This mummy isn't a movie, but an actual mummified Egyptian priest from 3000 years ago. Researchers wheeled his remains into a CT scanner, mapped his vocal tract, and 3D-printed a replica of his throat and mouth. They bolted it to a compression horn driver, and claim it reproduces the guy's authentic voice. It makes a good story in today's NYTimes along with a brief audio sample and a link to the research paper in Nature. It's also only a story. The mechanism used to create "speech" -- a complex vowel waveform generated by a computer and controlled by a joystick, then sent through a few fixed low-Q resonators in the 3D-printed "mouth" -- is nothing…

My daughter Roxie wrote the story and libretto for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize winning opera p r i s m. The prize, post the premiere in NYC, got them a run at the magnificent Teatro Municipal in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Here's a pic from a singer's POV during soundcheck in the hall. The composer, Ellen Reid is in white in the center aisle, and Roxie is seated back row right. It's been quite an experience, tremendous ovations and support from the locals. Next, the Kennedy Center in March '20.

Sebastian made it into the Gotham Hound calendar! Silly? Yes. Also fun. I used an outtake from the photo session as the base for my avatar here and site logo.

My dear friend and fellow worker, Don Coufal, passed away this morning. Don was so much a part of my life having spent over half my life with him over the last 40+ years --- we did 67 movies together, countless commercials, co-founded Northstar Media Sound Services. I owe so much of my career to Don's incredible talent, his unwavering commitment to our work together. So often when I was offered a job or someone was recommending me, they would always say "get Jeff-and-Don" like it was one entity, and in so many ways we were --- so different from eachother, our strengths and weaknesses, but so incredibly complimentary as a team, so much more than either of us individua…

Professional sound mixer and Editor-In-Chief at Wav.Report Jared Elkin took a ride with us to chat about his experience in sound, the state of the industry, gear and anecdotes. I hope you find it interesting, perhaps useful. If you can take a 20 minute break, it's always a good thing to get perspective from other sound mixers. Hi everybody, I'm working on a callsheet app with a very different premise: just display the callsheet on your screen. I need testers but for the moment there are specific requirements: - You're on Android - You use Gmail or Microsoft (outlook, hotmail, etc) to receive your callsheets - You're comfortable letting an app search your email for today's callsheet (no data is ever transferred off the device) If you're interested, you can check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newendian.android.opencallsheet Best, James

This scares the heck out of me. What if they recorded only the harmonics of the attack. Permanent hearing loss or permanent tinnitus would take away the most important tool I own. Egad!!!! permanent

Collateral Damage & Such. As most of you know I was hit with a heart attack back in April this year. It took it's toll to be sure on many levels. It affected my ability to operate Production Sound Solutions in Ft. Lauderdale. That along with the loss of film incentive packages and the booming of Atlanta as the hot local market causing many local mixers to relocate there in search of more work. The point is that those issues combined have made me take a long hard look at keeping the shop operational. Sadly and with a great deal of remorse I have officially closed the shop as of Aug 1, 2019. There will be more details on sales of remaining stock and other items of …

The 2 person sound crew is making a comeback thanks to the International. "Comeback Trail" (no joke) staring Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones is coming to New Mexico to start shooting next week. Producers have figured out they can come to NM and by-pass the ASA contract and sign "One Off's". Not only do they get reduced crew at reduced rates they also get the local rebates. There are eleven producers listed on iMDB, no downsizing there. This is the second time I know of a major production doing this. The other film was Hell or High Water. Now that the International has made this a standard for "One Off's " why would any othe…

From Deadline Hollywood: Cinema’s Digital Takeover: The Decline And Fall Of Film As We Have Known It Digital cinema has overtaken film a lot sooner than many people might have predicted before Avatar was released, but it was probably inevitable. At latest count almost two-thirds of all domestic screens used digital projectors by the beginning of the year. That’s 25,570 screens out of a total 39,641 or 64.5%, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Roughly half — 12,620 — of those digital screens were equipped to show movies in 3D and 244 of those were IMAX installations. The total of individual theaters was almost 5,800, and 3,028 of thos…

Live and learn, there are no minimum staffing requirements in the IA contract. The IA can sign a one off contract with anything the Producer wants in it.
