Hey, So im new here. Great site with a wealth of info - i hope to share some of my experiences as time goes by. Im kinda new to the Film Sound world and have been gathering great experiences for the past few months - I work mainly as a " 1-man-band ", doing all the Booming, Mixing and Recording on Indie productions. I love it and hope to make a career as a Sound Recordist. Heres my Situation: SOUND DEVICES 552 feeding a TASCAM dr70D Recorder - Outputing 552 DIRECT OUT, PRE-FADE to the Tascam = 4 channels of I.S.O Using the Internal 552 recorder as a MIX . eg: Lavs Left MIX / Booms Right Mix. On my latest project, Post want a POL…

We have luckily been able to keep 24 bit 48 kHz recording a standard, which has prolonged the lifespan of our equipment, and not rendered it obsolete like the "resolution wars" that the camera companies are having. But I am curious how long that will last. A friend of mine and I, both hifi enthusiasts, found common ground with vinyl records. Then, an off handed comment on my part brought us to quarter inch tape being our medium of choice. Now we are venturing into DSD, because frankly, we don't want to wear out our tapes, lol. This got me thinking: what if DSD recording became the norm for us? A recent chat with our resident Tascam representative yielded the fact th…

Hi all, I´m have a "small" problem. I have quite a few polyphonic audio files (22 shooting days!) witch have no Production Mix tracks (Boom mix and lav mix), I have a long shot way of doing this in Wave Agent and ProTools (Bounce new mix files in PT and Combine that with the orginal in Wave Agent later. The problem is that the editors want the tracks in a specific order that I can´t seem to be able to change, making the files in wave agent. Although the option seems to be there, the order always stays the same. So I guess my questions are: Has anyone had to do this as well? Can you guys think of any other programs that could do this without wiping out track names a…

Hi ALL! The goal is to maintain existing TC, present in poly files, input to ProTools, through RX5 connect, for processing, back to PT and thence bounced to a stereo file. The poly files have; mix, boom and 4 Isos. Also, Rx5Adv has a Module Chain in place to custom, lightly process nearly all the tracks, from all the files, but this is laborious with approximately 150 files and Izotope's 2 track per pass limit. Any helpful ideas appreciated. Finally, what is the best method, considering the above, to maintain the original TC, through the finished, bounced, stereo files? Thank you very much Fury

I found something I didn´t know exists but does exactly what I was missing ... Ever needed to do a surprise playback from a Deva-File and no laptop with you? Happend to me. What I always carry with me is my iphone. If only I could load a file onto it without a computer. Here is how: get a RAVPOWER All-in-1 Filehub. It got a battery inside (could even charge your phone off it), creates its own wlan network and one can attach an USB-card reader (or HDD or thumbdrive). Download the app (free) to your ios device, connect to the RAVPOWER wlan and copy any file into your phone (within the app). Or just play back from the hub directly. …

The little ring underneath ensures that the mole skin sticks to the bottom of the lav preventing it from slipping out of the rm-11. The RM-11 plastic has 2 pieces of mole skin the same size as TopStick and a topstick piece on the bottom. If you like rm-11 give this a try. It works great...

I've looked at their demo, and downloaded and test-driven the app. It's a little balky but seems to work ok. Does anyone have some real-world stories of using this thing? It is supposed to be able to recalc an existing coordination to a new zip code or Lat/Long location--which it seems to do by supplying a new list of freqs it likes in the blocks/types already specified. So far though, it always seems to want me to refreq every wireless I have even for a move of only a few miles…..?? How do you make this work on a multilocation day? Have you had better luck with this app than with FreqFinder on an iPhone (what I've been using)? philp

Hi everyone, I am about to start a movie shooting on Red Weapons and Editorial have asked the camera to shoot at 23.98 i have not worked on a film for over 10 years that wasn't shot at 24fps. Can done of the members here who work on feature films let me know what the current conventions for sound timecode frame rates and sample rates are for 23.98 picture speed in modern times? Sound would provide master timecode for camera. thanks.

Hey everyone. I am trying to use zaxconvert to convert a file from 23.98 to 29.97. When I open zaxconvert, I only see the option to "pull up" or "pull down". I am not quite sure how to takle the conversion from 23.98 to 29.97. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am putting together material for a training seminar, and I am at the point of discussing projects demanding full multi-track (iso) audio recordings from production. In this scenario, how relevant is a production mix track? Even when post isn't asking for it? Thoughts?

Hey Guys, Just a quick question, I have been reading about on set music playback in the forms, and I couldn't find how exactly to make a Timecode Audio Track in Pro Tools. What do you guys use to generate that audio? Third Party plug in? In Pro Tools method? Standard audio files that you use over and over? (I have PT9 on a iMac.) Thanks guys

Hi all, I'm just interested to see what method most people use as track/take naming conventions. The reason being, on the last feature I worked on, the dop was adamant on using phonetics from "A-Z" rather than the conventional "slate" method. Bit annoying as when they got to Z, they started from A.1, B.2 etc. And pick-up scenes were another nightmare. I normally set my track names as "sce_1_T01,sce_1_T02......" and obviously change the scene number when we shoot a new scene. Any cheap way to use a keyboard with the 744T to speed up my writing. The CL-1 is way overpriced for what is it. What track naming method do you use?

Does anyone know if the BBC still requires stereo elements in deliverables to be recorded in MS? I found this on their tech page which leads me to believe it still is: "Stereo programmes must be recorded so as to be compatible for listeners in mono. In general signals should be in phase between channels. The S (difference) signal should rarely exceed the M (sum) signal (otherwise cancellation can result when the signal is heard in mono)."

I recently bought a brand new Delkin 32GB CF card for my 788t, and found this disturbing behavior: if the recorder is turned on while the card is already inserted, neither the internal HD or the CF card appear on the screen. It took us more than an hour of troubleshooting to figure out that the culprit was the card. After I tested the issue with all my other cards to confirm this, I went back to the vendor and asked for an exchange. We tried another card and, wouldn't you know it, we had the same issue. We looked for a card from a different batch - problem gone. In order to avoid this issue, look at the back of the packaging. At the bottom, next to the bar code, you'll …

Just wondering about how to handle the 60 seconds of tone (-20dBFS/ roughly -20LKFS) and 30 sec of silence before the program starts when measuring/ correcting loudness to a target value of -24LKFS. The 1770-3 standard gates for silence but doesn't ignore tone so the integrated loudness will be skewed by that tone if included in the file to be measured/ corrected. I'm mixing close to -24LKFS by ear, doing what I've always done but I want to include a render for loudness to get as accurate as possible using RX5's loudness tool. If I include tone in the file (like I always did in the past) it'll turn down the audio because there's 1 minute of "content" (tone) that is 4 dB…

Just wondering what you guys use to quiet down noisy leather on set. Be it shoes or an armchair? I've heard people mention that soaps are a good fix. Is this the stuff they're talking about? https://www.wardrobesupplies.com/products/fiebings-foaming-saddle-soap

How many people are using electronic sound reports and what programs are you using? Is this something that you have adopted on your own or has it been requested by production and do you do a paper backup? I am doing a studio show that will run until December so this will provide me with an opportunity to play around with different programs. I am thinking of using Movie Slate even though I wont get the full benefit due to the fact I'm using a Deva VS a SD product. I know there has been some previous discussion regarding this but is it just a toy to have on the cart and one more thing to hang off of it? So far production has not requested the use of shared meta data on se…

Hello everyone, Say there is a break during a shoot and you go record some useful ambience & FX, switch from 48k to 96k, and forget to switch back to 48k for the next few takes when the shoot resumes. What are your suggestions to do this conversion, considering the priorities are,in order of importance: 1.sound quality 2.preserving metadata 3.possibility of batch conversion Thankful for any tips

Hey everyone, I work for a university production studio where we specialize in multitrack audio recording and offer multi camera video capture. I say it in this way because, unlike film, we lock an edit in the audio realm before its sent to the video editing folks. With our current workflow the video editors have to spend a good deal of time manually realigning takes of video to the audio mix before the creative editing process can take place. Currently we record, edit, and mix our audio in Protools 11 and edit video in FinalCut Pro X. Each of the video cameras captures onto a separate SxS card and timecode and genlock are not distributed throughout the studio. …

I'm rigging a psc euro cart for a drama series and have the possibility of using a pic six pack to wrangle receivers together. I'd like to send signal to a 788t from wisycom mcr42 via aes but can't tell if it will work. I've contacted the mfg, but they haven't gotten back to me yet so I'm hoping I can discover something here. is there anyone here who currently does this? is there a workaround that was necessary? the psc six pack is a perfect layout for me as I'll have two booms and 6 lavs most days, but perhaps there are other good options? (no, the sound dashboard will not work, as I need only 3 slot-in wisys). I'll build the db37 myself from an existing xl88. /Mile…

Hi. Not much time, need to post this so I can find responses in the field. Shooting music video - running playback in 788T. Edit gave me files they created as 23.98, but 788T recognizes them as 30NDF. ...? Not sure why. Need to get these files into 23.98 since thats the requested TC for the shoot. I don't have protools, but I have FCP. Wave Agent doesn't show the frame rate... How can I get my 788 to see they are 23.98 files, or change the files so 788 recognizes them as 23.98 instead of 30fps? 788T and cameras are set at 23.98, but 788T sees the sound files as 30ND (and I'm 99% certain they were recorded at 23.98). Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

So I have an actress friend who is going to make a music video in the near future. I told her I'd help out. I don't want things to get too complicated, and I have no idea what kind of camera they are going to use. I own Protools Micro, so I can have music from LEFT (out to a pair of 450w JBL EON) and TC out of RIGHT (broadcast to my Denecke slate with a 216). Is it any more complicated than that? Can it even be easier with waveform matching? Do I even bother with the TC slates? I don't really want to bring my whole cart, since it's on a show. The editor is "proper" feature editor. Also a friend. So he ought to be able to handle any workflow. …
