Hey guys, just got done watching It (2017) and I was curious what you guys thought of the sound. The sound design and music were very good, but it sounded like the dialogue was distorting constantly. It sounded like distortion from getting crushed by compressors. Definitely sounded like something that was done on set and not in post. Maybe it was just the center speaker at the theater I was at, but I was curious if anyone else had the same experience.

Tragic news again. Mark Milsome, a camera operator, died on set on Nov 18 shooting a stunt scene. Very sad. I don't have any connections with him, just saw the news. Very little is known about the actual accident, what happened and why. http://deadline.com/2017/11/camera-operator-mark-milsome-dies-stunt-forgiving-earth-bbc-netflix-drama-republic-1202212192/

Hi Folks, My fiancee recently received a job offer in Vancouver that would give her permanent Canadian residency thus we are considering making the move. I'm wondering if I (a US citizen) would then be eligible to work on productions that shoot in Canada? I'm currently a 695 & 479 member but is there an IATSE local I would have to join there? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, As a recent recipient of a FCC Part 74 license I was evidently included in the recent T-mobile mailing of their certified letter notifications about their intent to use the 600MHz space. I am on the road, but have become aware that a USPS notice of an attempt to deliver was left on my door. I will not be available to travel to the post office to sign for and retrieve the letter before it is returned to sender. I am wondering how this circumstance relates to the FCC policy that my address of record needs to be current and accurate. My address is accurate and current (I have resided at the same location for 25+ years) but I am not avai…

I want to let our Atlanta customers know that, for the safety of our staff, Trew Audio in Atlanta is now closing for the day due to hurricane Irma. However, the phones will be answered and orders can still be made.

New York Times has an article today about how the U.S. Labor Department tracks the skills needed for most jobs, in terms of things like "hand strength", "acute sense of smell", or "mathematical analysis". The article lets you enter the name of your job, and kicks out which job it considers to use the exact opposite set of skills. There's no entry for "production mixer" or "sound designer" or "postie"... but it will accept Sound Engineering Technician. Guess what.... we're not nuclear physicists! (Yeah, I know. The article isn't rocket science either, and its analysis has lots of faults. Think of it more like a party game.)

Hi, Amidst the chatter and clatter of what to do when the door closes on the 600MHz band. Here's a reasoned response. Now for all of you still using 700 MHz.......well........you know. http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/site/16505e589e0be6c8/index.html Everyone's situation may be different. How do you see this situation and what's your strategy? Regards, Ty Ford

I borrowed this picture from Mr. Sutoh Takahiro of the FB Zoom F8/F4 group. There has been some discussion here about the advisability of using a tool like the Cedar DNS2 on location: here one is in action. The juxtaposition of a $3k + NR tool and a $900 8/2 file based recorder seemed to me, and oldster, remarkable and perhaps an indication of a direction location recording is going. There have been many calls on this board for recorder makers to up their DSP enough that something like the DNS2 could be included internally--this, and other DSP-hungry audio processes now seem possible given the pace of improvement in digital electronics these days. I have the old-soun…

Background to May Day: In 1884, unions declared that eight hours would constitute a legal day’s work from and after May 1, 1886. When workers went on strike at a factory in Chicago on May 3, 1886, police fired into the peacefully assembled crowd, killing four and wounding many others. The workers movement called for a mass rally the next day in Haymarket Square to protest this brutality. The rally proceeded peacefully until the end when 180 police officers entered the square and ordered the crowd to disperse. At that point, someone threw a bomb, killing one police officer and wounding 70 others. The police responded by firing into the crowd, killing one and injuring many …

Microsoft plans to spend $10 billion to bring broadband to rural America Seems like a good idea until you start to read: "The project will rely on a new “white-space” technology, which beams internet data over unused television broadcast frequencies. Microsoft hopes to work with the government to collect information from local television stations about what part of their television spectrum goes unused." http://www.siliconbeat.com/2017/07/11/microsoft-plans-spend-10-billion-bring-broadband-rural-america/ I have had the experience of a major sporting event reduced to only hard wired gear working thank to the stadium management company going to a white sp…
