Damn! I was surfing the web this morning and for some reason looked up Ray on imdb and found that he passed away last Christmas. I was just an acquaintence but my dealing with him was always so positive, I never felt like a stranger. If you ever crossed paths with him I expect you felt the same way. Ray, John Mosely and Neil Stone all generously extended a helping hand to me beyond our commercial relationships. They all are gone much too soon and I will miss them - but I am better for having met them. Rob Braxton

I am hoping we will be joined by many of our friends and associates who live outside the United States. I am sure the time difference accounts for some of the lack of presence here at this time. I specifically dislike referring to people as being from "foreign" countries as it is all too typical of the American way to just assume that the apparent or not so apparent differences are somehow threatening. Maybe I am just an idealist but I have always found that traveling (and I have traveled all over the world since the age of 8 years old) helps us embrace these differences. I also feel that in some small way, participation in an Internet based Discussion Group by people fro…

Dear friends, As most of you know, our dear friend Bob Gravenor moved to Spain last year after being a sound mixer in Los Angeles for many years. Bob has worked on many features since the 70's and on commericals for the last 15 or 20 years, which is where I had the good fortune to meet him. He has also served as president of IATSE Local 695, which is the sound and video local, and was on the board of directors of CAS. As you all know, Bob is a kind man and loving friend. Three weeks ago, Bob suffered massive liver failure and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital in Valencia, Spain.  His son, Misha, quickly flew to Spain to be with him.  Bob was going in and …

This old dog needs some new tricks. From grease pencil marks on 1/4" to DAT to time code on one track of a mini disc or cd, there have been so many different systems used. Each way had it's pluses and minuses. Try to jog a DAT to find that perfect "in" mark... For non-sync playback I've lately been using Courtney Goodin's Widget. It's simple and full of utilities like the ability to place cue points and easily add start beeps. Although the time code can be read and even fed to a monitor, It cannot be stripped out to a slate. So... I would love to hear what others are using these days (especially on HD shoots). Thanks, Bruce Perlman

One of the good things for me running this Discussion Group with the forum software from Simple Machines (this is true with other software as well) is the statistics report that is available. Under "stats" I can see who has been contributing, what topics have a lot of attention and which hold very little interest for our members. By studying these stats I hope to be able to dynamically moderate this Group in much the same way a moderator would deal with a group of REAL people in a real room (I think you know what I mean). That brings me back to the subject of WHO are our members (and I'm not back on my original thread about nicknames and handles, I'm well over that). …

Looking for a boomman in LA, late August

I am doing a little Mexican movie in LA for four weeks starting the end of August. Fun but not too lucrative<g>. Not free either! My normal boom is in Arizona and I'd like to talk to any Local #695 utilities who would like to "bump up." This is NOT a union picture, so I am not adverse to working with non-union boom ops, but I'd like to offer it to my bros and sis first. Contact me off list if you'd like to know more.

UPS

Just so that all know, UPS arbitrarily assesed an extra "hadling fee" on a Pelican 1600 shipper that I sent out because it wasn't in a cardboard box. FedEx will accept these cases as-is understanding that an ATA approved shipping case doesn't need any carboard around it. Stupid UPS!

Just a warning: I updated one of my Macs with the recently released OS update 10.4.7 and it has broken the Mail app. POP accounts fail to retrieve new mail. I have not discovered a fix yet. The Mac I updated is a new black Mac Book (Intel). - JW

I know this is a sensitive issue for some but a good friend of mine who is presently doing documentary-style work with the Cousteau group needs some guidlines on what mixers are getting paid and what the basic equipment package is going for. My friend had to retire from the regular union boomwork he had done for over 15 years (due to back injuries and a double hip replacement) but has now returned to do some mixing jobs without benefit of a union contract scale wage. The work, however, is what Gary loves to do, explorations, oceanographic adventures and so forth. If anyone here could put forth some numbers it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe just a range of pay per…

My sound mixer friend (NBC'S DATE LINES WEST COAST MIXER) passed away on sunday. here is what happened. last month he went to the doctor with a complanit about his stomache. the doctor gave him some meds and sent him on his way. 2 weeks later he went to the doctor again saying the meds are not helping, so the doctor took a closer look the same day they had emergency surgery and removed a large tumor stuck in his intestine. while in there they discovered his entire internal organs had cancer 4th stage the worst kind and gave him 6 months to live. he lasted 3 weeks after that surgery. I just saw him in the shop a month before that, I was on the phone and another c…

We have had our first instance of what I consider bad behavior in this group wherein a simple question asked was used by one of our members to vent on another issue. When there is the desire to subvert a topic in order to push one's own agenda (and we are all guilty of this at one time or another), I suggest stepping back and thinking about whether you would post such a comment under a new and appropriate topic heading, something like: I HATE THAT MACHINE (and the company that made itg screwed me over). Then, everyone who wants to could chime in with their experiences, good or bad, or not. A little bit of self-moderation could be a good thing. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Darren has joined our group and should be posting some interesting pictures of his sound cart. Darren's main recording setup is based around Metacorder and the MOTU Traveler which he has used on several projects. Hopefully Darren will post some observations, experiences and conclusions using this sort of setup. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Regarding the order of posts displayed, I apologize for messing around with this and affecting everyone's settings. To clarify at this point, any member here, once logged in, can set things the way they want it to be by selecting "Profile" and changing some settings. When you have the settings for your Profile displayed, in the sidebar go to "Look and Layout", UN-check "Show most recent posts at top" (if it is checked), click on "Change Profile" button in lower right corner and you should now have posts in proper order. Regards, Jeff Wexler

There are some things that require a re-install of the software that forms the backbone of this forum, so it may be necessary to take it down later this evening. I apologize for the possible inconvenience (and the problems are probably all my fault anyway since I really am not so sure footed in these areas). Regards, Jeff Wexler
