I've just been in contact with a PhD candidate in Australia who is writing her dissertation on creating sound for TV and Film. She is particularly interested "in your views on the craft of sound, and how you work with sound technically, creatively and physically". While she's not a production person I did an interview with her last week and the questions were thoughtful and interesting. Here's her contact letter: Introduction Letter-AlisonW.docx David

I am a freelance sound recordist based in Nigeria. I love this job so much. But you know, as a freelance, jobs don't come always. My question is this, what exactly do i do at those times when jobs don't come? I don't have my equipments yet so i can't be playing with equipments etc.. Please can anyone suggest blogs to me where i can download videos and tutorials as regards location sound recording? I will also take suggestions on what to do with my spare time cos at times i have too much of it. Lastly, if anyone is coming to Nigeria or any African countries to work, I'm always here to assist. Thanks.

Hi all, I'm a sound guy from Finland and will be visiting LA in early March. If someone has no better things to do, I'd like to meet for a coffee / beer and have a chat about things. I work mostly for Finnish productions and have done both production and post sound for about 15 years now. It would be great to talk a bit about different production cultures, budgets and workflows for example, or just hang out. I'll be there March 3-12. More spare time in the first few days (weekend 4th and 5th especially) And if anybody has connections to post facilities, would love to visit some as well (if it's even possible.) PM me if you feel like it. Thanks! Tu…

Hey all, I am traveling down to DC this weekend to document the Women's March and the scene surrounding Trump's Inauguration. Our team is very small (3 people total). Our cameraman will be shooting on a discreet camera and I'd like to do my best to keep my audio gear discreet. We aren't affiliated with any company or organization, we are filming entirely independently, for our own use. Our goal and focus is loose as this is the first piece of the doc we are shooting. We are hoping for general event coverage and some select interviews with subjects as we encounter them. I'm wondering if anyone has experience in these type of very high security environments - and …

They say be careful what you wish for.... but I do wish 2016 a swift kick in the ass as it passes on into 2017 and beyond. While many die every year, it seems like we lost too many great artist. Maybe it's just age. My boomers are getting old. But enough about us,(we never said)... I'd like to give Thanks to JW and all the contributors here @jwsound, (except one of ya;~) ) for making this such a good, informative, and often fun place to hang with the Nerd Nation of sound people. I look forward to more of the same in 2017 and whatever comes our way. Cheers as RVD would say. CrewC

I attended a screening of Warren Beaty's new film, Rules Don't Apply, last night. It was a lot of fun and my wife, Susan, and I enjoyed it greatly. It's a fable intertwining the lives of the two young lovers with their mutual boss, Howard Hughes. A number of the prominent events of Hughes' life are dramatized in exuberant fashion and many scenes are a hoot. It does suffer, I think, from wandering dramatic focus as the film seems to veer from being about the young lovers to being about the outrageous Mr. Hughes. It also has a peculiar timeline that purports to start around 1955 and end in 1964 but incorporates notorious events that took place both before and after tha…

A group at MIT has come up with a way to generate very real-looking motion videos, with people and objects doing what they'd normally do, based on a single still photo of the scene! Article at http://web.mit.edu/vondrick/tinyvideo/ has before-and-after shots, along with a discussion of the algorithm and machine learning involved. The process is in its infancy and generating only short, small-format clips. But we've all seen how quickly these things can be developed, once you throw money and programmers at them. For those who say, "well, what about the story? We'll always need to have writers and actors and directors..." I respond - not really tongue-in-che…
