I know this is a sensitive issue for some but a good friend of mine who is presently doing documentary-style work with the Cousteau group needs some guidlines on what mixers are getting paid and what the basic equipment package is going for. My friend had to retire from the regular union boomwork he had done for over 15 years (due to back injuries and a double hip replacement) but has now returned to do some mixing jobs without benefit of a union contract scale wage. The work, however, is what Gary loves to do, explorations, oceanographic adventures and so forth. If anyone here could put forth some numbers it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe just a range of pay per…

My sound mixer friend (NBC'S DATE LINES WEST COAST MIXER) passed away on sunday. here is what happened. last month he went to the doctor with a complanit about his stomache. the doctor gave him some meds and sent him on his way. 2 weeks later he went to the doctor again saying the meds are not helping, so the doctor took a closer look the same day they had emergency surgery and removed a large tumor stuck in his intestine. while in there they discovered his entire internal organs had cancer 4th stage the worst kind and gave him 6 months to live. he lasted 3 weeks after that surgery. I just saw him in the shop a month before that, I was on the phone and another c…

We have had our first instance of what I consider bad behavior in this group wherein a simple question asked was used by one of our members to vent on another issue. When there is the desire to subvert a topic in order to push one's own agenda (and we are all guilty of this at one time or another), I suggest stepping back and thinking about whether you would post such a comment under a new and appropriate topic heading, something like: I HATE THAT MACHINE (and the company that made itg screwed me over). Then, everyone who wants to could chime in with their experiences, good or bad, or not. A little bit of self-moderation could be a good thing. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Darren has joined our group and should be posting some interesting pictures of his sound cart. Darren's main recording setup is based around Metacorder and the MOTU Traveler which he has used on several projects. Hopefully Darren will post some observations, experiences and conclusions using this sort of setup. Regards, Jeff Wexler

hi everyone, i'm landing in LA on 20th April and that's because of flight availability. I need to spend upto 23rd in LA and i'll take a bus or hitch a ride to Las Vegas for NAB. I will need a place to stay in LA. I have no fixed itinerary for after NAB, which is another thing. As of now, I'm thinking only about the initial few days before i get to NAB. Any ideas or assistance is welcome! -vin

Regarding the order of posts displayed, I apologize for messing around with this and affecting everyone's settings. To clarify at this point, any member here, once logged in, can set things the way they want it to be by selecting "Profile" and changing some settings. When you have the settings for your Profile displayed, in the sidebar go to "Look and Layout", UN-check "Show most recent posts at top" (if it is checked), click on "Change Profile" button in lower right corner and you should now have posts in proper order. Regards, Jeff Wexler

There are some things that require a re-install of the software that forms the backbone of this forum, so it may be necessary to take it down later this evening. I apologize for the possible inconvenience (and the problems are probably all my fault anyway since I really am not so sure footed in these areas). Regards, Jeff Wexler

There are things I like about the new look of the forum, just a little bit cleaner, but functionally there seems to be some differences I do not like. The original style had a function button to "Reply with Quote" and this new template is missing that. You can still quote posts in your reply but it looks as if you have to cut and past and use the "Insert Quote" botton (second to the last above the compose post text area). We'll see if this is really an issue or not. Many people on newsgroups and forums like this (and even including normal email) do not really know how to use quoting properly anyway. So, let's see how it goes (and if need be, I will go back to the ol…

Anyone here who is a r.a.m.p.s. newsgroup participant is painfully aware of the conflicts and controversy that seem to plague that group with regards to participation by equipment manufacturers, dealers and anyone else who could be viewed as having the wrong agenda for our "pure" newsgroup. I have my own personal feelings about all of this but I would like some feedback from members here regarding whether equipment companies (and possibly dealers) should be welcome in this group. None of those people have posted here, yet, but I am considering putting up a section, a board, specifically to invite the participation of equipment companies, vendors and dealers. This would no…

The suggestion has come from Oleg to post personal pictures so that the rest of us can put a face to the name. This might be something that appeals to some but would rather be avoided by others... so, feel free to do as you please. I would be happy to see the faces of any of our members here (they can be posted anywhere but the Images of Interest would be a good place). Since he made the suggeston, and so he doesn't have to, I will post Oleg's picture. Regards, Jeff Wexler

If you have never been before and are so "fortunate" to be not working, NAB is a terrific event with more equipment on show under one roof (actually, several) and well worth effort. Go to www.nabshow.com for information. Many product introductions happen at NAB where companies show off new equipment. The new stuff is sometimes just non-working mock-ups that give us a look into what may be available in the future, but often the products shown are full production models that are shipping right after NAB. I saw the first Deva at NAB and that was probably 10 years ago. It was a funny looking little black box sitting on a pedestal with a cable coming out the back leading t…

The general membership of the I.A.T.S.E. has voted to accept the new contract. I am posting the article from the L.A. Times here for those who do not have access to the news. The article is not entirely accurate regarding the objections raised by the locals to the proposed contract, but the statements attributed to the International President, Tom Short, are truly astounding. Hollywood Craft Workers OK Deal By Richard Verrier, Times Staff Writer March 10, 2006 Hollywood's craft workers overwhelmingly approved a new three-year contract Thursday that calls for modest wage and benefit increases. More than two-thirds of voting members endorsed the contract, which c…

Haskell Wexler has completed his documentary called "Who Needs Sleep?" which deals with the chronic long hours in the Entertainment Industry. The movie ends up saying a lot about our uniquely American cultural attitude towards work, making a living (and still having a life), insights into how people from other countries and other cultures seal with these issues, health and safety, and most importantly our families. This screening is in L.A., I know, so it really only applies to those who are local. The movie should be widely available when there is general distribution. April 4, 2006 starting at 7PM at 135 Doheny Dr. in Beverly Hills. RSVP for this event at: w…

I was thinking about putting up a board for people to post Want-To-Buy and Want-To-Sell items here. It would be out of the way, no one has to spend anytime there if they don't want to, and I will not be providing ANY assistance as far as sales go (this will not become an Audio EBay lite for sure). It probably would not even be "classified" as in indexed or categorized, just a place to post buying and selling. What does anybody think? Regards, Jeff Wexler

Nice job, sweetie... I am not happy about being a "web widow" but I guess it's just another thing I will have to put up with. Oh, and by the way, next time you post a bunch of my photos for everyone else's enjoyment, please give me some credit. All kidding aside, you have done a terrific job providing a forum for all your sound people. See you soon (and don't forget it's "sushi night" and we're going out tonight. Regards, Carol Wexler

Welcome to our 100th registered user! I wanted to reach this milestone today so I actually had to get my wife to register... I don't think she will participate beyond the simple act of registering but she has been participating in the group already (because all of the pictures from 'An Officer and a Gentleman" were taken by her --- she used to be a unit still photographer having worked on many fine films several years ago). Regards, Jeff Wexler

I have been trying to get most recent posts to display at the top so we don't have to scroll through everything from the beginning, and I think the easiest thing I've found is to use the Recent Posts list at the bottom of the Forum Boards. Selecting the heading (which is in brackets) where the most recent post is will take you right to it. I think I will increase the number of Recent Posts in the list. I want this to be as easy and hassle free as possible. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I will post some more images which may be of interest to others here. It is fairly easy to do the only requirement is that the image file size not be too large. What you do is start a new topic in the Images of Interest board, give it a Subject title and then down at the bottom where it says Additional Options, you can select an image and and add it a an attachment. There was some interest awhile back for Sound Cart pictures and also some of the custom windscreens people have done. I think any pictures from the set, interesting locations, people doing challenging work or just having a good time... it's all good Regards, Jeff Wexler
