spent all their money on the post effects.. bummer, I liked the campy movie. Wikipedia is keep track of all the films being shot on Digital now.. But in a few years, the question will not be 'digital vs. film'.. it will be 'which digital camera'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_shot_in_digital -Richard

This may be silly but i have noticed some 400 series lectrosonics wireless receivers say "Digital Hybrid Wireless" on them and some don't. Is this just because of the US patent?, or is there a difference. Im going to guess that there isn't a difference but maybe im wrong. Wouldnt be the 1st time i was wrong about that kind of thing. thanks guys.

The special (green) slot in the metal chassis Audio Ltd. Digital Wireless 1010 transmitter is a micro SD slot. Outside of the USA, this slot will be used to accept an SD card and the card will record audio. The slot will also be used to update firmware. A USA patent will prevent this slot from being used to record audio in the USA. The slot will only be available to update firmware. If you decide to buy an Audio Ltd. 1010 from another country and use it here, the owner of the patent can challenge you. I'm not sure how that works. I think, at some point, the patent will be challenged. How will it play out? I don't know.

Ended up buying a pair after the shootout (they were pretty impressive) and they came today. They do not match with each other, but they both sound pretty good-- would not use as a stereo pair, but would definitely use in the same capacity as an oktava. Haven't swung it around on the pole at all yet...

They look great, but they don't close! A simple drawstring or a built in clamp, or even a folded velcro dealio would work, but the way they come there is a big 2" opening that lets air right on through. My workaround is one of those large 3" binder clips, but that hasn't been field tested. (Just got them two days ago and we've been on a stage.) For how expensive they are and how much we needed them, I'm pretty surprised at this massive oversight. Any suggestions? (I don't like to tape fuzzy things since they tend to pull out the hair and also get sticky, and of course it looks ghetto...) Dan Izen

So I was thinking, if anyone would use a wireless microphone with no input gain adjustment, and the audio was very low, lets say for example that only 8 bits of the A-D converter were being utilized. In this case the audio would be represented by no more than 256 discrete levels. This works out to a dynamic range of 48 dB. Since we can not change the mic gain on the transmitter we can not boost the signal to the A-D in the transmitter to get the proper transmitter A-D resolution of let say 96 dB. So we have lost about 48 dB of dynamic range. If we were to boost the audio signal at the receiver, recorder or at a mixer, we can add 48 dB of gain to come up with a…

After hearing so much about how great they sound and how no one can tell the difference between the Zax wires and a hard wire, I thought I'd take the plunge and step up my wireless quality and count. Plus I hate how noisy the Lectro 400s / 205s I've got are, as I've complained about before. So I bought three TX-900AAs. They worked in tests and sounded great. Then I used them in the field. But they don't have range for crap! 50mw?!! A standard output is 100mw, so why on Earth would Zaxcom think it's okay to make their units with only half the normal output?! I noticed right away the Zaxcoms had WAY less range than my normal Lectros. Good thing I use sharkfins be…
