We are celebrating the 16th anniversary of the JWSOUND site which continues to be a vibrant and highly popular resource for our sound community. I have seldom asked for donations to support this site , over the years there have been so many spontaneous and generous unsolicited donations it has been a real help in running the site. At this time I am asking for donations if you are able to as the expense of running the site has increased (hasn't everything except our wages!) I have never strived to monetize this site as many other sites have and there has been over the years substantial support from the paid advertising banners running on the site. Many of the companies tha…

I am asking that those members that feel they can afford it to donate a small amount of money to help me with the costs of maintaining this Discussion Group site and CinemaSound. I have been able to manage on my own for the last 5 years to keep these sites up and running, upgrading the software that powers this forum, upgrading my server accounts, routine and some not so routine maintenance, but I could use some help now. I am asking for a donation of $10.00 (US) on a yearly basis to keep all this going. This is totally voluntary and no one should fear that either of these great sites will be taken down if no one donates. I am asking for $10.00 but any amount will be ap…

Vanessa Withers, Jeff Wexler's daughter— 56m · In Loving Memory of Jeff Wexler (1947 - 2025) Yesterday, our dad, Jeff Wexler, passed away at his home in Santa Monica after years of struggling with chronic kidney disease. He was 78. Losing him is overwhelming, even though we knew his body had been fighting for a long time. Our dad was kind in a way that felt effortless, generous in a way that asked for nothing back, and endlessly curious about the world. What meant the most to him was his family. He was a source of unwavering support, encouragement, and love, always present for us regardless of his professional commitments. He also had a life in cinema that s…

I am very sad to report that the love my life, my sweet Carol, has passed away. Many of you know her and have worked with her, Unit Still Photographer Carol McCullough, retired for many years now but never on Facebook. She had a fall, one of many, and was in rehab getting Physical Therapy and had a stroke from which she did not recover. We were together for 35 wonderful years with no loss of love, through wonderful times and not so wonderful times -- I miss her so much.

I searched this site for this topic and found nothing. A couple of questions. One, does anyone ever advise news correspondents, interview subjects, or anyone you've miked, to enunciate clearly? Some people have a tendency to jumble words, which of course makes it hard for audiences to understand what they are saying. Also, is it just me, or does it seem like jumbled speech is becoming more common, especially regarding interview subjects?

Here in the Midwest USA work has been very scarce this year. Worse than the COVID years. I didn't realize it might be international. Is this headline true?

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tom Lehrer, the popular and erudite song satirist who lampooned marriage, politics, racism and the Cold War, then largely abandoned his music career to return to teaching math at Harvard and other universities, has died. He was 97. I loved Tom Lehrer! My mother bought the first record, I played it over and over again, I think I learned all the words at age 5 or 6! The only one I had trouble with was The Elements -- I could never really get all the way through that one. Many, many years later in High School I tried to sing the Elements but in the proper order of the Periodic Table of Elements --- could not do it because of cou…

Don Zimmerman, a veteran film editor who scored an Oscar nom for Coming Home and worked on dozens of other movies including Being There, The Prince of Tides, Night at the Museum and two Rocky sequels, died July 24 of acute myeloid leukemia at his Studio City home. He was 81. I had not been in contact with Don for years, very sad to hear of his passing. On Facebook, of course, again continuing my love-hate with Facebook. Don was very much in the Hal Ashby group, I did a number of movies with him besides the Hal Ashby movies, he was a pleasure to work with, so mutually supportive and a real team player. When he asked me if I would do the sequel to …

Just reading in a Facebook post by Steve Maslow that Mike Kohut has passed away. Here is a part of an interview by Mel Lambert with Mike published several years ago. Michael Kohut, during his more than 30+ years with the various entities that now comprise the Sony Pictures Studios' post-production complex in Culver City, CA, has done just about everything involved with sound for the movies. Starting in 1965 as a production-sound cable man with MGM, Kohut has worked consistently within the facility, remaining through its various transfers in ownership. During three decades he advanced to lead re-recording mixer, with over 50 credits, including "Basic Instinct," "…

For a few months my granddaughter CJ has been in a contest to become the next Junior Ranger. With a little over a day left she is 5th in her quarter final group. She needs to be in first to move to the finals. Today happens to be two for one votes and I'm pulling out all the stops to try and get her to the next round. Voting is free unless you want to make a donation which yields more votes. CJ has visited a National Park every year since she was a baby. Now she's eight. https://jr-ranger.org/2025/cj-09eb Thanks so much! If this post isn't allowed please move or remove.

The Las Vegas audio community suffered a great loss today with the passing of Paul Hoggatt. Among other things, Paul was the ringside lead A2 for HBO Boxing for over 30 years. He never had anything but a kind word or some helpful advice for anybody who was wise enough to listen. His devotion to his work and his friends was legendary and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

This would be great if it were true, but this is the first time I have heard this story, and the article does not have any references. Does anyone know if this was indeed the first use of a boom on American feature films? http://inventors.about.com/od/audiowaxrecordstomp3/p/Dorothy-Arzner-Boom-Microphone.htm

I just heard that Chris Newman has died, February 3rd. My father gave Chris one of his first jobs in sound on the movie "Medium Cool". Chris had done some documentary work and my father had already decided that "Medium Cool" would be shot very much in a documentary style during the Democratic convention in Chicago in 1968. Chris was helpful in the beginning of my career in sound but I realized in hindsight that I learned a lot more about the politics of sound mixing than I did about actual sound mixing. In retirement Chris was a great teacher and was very generous, even throughout his working career, with his knowledge and experience (and opinions!).
