A recent DOT notice re a dormant topic: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are alerting shippers and carriers to the importance of transporting lithium batteries safely. PHMSA and FAA are concerned that many persons who ship lithium batteries do not recognize the hazards posed by these batteries during transportation. http://cryptome.org/0001/phmsa100709.htm Several anecdotal events are listed. I find irony with the "e-cigarette" incident.

From Deadline Hollywood and Nikki Finke: Now The Hollywood Reporter is telling some staff that the trade publication will be going from a daily to a weekly by April. This follows the bosses there telling Hollywood players to advertise in the print edition before the end of the year when the trade would go online only. This was backed up by THR staff trying to pressure the studios and networks to agree to help with special issues honoring their respective moguls only before December. Repeatedly, the staff said the issues had to run by December or not at all. Obviously the THR situation is very fluid. We'll see what happens. Meanwhile, Variety is still planning to put its …

So I supervised a reality pilot about two months ago using two very talented ENG mixers to help me... Fernando Muga and Tim Brown lll. Three crews in all, Los Angeles based, including me. Tim and Fernando did an excellent job of audio mixing and I highly recommend them if anyone is looking for mixers. I just got the word on Friday that the show did not get picked up because 20 other pilots were in the bidding as well for the upcoming season.... I was told that I can get a copy of the pilot if I wanted and that audio and video were captured perfectly. It seems that the theme of the show just did not fit the mix of what the client was looking for.... Dang.... Oh well. We…

The news broke yesterday, thanks to Nikki Finke but I'm late in cross posting this. Weinstein Co's Dimension Films Stops Pre-Production On 'Halloween 3D' "So here's what happened: the script only came in Friday, and it was the first draft that Dimension Films had seen. And The Weinstein Co was rushing to get the film into production for a November start date in Shreveport. Bob Weinstein shut down H3D pre-production "because Bob just felt it was rushing too fast." Now Dimension plans to start the film after My Bloody Valentine 3D helmer Lussier is free." This article is a bit light on details, but it seems the police car and its occupants suffered most: A Portland police patrol car carrying two crew members from the television show "Cops" collided with another car Tuesday night, police said. http://www.officer.com/online/article.jsp?siteSection=1&id=48627

Variety: SAG elects Howard president Bitter race concluded Thursday By DAVE MCNARY Ken Howard's election to national president of the Screen Actors Guild amounts to a repudiation of the uncompromising strategy that previous prexy Alan Rosenberg embodied during his four-year tenure. With an impressive 47% of the vote after a bitter race, Howard's win for a two-year term sets the stage for the next round of contract negotiations -- and once again raises questions of a merger with sister thesp guild AFTRA. In a brief news conference at SAG headquarters, Howard said his first task will be to reach out to DGA president Taylor Hackford, WGA West prez John Wells and AF…

I know most are hoping for cancellation, so here's some red meat. From Deadline Hollywood -- Nikki Finke keeps it real: "Yeah, this was a GREAT idea, Jeff Zucker. Once again, just like last season, NBC ranked fourth in primetime Monday, dead last among all the broadcast networks, with a weak 2-hour Heroes premiere that fell 46% from last year's opener. At 10 PM, The Jay Leno Show attracted only 5.7 million viewers, but most importantly fell to 1.8 (for 3rd position, since Fox doesn't program at 10 PM). It had recorded a low of only 2.0 last week during its debut. Nor can NBC save face by boasting about Jay's demographics since he skews older. As I noted at the time, it w…

Anyone interested can see the "Valentine's Day" teaser on my blog (linked to YouTube). Definitely a Garry Marshall romantic comedy with an all star cast and just enough story to keep it going. The movie was an absolute dream job that ended too quickly (only a 53 day schedule). http://jwsound.net/WP/?p=710 Regards, Jeff Wexler

As reported in Variety. Hollywood scribes have narrowly elected John Wells to the presidency of the Writers Guild of America West, returning to him to the post he held a decade ago. Wells defeated treasurer Elias Davis, who had been endorsed by president Patric Verrone as part of a slate that had promised to continue the assertive policies of leaders who guided the WGA during its bitter 100-day strike in 2007-08. Turnout for the hard-fought election was well above historic norms with about 30% of guild members casting a total of 2,348 ballots cast. In results announced Friday afternoon, Wells drew 52.8% of the vote for prexy to Davis' 47.2%, winning by 125 votes. …

Here is an exclusive from good ol' Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood. com: "EXCLUSIVE: In my opinion, this is a necessary step if the financially beleaguered trades are going to survive the current economic downturn. Even if advertising does pick up for other media outlets. Because the contraction in the entertainment industry, and the change to a no-frills attitude regarding lavish awards advertising, has permanently hurt the trades which in turn have tried to staunch the bleeding by massive layoffs. (On a personal note, no matter how hard I compete with Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, I'd hate to see either trade disappear from the showbiz landscape. Too many peo…

Wow, those of us who grew up listening to Peter Paul and Mary; "BOSTON – Mary Travers, who as one-third of the hugely popular 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary helped popularize such tunes as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "If I Had a Hammer," died Wednesday after battling leukemia for several years. She was 72. The band's publicist, Heather Lylis, says Travers died at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. Bandmate Peter Yarrow said that in her final months, Travers handled her declining health with bravery and generosity, showing her love to friends and family "with great dignity and without restraint." "It was, as Mary always was, honest and completely authentic," he…

Please feel free to Email this link to everyone on your Email list involved in the motion picture and television industry, since the MPTV Fund provides services for SAG, AFTRA, Teamsters, IATSE, WGA and DGA members (and probably other Guilds, but these are the ones that I am aware of).

How do I really feel..The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has revamped the rules on the final vote for Best Picture. As you already know there will now be 10 Best Picture nominees instead of the 5 for every other category. That "American Idolesque" plan was bad enough. But hold on to your seats. The final vote will not be just pick one definitive choice out of those ten nominees, but rank them! Here is how Variety explains it: "Instead of just marking an 'X' to indicate which one picture they believe to be the best, members will indicate their second, third and further preferences as well," Academy president Tom Sherak said. "PricewaterhouseCoopers will…

The spreading fires in the Angeles Crest are threatening the Mount Wilson communication towers as well as the observatory. The fire department had a strike team up there, but pulled them off the scene near dusk as it looked like the top will be over run by the fast moving wild fire. Mount Wilson has many transmitters for L.A. FM radio, TV as well as fire and police communications and some cell providers too. Don't know what this could mean to over all fire and police communications. You can take a look at the live camera feed here: www.astro.ucla.edu RL

As we citizens debate the proposed Government Health Care bill, in advance of Congress doing the same in September. I pass along this cautionary article, fresh off the pages of The Vancouver Sun, "Thousands of surgeries may be cut in Metro Vancouver due to government underfunding, leaked paper" VANCOUVER — Vancouver patients needing neurosurgery, treatment for vascular diseases and other medically necessary procedures can expect to wait longer for care, NDP health critic Adrian Dix said Monday. "Dix said a Vancouver Coastal Health Authority document shows it is considering chopping more than 6,000 surgeries in an effort to make up for a dramatic budgetary shortfall …
