Dear NAB Show Community, The COVID-19 pandemic has created a truly unprecedented situation around the world. Our thoughts are with those who have been directly affected by the virus, and all of those who are struggling with the ramifications of this global health crisis. At the National Association of Broadcasters, we believe it is our responsibility to help stop the spread of COVID-19, and put the health and safety of our show community first. In the week since announcing that we will not move forward with the NAB Show in April, the landscape has c…

The EDD didn't record today's UI webinar, but I did. PM me if you want me to send you the file. There was some good info but many many questions unanswered. My main takeaway--you will have to wait for them to get to you individually to get real clarification of your status and benes if you aren't all-W2-income. The meeting was inundated with chat questions about mixed W2-1099-residual etc income, among other issues. The EDD folks were apologetic but they are overloaded. BTW, the phone-in hours are only 8a--12 p for now.

The music that spoke to me the most seemed to come from the triangle of Memphis, Nashville and Muscle Shoals. Jimmy Johnson was one of the originators of what came to known as the Muscle Shoals Sound. They used to get paid $25 per completed and everyone is happy side. He was the rhythm guitar player and he would find a place to add a little something that would just go to the root of the song. He was often the engineer and was the producer of record for the Rolling Stones. As musicians it wasn't ever about them, It was always about the song. It’s being reported our good friend and frequent contributor Jay Rose has passed away. I’m not sure of the details and really they don’t matter. He was an outstanding master of sound for picture and shared his knowledge freely and kindly. My condolences to his family and many friends. CrewC

I suspect that many of you have come across Howard Kaufman in his role as New York's Lectrosonic tech expert and will have benefited from his expertise and generosity over the years: Howie is now desperately ill with a Stage 4 Glioblastoma and his family are fundraising via a GoFundMe page to help with his care. If you can spare a few bucks, please go here and donate. https://www.gofundme.com/f/howie039s-recovery?fbclid=IwAR31xyj2yFKYh4b7EUz5h4LZRfiVdA8PytZO257JqyUlHNbFIY_KFMOzy6c Thanks, John

I am not looking to start a political discussion here. I'm asking about what the real effect on the tax situation of what I think of as a typical JWS member will be of the new tax bill that seems likely to pass in the next few days. By typical I mean someone who is running a 1-person indie sound business, mostly as a location sound mixer using gear they own themselves, and who has many currently deductible small-business type tax expenses. I've read everything from dire warnings about the loss of any deductions for home office, tools, office supplies, advertising, travel, phone, mileage, continuing ed., etc etc to others saying that all that isn't true. What does an…

Now that NAB has cancelled, we will not be having the party on this date. We're waiting to see what NAB decides --- they may reschedule to later in the year in which case we will try to get the party going again. In any case, we will plan, of course, to do the party next year if that's the way it goes.

This mummy isn't a movie, but an actual mummified Egyptian priest from 3000 years ago. Researchers wheeled his remains into a CT scanner, mapped his vocal tract, and 3D-printed a replica of his throat and mouth. They bolted it to a compression horn driver, and claim it reproduces the guy's authentic voice. It makes a good story in today's NYTimes along with a brief audio sample and a link to the research paper in Nature. It's also only a story. The mechanism used to create "speech" -- a complex vowel waveform generated by a computer and controlled by a joystick, then sent through a few fixed low-Q resonators in the 3D-printed "mouth" -- is nothing…

My daughter Roxie wrote the story and libretto for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize winning opera p r i s m. The prize, post the premiere in NYC, got them a run at the magnificent Teatro Municipal in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Here's a pic from a singer's POV during soundcheck in the hall. The composer, Ellen Reid is in white in the center aisle, and Roxie is seated back row right. It's been quite an experience, tremendous ovations and support from the locals. Next, the Kennedy Center in March '20.

My dear friend and fellow worker, Don Coufal, passed away this morning. Don was so much a part of my life having spent over half my life with him over the last 40+ years --- we did 67 movies together, countless commercials, co-founded Northstar Media Sound Services. I owe so much of my career to Don's incredible talent, his unwavering commitment to our work together. So often when I was offered a job or someone was recommending me, they would always say "get Jeff-and-Don" like it was one entity, and in so many ways we were --- so different from eachother, our strengths and weaknesses, but so incredibly complimentary as a team, so much more than either of us individua…
