I got to hand it to Nikki Finke, she does not hold back speaking her mind. I also happen to agree with her. As an Academy member I think the decision stinks, along with Sherak being the point person in getting the Academy to now have 10 films vying for Best Picture, thus diluting the worthiness of the Academy Award. WHAAAAT? Tom Sherak New AMPAS Prez "What an AWFUL decision. Because Tom Sherak has been responsible of late for many of the worst decisions by the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Heck, this guy helped run Revolution Studios into the ground. Now he's going to do the same thing with AMPAS. What a lameass tool. What a moronic Board Of Governor…

This is from Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily: SAG vs AFTRA Scripted Primetime TV Series I had repeatedly asked both unions to give me tallies on how many primetime network scripted shows this next 2009/2010 TV season will be under SAG's or AFTRA's administration, and especially the breakdown of new shows since so much inaccurate information was being tossed around during the contract vote. Finally SAG replied. AFTRA has yet to answer despite PR assurances it would. 2009/2010 Scripted Prime Time Schedule (Screen Actors Guild figures) SAG 69% AFTRA 31% 2009/2010 Returning Series SAG 44 AFTRA 5 2009/2010 Pilot Pickups SAG 5 AFTRA 25 http://www.de…

This from the online L.A. Times: LAPD Chief Bratton postpones uniform change for retired cops working movie sets "The Los Angeles City Council put off a decision today on a proposal by Councilman Greig Smith intended to resolve a dispute over the uniforms worn by retired officers when they secure and direct traffic on film sets. Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton has favored new guidelines under which those former officers would have to give up their blue uniforms, similar to those worn by current LAPD officers, because of concerns about the department’s image and liability. Beginning in September, the department planned to require the retired officer…

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Board of Governors is desperate. As they see the ratings for the venerable Oscar telecast get lower each year -- they are now trying any gimmick to revive their traditional Awards Show meets Variety Show format. The first blow was the major rule change for "Best Picture" going from five nominees to ten. This is an attempt to please the major studios and critics who feel that the more commercially successful films are rarely nominated. Perhaps this is the snobbery of the Academy voter. I am one too, but I vote on the merits in each category and I hope that the majority of Academy members do the same. The next shoe to…

Good day folks, I'm currently working on a F1 Doco about the legendary driver Ayrton Senna and I would greatly appreciate the groups help. We need to know if there is anyone who has any quality archive recordings of INTERIOR F1 cars, preferably 1988 Honda engined Mclaren with a view to possibly being used to add dramatic impact to driving sequences in the film. I was recently allowed the great privalige of recording his original 1988 MP4/4 at Silverstone circuit recently I managed to get some great surround FX but sadly as they were protecting the car for the Goodwood Historic Festival of Speed this weekend we only got a few blasts (3 gears) up and down a sho…

Well, the analog TV stations are gone around here (SF), and the DTV stations have made their moves. Qualcomm's FLo-TV etc is supposed to have fired up. I went to the shop today and turned on all my wirelesses to see if anyone new was home. And there was. On Lectro 28 there was a BIG wad 'o something at the lower end of the block that hadn't been there before, but it wasn't so big that a small adjustment got me away from it. A block 27 radio was still clear. Other more legal blocks were unchanged. So far so good. Philip Perkins

Here is an article from Dailey Variety: Why the film biz still has far to go Even with SAG's resolve, the future is uncertain By JONATHAN HANDEL With the SAG contract ratified, will the film business finally get back to normal? Unfortunately, no. Although we'll see a brief spike in production, the business we once knew may never reappear in its previous form. Here's why: Labor unrest: It's not going to end. The 2011 negotiations start within 18 months, a scant period of relative peace, then it's off to the races again. Production could stop in spring 2011, as it has in the past as the biz awaits the outcome of contract negotiations, meaning that script acq…

Hi Everyone, Well, now that the great transition has largely occurred, I am curious as to whether the reality of frequency usage in Los Angeles correlates with the research I did on FCC sites and other places as to what it SHOULD look like now. I am wondering what those of you who have more sophisticated scanners than I possess are now finding in the UHF band in different areas around LA county. To put the findings in terms of Lectro Blocks, the very best should be 19 and 20. What else looks good to the rest of you? I am currently heavy in Bl. 28 and I also have some Lectros in 25. I'm thinking of re-freqing more units into Block 25 which seems like it is better…

Hello everyone, Many of you knew David Smith, boom operator, from his work in film and television production, and that he passed away suddenly in October 2008. And, as is commonly known, and to the delight of many, many people, that he was an accomplished artist. Dave produced some superb cartoons, paintings, pencil and ink drawings, and was a phenomenal guitar player. I, and some of Dave’s good friends are organizing a golf tournament to be held in June 2009 in Solana Beach, CA. We are holding this event in order to raise money to provide art supplies to young artists in his hometown of Oceanside and who are underprivileged and in need of assistance. We’d like …

* The Wall Street Journal * JUNE 12, 2009 Lawmakers Make Noise About Loud Commercials By FAWN JOHNSON Some members of Congress want broadcasters to turn down the volume on television commercials. A bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D., Calif.) would require the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to "preclude commercials from being broadcast at louder volumes than the program material they accompany." Broadcasters say they are addressing the problem already. "The major television broadcast networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, are each, individually, implementing policies that attempt to control loud commercials," said David Donovan, pr…

I believe this will happen sooner than four years from now: Nokia has claimed that by 2013 it could become possible to recharge your phone from the ambient electromagnetic radiation (AER) emitted by Wi-Fi transmitters, mobile phone antennae and TV masts. http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/06/10/nokia_aer/ I also predict we will be powering our carts in similar ways soon. This of course collides with my occasional rant here in regards to additional "ambient electromagnetic radiation" and it's possible unhealthy side effects.

Just because I thought it would be interesting to the folks here, scientist have created an acoustic black hole using a Bose Einstein condensate. http://science.slashdot.org/story/09/06/10/1544246/First-Acoustic-Black-Hole-Created?from=rss I love being a nerd. Now I wonder how long it'll take until Sound Devices figures out a way to use it as a noise reducer.
