Professional sound mixer and Editor-In-Chief at Wav.Report Jared Elkin took a ride with us to chat about his experience in sound, the state of the industry, gear and anecdotes. I hope you find it interesting, perhaps useful. If you can take a 20 minute break, it's always a good thing to get perspective from other sound mixers. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsdI6n1HwmU

Hi everybody, I'm working on a callsheet app with a very different premise: just display the callsheet on your screen. I need testers but for the moment there are specific requirements: - You're on Android - You use Gmail or Microsoft (outlook, hotmail, etc) to receive your callsheets - You're comfortable letting an app search your email for today's callsheet (no data is ever transferred off the device) If you're interested, you can check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newendian.android.opencallsheet Best, James

This scares the heck out of me. What if they recorded only the harmonics of the attack. Permanent hearing loss or permanent tinnitus would take away the most important tool I own. Egad!!!! permanent

Collateral Damage & Such. As most of you know I was hit with a heart attack back in April this year. It took it's toll to be sure on many levels. It affected my ability to operate Production Sound Solutions in Ft. Lauderdale. That along with the loss of film incentive packages and the booming of Atlanta as the hot local market causing many local mixers to relocate there in search of more work. The point is that those issues combined have made me take a long hard look at keeping the shop operational. Sadly and with a great deal of remorse I have officially closed the shop as of Aug 1, 2019. There will be more details on sales of remaining stock and other items of …

The 2 person sound crew is making a comeback thanks to the International. "Comeback Trail" (no joke) staring Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones is coming to New Mexico to start shooting next week. Producers have figured out they can come to NM and by-pass the ASA contract and sign "One Off's". Not only do they get reduced crew at reduced rates they also get the local rebates. There are eleven producers listed on iMDB, no downsizing there. This is the second time I know of a major production doing this. The other film was Hell or High Water. Now that the International has made this a standard for "One Off's " why would any othe…

From Deadline Hollywood: Cinema’s Digital Takeover: The Decline And Fall Of Film As We Have Known It Digital cinema has overtaken film a lot sooner than many people might have predicted before Avatar was released, but it was probably inevitable. At latest count almost two-thirds of all domestic screens used digital projectors by the beginning of the year. That’s 25,570 screens out of a total 39,641 or 64.5%, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Roughly half — 12,620 — of those digital screens were equipped to show movies in 3D and 244 of those were IMAX installations. The total of individual theaters was almost 5,800, and 3,028 of thos…

Live and learn, there are no minimum staffing requirements in the IA contract. The IA can sign a one off contract with anything the Producer wants in it.

When I heard Heartbreak Hotel, I knew what I wanted to do in life. It was as plain as day. All I wanted to do in the world was to be able to play and sound like that. Everyone else wanted to be Elvis, I wanted to be Scotty. ... Keith Richards Scotty left the road and moved to Nashville where he built Music City Recorders and got more in to engineering than guitar playing. I act plus a found this website just filled w/ Elvis facts plus a studio section, discography, his guitar and lots of pictures http://www.scottymoore.net/

This was a concert at Vanderbilt University in 1987 that was part of a Cinemax Special. Guests included Mark Knopfler, Emmy Lou Harris, The Everly Brothers, Willie and Waylon, Micheal McDonald and a band of Nashville's best musicians. I tried to get in but I was not Music City royalty, so no seat for me. Enjoy.

https://nyti.ms/2VjVWjA Researchers have sent a very tiny simulated atom back in time a fraction of a second, using a small public quantum computer. In other words, while you can't know both its velocity and the location at the same time, they've managed to compute how a wave function "got here" and reverse both to where it started. While complexity increases geometrically, a much larger future computer could conceivably scale this up. Yes, it was only a few qubits, on a tiny slice of IBM's smallest quantum computer. But consider how far binary computers have come in the past fifty years... [Please forgive the whimsical topic line. This is …

I'm a DC-based A1 for a lot of talking head events so I couldn't help but over analyze last night's technical difficulties: https://mobile.reuters.com/video/2019/06/27/technical-issue-interrupts-democratic-de?videoId=567374862&videoChannel=117849 Structurally I'm confident the NBC truck was outside with ISO mic feeds, and from the sound of it the problem was isolated to the house. House mixers have been an issue for numerous debates in the 2015 cycle frequently resulting in subtle feedback. This was a missed cue to drop the previous moderators mics in the house, but I have been running through scenarios in my head of why it was so difficult to do: The 3…
