I am asking that those members that feel they can afford it to donate a small amount of money to help me with the costs of maintaining this Discussion Group site and CinemaSound. I have been able to manage on my own for the last 5 years to keep these sites up and running, upgrading the software that powers this forum, upgrading my server accounts, routine and some not so routine maintenance, but I could use some help now. I am asking for a donation of $10.00 (US) on a yearly basis to keep all this going. This is totally voluntary and no one should fear that either of these great sites will be taken down if no one donates. I am asking for $10.00 but any amount will be ap…

We are celebrating the 16th anniversary of the JWSOUND site which continues to be a vibrant and highly popular resource for our sound community. I have seldom asked for donations to support this site , over the years there have been so many spontaneous and generous unsolicited donations it has been a real help in running the site. At this time I am asking for donations if you are able to as the expense of running the site has increased (hasn't everything except our wages!) I have never strived to monetize this site as many other sites have and there has been over the years substantial support from the paid advertising banners running on the site. Many of the companies tha…

My question is not a statement for or against gun control but I do ask this... Do events like the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school, not to mention shootings that preceded it, change anybody's mind about gun policy? Is there anyone calling for new gun policy today who was not calling for it two days ago? I'm genuinely curious. Guns, politics, evolution, abortion, climate change, corporate control of elections, whatever... when we've chosen sides, do we ever switch? Do words, information and external events ever alter our opinions or does that data only get filtered in a way so as to reinforce existing opinion? How does group opinion evolve?

Not sure if this topic has ben discussed on this forum but I have to vent - I have been member of IATSE local 695 for the past 7 years. I have paid my quarterly dues on time and have worked hard to accrue my hours to be eligible for my insurance benefits. I recently received a letter from MPI Health Plan stating that as of January 1, 2013, participants will have to pay a premium for their dependents. "For Participants with 1 dependent, the premium is $25 per month, paid quarterly, semi-annually or annually." "For Participants with 2 or more dependents, the premium is $50 per month, paid quarterly, semi-annually or annually." So for someone like me w…

Zaxcom has just announced a new wireless transmitter they're calling the "ZHD". The press release is on the Zaxcom website but I have posted here as well. POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. — April 13, 2016 — Zaxcom today announced their latest line of digital recording wireless transmitters with a brand new modulation, Zaxcom High Density (ZHD). ZHD modulation allows for up to 10 channels of wireless to be operated in one MHz of frequency spectrum space. Like other Zaxcom Digital Wireless transmitters, the new ZHD models, the TRXLT3, TRXLA3 and TRX743 are 100% digital, have built-in backup recording with timecode, NeverClip™ for superior dynamic range and are fully encrypted. …

The annual mixer mixer takes place during the NAB conference on Tuesday April 17 at the Satay Grille in Las Vegas: http://sataylasvegas.com/Location.html If you plan to attend, please fill out this brief RSVP form so we can establish an accurate guest count and order enough food: http://bit.ly/yHt6G9 RSVPs to the JWS forum (ie- this discussion thread) do not count and will not reserve a space for you at the party. Note that there is a door charge that gets you access to a buffet and friends. Drinks are extra (but reasonable). In the past, the cost has been far under $30. A bargain. We'll know this year's price later, but expect it to be about the …

So there is a mandatory water restriction in california. Heres a little something the governer should know. each person uses between 80-100 gallons a day on average. They are requiring 25% less usage. None of my business what they eat in california, but how's about putting restrictions on how much cattle is raised and slaughtered in cali. Or how many hamburgers are allowed to be eaten. 1 hamburger = 650 gallons of water. 1 pound of beef = 2500 gallons of water. Hard to believe, but totally verified. So lets say they reduce beef consumption and make that mandatory. That would be a reduction of 600% for every hamburger raised and slaughtere…

JWS readers can still get a Tuna T (accept no subs) simply by sending --size-- and --address-- to larryf@lectrosonics.com. Pictures of Tuna T's in far off, exotic locations such as New Jersey, appreciated. Best, Larry F Lectro

-UPDATE- This thread is open again. I will be watching this carefully but I am willing to have it play out here on JWSOUND. No one should feel any obligation to participate in this as it is probably still preferable that this issue be resolved between the two principle parties, privately and not on a public forum. It has already been established that the two people involved know eachother and have been in contact personally and privately, so there is the hope that this will be resolved. If at such time I am privy to the resolution or information to the voracity of the claims, I will post it here. - original post edited by administrator - Justin Blakely liv…

February 6, 1922 - December 27, 2015 It is with great sadness that I have to report that my father, Haskell Wexler, has died. Pop died peacefully in his sleep, Sunday, December 27th, 2015. Accepting the Academy Award in 1967, Pop said: "I hope we can use our art for peace and for love". An amazing life has ended but his lifelong commitment to fight the good fight, for peace, for all humanity, will carry on.

I am a production mixer and I teach. I am literally in a conversation at this moment about pulling the plug on all student production. I'd like your thoughts about this. (I am in favor of shutting down).

Today i got an unexpected phone call from Don at Loon Audio. Which is funny when you think of how in the last year you had to call him about 5-6 times a day to maybe just maybe hear him pick up just once. And now he's calling me out of the blue, oh have the tides have turned. He was calling to check on all of his poles he had sold in the last year. He apologized again for his here or there responses, and was proud to say he has gotten his shop back up to speed. He moved to CA but then his business took a tumble and he packed up and headed back to Montana to his old shop. Hes now gotten back up to speed and is ready to start pushing out his great product again. …

http://www.slashfilm.com/interstellar-sound-issues/ “The sound mix is my favorite part of the process,” Nolan told Entertainment Weekly. “Your biggest creative decisions have been made—the shoot, the cut of the film—and you’re really in there putting the finishing touches on things or exploring different possibilities. It’s a time of pure imagination, where you can just play.” Maybe he’s just playing too much. Seeing this at TCL Imax tomorrow, hoping that this is just a tech issue. Anybody on this board have a hand in the final mix and want to shed some light on this?

This is an issue that I've been hearing about (in UK), particularly in commercials. A lo-rent scratch track is sent to camera, often via radio link, ew300 etc, to facilitate a quick off-line edit; and this audio ends up making it through to the final edit. We supply the files to the DIT, but they never get looked at. I recently heard about a case whereby the scratch track was actually sent off to be cleaned up by a post-facility. The repercussions of this are immediately obvious. More importantly, the poor sound mixer is made to be the scapegoat, even if he later points out the problem. What can be done about this? So many jobs are completed every day. Even if 1% of …

The original suggestion for this luncheon, coming from Michael Miramontes, was supposed to be a luncheon get together for the Los Angeles based sound people, similar to the annual R.A.M.P.S. get together in Las Vegas at NAB. It was perfectly proper for Michael to propose such a gathering and I appreciate the effort he has put in to organize this. What is not appreciated, by me and I'm sure lots of other members here, is that this get together has become an EVENT, sponsored by one of our dealers, Professional Sound Services in New York. Our annual R.A.M.P.S. party has never been sponsored by anyone --- it's "sponsor" has always been R.A.M.P.S. Newsgroup and as recently as …

Sincere condolences, USA. If you're looking for places to emigrate to, we still have a decent infrastructure here in Germany for receiving a good number of refugees. Why not spend the next four years abroad and then go back to rebuild?

Anybody getting injured? I've been in chronic pain for awhile now in my right shoulder and back. A Physical Therapist friend finally helped diagnose some shoulder blade discomfort to an issue with my neck and a Chiropracter has helped out with that a bit but the shoulder problem is lingering(I got ice on it now, as per the physical therapists instructions but I'm pretty sure I've been working with "injuries" for a long time now and it's been affecting my performance "at work". ...anyone else out there working injured? I found a good clay based ice pack at cvs for 14.99 but other than that, not sure what I should really be doing. I have freelancers insurance …

I am investigating ways to make changes to this particular section on JWSOUND. The hope would be that I could make some minor changes, just to that specific section, that would help avoid or minimize some of the uncomfortable things that have occurred there over the years. The simplest thing I can do, right now, is to make it a Moderated section. This will create a little delay with new posts and it will be a little bit more work for me, but it could provide the chance to vet the seller and their post before it goes public. Self-policing and common sense have kept the section functioning very nicely for the most part and for that I am very grateful. It may well be th…

At the moment the referendum is very close, with LEAVE a bit ahead. What will this mean for UK soundies and makers of sound gear, do you think?
