Tom Short Retired today. Here is the news from The Hollywood Reporter: For the first time in 14 years, IATSE has changed its leadership, with president Thomas Short retiring and fifth vp Matthew Loeb unanimously voted in to take over the reins. Short announced his retirement, as expected, at the group's annual midsummer general executive board meeting in San Diego. "As hard as it is for me to believe that this time has come, I am now prepared to move on," Short said. "I am not leaving for political reasons or for health reasons but rather because I have learned that life is short and there is a great deal that I have yet to experience and enjoy." Although …

Variety: SAG, AMPTP wrap session Sides agree results should be kept private By CYNTHIA LITTLETON The Screen Actors Guild has wrapped its Wednesday sidebar session with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. There was no immediate word about the substance of meeting. AMPTP issued a statement shortly after 6 p.m. asserting that "both parties agreed that the contents of the meeting should be kept private." Majors also said that no further meetings have been skedded. AMPTP and SAG have been in a stalemate for more than a week, ever since the majors handed SAG what it terms its final offer for a new three-year contract. It's expected that AMPTP bras…

The Roller Coaster ride continues: Variety SAG, studios agree to meet Guild may be willing to end delay By DAVE MCNARY In a sign that SAG may be willing to step out of stall mode, negotiators for the guild and the majors have agreed to a meeting on Wednesday. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced Tuesday that SAG's negotiators have requested a "sidebar" meeting with the AMPTP involving a small group of people from each side. "Out of respect for the SAG membership, the AMPTP has agreed to the meeting but has made it clear that the meeting will be solely for the purpose of listening to whatever SAG has to say," the AMPTP said in a stat…

Hollywood reporter: as of 9:35PM ET SAG, AMPTP still talking Hours of negotiations could be sign deal is near By Leslie Simmons Hope for an early bombshell development in the standoff between SAG and the studios melted in the afternoon heat Thursday, as the two sides remained sequestered after more than four hours of meeting. The potential for a breakthrough development -- either SAG agreeing to take the studios' "final offer" to its membership for a vote or the guild flatly refusing it -- remained a possibility as the talks continued into their fifth hour. SAG officials delivered a roughly 30-minute formal response to the studios offer, an insider reported…

Daily Variety SAG officially rejects final offer Guild probably won't strike as studios go to work Dave McNary SAG's still not ready to close a deal with the majors -- signaling that the thesps' contract stalemate will linger on into the late summer. Guild on Thursday officially rejected the final offer by the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers on grounds that the pact falls short in such areas as new media and DVD residuals, along with product integration and force majeure protections. "Today's meeting demonstrated that SAG's Membership First contingent unreasonably expects to obtain more in these negotiations than directors, writers and ot…

Here's an ironic twist from The Hollywood Reporter: AFTRA pact brings hope in Toronto But local producers worry productions will leave town By Etan Vlessing TORONTO -- News of a deal between AFTRA and the major studios has fed optimism here that Hollywood producers will once again be greenlighting projects for production in Canada. "I think this is a very major move that clearly paints the way to SAG ending up with a deal that looks like the others that have been ratified," Toronto Film Studios president Ken Ferguson said Wednesday. Canadian studios, burnt by a Canadian actors strike and the Hollywood writers strike earlier this year, have been unnerved by …

This just in from from Variety: Studios sweeten SAG offer August 15 deadline set by majors By Dave McNary In a bid to nudge SAG toward cutting a deal, the majors have added a sweetener to their final offer on the condition that the guild ratify the deal by Aug. 15. Insiders say the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers has told SAG leaders that the pay increases offered in the deal would be retroactive to July 1 -- the date SAG's previous feature-primetime deal expired -- if the guild can get it ratified by its 120,000 members by Aug. 15. News of the sweetener emerged Wednesday, a day before the Screen Actors Guild's set to officially respond t…

BREAKING: VARIETY AFTRA accepts deal Members of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists have ratified the union's primetime deal, spurning SAG's avid campaigning to vote down the contract. AFTRA said 62% of those voting supported the deal. Announcement came Tuesday evening following a month of bitter battling between the thesp unions. The ratification was not a surprise due to the faltering economy and the lingering impact of the 100-day WGA strike. Terms in the AFTRA pact mirror those in the contracts signed by the WGA and DGA, along with the majors' final offer to SAG. The results represent a slap to SAG leadership, which has held out for a b…

From Daily Variety: SAG to respond to offer by Thursday Voting results for AFTRA expected tonight By Dave McNary While Hollywood waiting anxiously for the results of AFTRA's ratification vote, SAG's agreed to deliver its official response Thursday afternoon to the majors' final offer to the guild. AFTRA's expected to announce the voting on its deal as early as this evening. SAG's campaigned vigorously against the AFTRA pact, which contains terms matching the congloms' final offer to SAG. SAG's hoping that a defeat of the AFTRA deal will give it the increased leverage it needs to obtain better terms. Ballots went out to all 70,000 AFTRA members, including 44,000 …

Daily Variety's Dave McNary writes: Guild, AMPTP remain at loggerheads for now With the town remaining unsettled over a potential strike, the stalemate between SAG and the major studios will stay in place until next week. The two sides met for four hours Wednesday afternoon in a session set up for SAG to ask questions about the congloms' final offer, two days after the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers pulled the plug on further negotiations. "SAG asked for more time to study our final offer and indicated it will contact the producers on Monday." the AMPTP said. "We remain hopeful that SAG will advise that it is accepting our final offer. No fur…

Happy July 4th to all! I just heard from Scott Wood of Digidesign, in Beijing who tells me: "I've been the principle workflow designer and will be on site testing and training their staff on "camera to digital cinema master" workflow training at the massive new 1.3M square foot China Film Group facility North of Beijing, which opens later this month. Think “digital filmâ€ meets “Chinese manufacturingâ€ meets “massive funding.â€ It is likely now the largest media workflow center in the world, designed to put out 80 feature films and 200 TV movies each year. These guys seriously invested in file based workflow, from acquisition to delivery." Here is what C…

George Carlin, the acerbic, Grammy-winning comedian whose career spanned more than 50 years, died of heart failure Sunday evening after being admitted to the hospital complaining of chest pains, his spokesman said. He was 71. This is really sad... one of the most unique and talented people ever ... his take on our language (and not just the 7 dirty words), our society and what it means to be a human being. I will really miss him. - Jeff Wexler

A guy I know started a new blog called Production War Stories, for anonymous recounting of our more "interesting" gigs. His rules: Email your production horror/adventure/comedies, but please bear this in mind: Production, overall, is a small community, and this is no forum to blast anyone in. So PLEASE… 1.) Don't include names. 2.) Don't tell me what the brand was/is. 3.) If you wish to change your name, please do so IN THE EMAIL YOU SEND. Could be a fun place to vent/commiserate: http://productionwarstories.blogspot.com/ -Christian

Not to shabby but, and there's always a "but", the individual threads on the main board are a bit too small. The "Icon Homage" to Apple is cute if not a bit commercial. Glad the computer company was not named "Asparagus". Eric
