From Nikki Finke's DeadlineHollywood.com: "Marc Webb, the (500) Days Of Summer director, has climbed to the top of the Sony Pictures' list to rebirth the Spider-Man franchise. While the studio has a wish list of star directors like James Cameron, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson, the emergence of Webb as director comes as a huge surprise. But Mike Fleming's sources tell him Webb met about the Spidey reboot with the pic's producers and executives looking to get the picture into production later this year for a Summer 2012 release. Why will the pic take so long? Because it's likely to be shot in 3-D, and Sony Pictures plans to make an announcement about that "at the appro…

Via Deadline Hollywood. BREAKING NEWS! Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is expected. http://www.deadline.com…

French filmmaker Eric Rohmer has died, aged 89. Les Films du Losange, a company that produced his movies, says Rohmer died in Paris on Monday. The cause of death was not immediately known. Rohmer was known for movies tracing the intricacies of romantic relationships. His best known pics included "My Night at Maud's" and "Claire's Knee." He had worked until recently, with his latest film, "Les amours d'Astree et de Celadon," (Romance of Astree and Celadon), appearing in 2007. Rohmer debuted in cinema in the early 1950s, making dozens of films. In 2001, he was awarded a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his body of work.

From KNX Radio, via Twitter: NBC Primetime boss Angela Bromstad: "The Jay Leno Show" will no longer air at 10 as of the Olympics. New late-night schedule not done yet. I remember reading all the angst when the show began and then the wishes he'd fail on Jwsound. So let's hear some reactions please. RL

I am making an appeal to all our member to once again consider joining CinemaSound network as an alternative to our Discussion Group here. I know I asked many months ago and a few people did join up (actually, the Aussies started a group which is very well attended) but in no way was CinemaSound going to be able to replace the Discussion Group. It's a new year and I continue to be gratified that this group functions so well and is such a nice place for us all to hang out, but I am still very motivated to move things over to CinemaSound to provide for our members so many more features and ease of use. Even just the simple forum-type features we have here work so much bette…

I've just discovered a great reason why guests should become members; you get to see all the pictures. As a guest, you only get to see the linked pictures and miss out on all the ones uploaded by members - and there's a lot more of those. Many threads or posts make no sense without seeing the picture.

Happy New Year folks! I'm sure many of you have heard about the FOX/TimeWarner dispute. FOX wants $1 per subscriber, and TWC is refusing to pay, citing increased cost to its customers. Personally, I do not see how it's fair to ask for that kind of share. I didn't have cable growing up, and the only channels we got were 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, and U (this was in Chicago, by the way). But the understanding was, it's FREE, paid for by advertisers dollars. FOX has claimed, according to the AP, that they must ask for a higher share to make up for lost advertising revenue. How is this the customers fault or problem? And why should TW cable subscribers have to pay these costs exc…

The web site appears to have gone away. I guess any software updates can be gotten from Fostex dealers. Corporate belt tightening I suspect. I couldn't down load the updates to my Mac anyway. Happy New Years!!!

Nearly everyone who has used the limiters of the older Sonosax SX-S8 mixer for production dialog likes them and finds them to be very useful. The limiters in my modern Sonosax SX-ST seem to behave and sound the same as the older SX-S8 limiters (except for the knob pointer position, which is fine), and I like them, find them very useful, and have raved about them publicly, and recommended them. This is why I was disturbed and surprised to hear grumblings from SX-ST mixer owners unhappy with their limiters, some even claiming that they were "unusable". When listening to the limiters of some of the mixers in question, I agreed that they either had serious problems or were…

It has come to my attention that quite s few people here have bookmarked the URL that goes to a portal page (the one that is all gray and has Don's image from The Last Samurai at the top) and then they click on the link for the Discussion Group. Since I may be taking down the page that people go to if they just put in "jwsound.net" it would be better if you got to the Discussion Group (this site) and bookmarked that URL (which will be something like http://jwsound.net/SMF --- that is the true URL for this site. In the future, providing your browser doesn't auto fill the wrong URL, if you go to just http://jwsound.net you will most probably arrive at my personal web…

I have put up a facebook Group for everyone here and our facebook friends, which can parallel our great group. This was done in much the same manner as I did the CinemaSound network (which still exists but is of course very much under-attended), wishing to harness the power of a much larger network of people than I can handle here. I also have continuing concerns about the whole sign up procedures, security and so forth, things which are handled quite well by facebook (with over 350 million members!). So, the facebook things is not a substitute, but rather an addition to, this group here. jwsound.net on facebook Regards, Jeff Wexler

Roy E Disney has passed away. I got to know this smart warm hearted man when I was the mixer on "Fantasia 2000". What a class act. He knew everyones name and job. He made all feel wanted. A real gentleman in all aspects on that project. We shot 12/14 days over 5/6 weeks and they were so much fun because he was having a ball. He told some great stories and I am sure he will be missed by his family and many friends. Maybe not Michael Eisner, but your enemy's say as much about you as your friends. RIP Roy. CrewC

this isn't for working, experienced sound folks, but targeted for camera types & shooters, and director types. The class will be oriented to teachin what these folks should know about production sound, and giving them some "ears-on" experience. If you know folks this might be of interest or helpful to, please let them know, and they can attend the first session without registering!! (that means for free!!) https://www.uclaextension.edu/r/Course.aspx?Reg=V5015.

A first for my career, this year a feature I mixed is in the final 16 Drama competition at Sundance! I am going to attend, mostly because I have a reason to be there, I have not been before, and I hear they have good skiing. Obselidia is the name of the picture, and I have no idea what its prospects are, but it's exciting! If anyone has any advice on how to make the most of it, I'd love to hear your stories. If anyone will be attending, we should try to meet up! Cheers, Tom Curley, CAS

I assume you do, how did you find yourself in audio? I just wanted to post this. If you need some new music in your life, here are 75 of the best songs from 2009 that you can download for free! And since "they" say that 80% of people that download music also buy it, I encourage this kind of sampling. It's also a great website about new music. http://www.saidthegramophone.com/ Here is the link for the 75 songs (it's about 300mb in a zip file) http://www.infinitemb.com/download/6424/STG_2009.zip/ Enjoy!

Just read it in the Gotham Gazette: Lectrosonics Update Lectrosonics Reblocked Wireless frequencies are about to undergo some necessary shuffling, due to the FCC auction of the spectrum above 700 mHz, which will take effect February 2009. Lectrosonics is no exception, making Block 27, 28, and 29 no longer available except by special order in 2008 and entirely unavailable thereafter. To compensate, Lectro will be expanding the blocks available on the lower end of the spectrum. Blocks 19 and 20, pending FCC approval, will roll out first quarter 2008, with a possibility of further expansion later. In addition, more products will be added using block 944.
