Not sure what's happening, but we are current watching NBC's highly touted and promoted "Peter Pan" on the telly. It is a LIVE broadcast, and I am watching via an attic-mounted HD antenna from the local NBC affiliate, WXIA, with a rather saavy engineering department. The sound (talent mics, music, efx, and mix) is PERFECT, but it is rather out of sync... quite a bit, especially from an off-the-air signal. Is it possible that this is being lip-synced to a canned / taped soundtrack ? MF

Michael Moore's latest documentary "Capitalism: A Love Story", has run into trouble in attempts to give out free tickets to Unions. The American Federation of Teachers has turned them down because Moore didn't hire any members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. "Michael Moore and one of our sister unions, IATSE, are in discussions about concerns the union has," the AFT told ABC News. "The AFT has decided against accepting tickets until those issues are resolved." Moore's agent, Ari Emanuel, seems to blame the IATSE for treating documentarians as "second-class filmmakers." "This is a Writers Guild, Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild f…

I just saw the Trew announcement that the automix in the 688 will now be a version of the Dugan system (the best in my opinion), and will be a part of the free firmware upgrade (3.0). Mighty cool, folks! Go Dan!

5 microphones haven been stolen from me from out of a studio in Cologne. It's probably a long shot posting it here, but who knows where these things turn up. The mic were taken sometime between Friday evening (7th November) and Monday morning (10th November). The studio was locked and alarm-secured and there were no break-in marks, whatever that means. If anyone sees one of the mice or gets them offered by someone in a dodgy deal, please let me know or the Police in Cologne. Of course, the mice were insured, but I want *my* mics back, not some new sterile mic! 1. Schoeps SuperCMIT (this was actually rented from Kortwich) serial number 0215 2. Schoeps CMIT (…

Wow, California is well was the place to shoot television commercials. Where is our State government when we really need them? This from the Los Angeles Times. Filming of state milk ads is heading abroad to save moola Unions are sour on The California Milk Advisory Board's plan to shoot "Happy Cow" commercials in New Zealand. By Richard Verrier The California Milk Advisory Board may have shot itself in the hoof. The board, which promotes the state's dairy farmers and is overseen by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is again preparing to film commercials touting California milk from California cows -- in New Zealand. In January, it plans to s…

Our good friend Jan lost her Mom early this morning. Here's her FB posting on her loss. Jan McLaughlin "My dear Mom passed quietly, gracefully about 2A. Read and re-read this precious thread many times today in peaceful if tearful yet somehow joyous anticipation of her forthcoming and now certain pain-free peace. Thank you for your comfort and support. Feeling blessed and devastated. Grateful. Grateful we are all at the farm where my howl of pain was gathered and held tight by the natural amphitheater and still-lush leaves of the woods across the creek. I love you all." Eric

Well, this news does not look good for us.... I see more trouble on the horizon, and a dark tunnel ahead.... with little to no light emitting from the other end.... http://money.cnn.com...x.htm?hpt=hp_t3 I think the "change in between the couch cushions" they speak of in the article is us.... Actually, it's all us.... I hope the Manufacturers figure something out, what, I don't know, but something... I am hoping we will not be left in shambles on the side of the road... It seems to be getting closer to having to carry some sort of "explanation sheet" to explain to producers why the 8 radio mics in various blocks don't seem to be able to find any …

Hello everyone, it's that time of year again for everyone to gather together and swap stories, tell jokes, and meet each other in person. Last year's turn out was such a huge success so I'm hoping we can make this an L.A. thing once a year. This is an open invite to everyone in our sound community so feel free to invite your peers. I'll be doing an evite again this year so that I can get a head count for the restaurant. They're requiring a certain dollar amount to be spent on food/drink so they can reserve our spot so PLEASE order some lunch and have a drink, or two, or three. If vendors want to support the event then by all means the more the merrier. I'll be …

Holy hot Damn! Documentary film "Unacknowledged" #1 on iTunes for 6 weeks and counting. 1 2

#1 on itunes since it's premiere. This was wholly financed by 5000 crowdfunding contributors. Very compelling, tightly put together, documentary. It doesn't let up. Thoughts on this? I just spent the Weekend with Dr. Steven Greer, this is his film... and life. Its looks as though, every - word - is - true. 30+ years of compiling documents, taking witness testimony, nurturing relationships, as a by product risking his life moving forward with the disclosure project. Id like to wish everyone here that tucks into this film, a very happy, long overdue shot of truth. Gather your friends and loved ones and share the moment. The tide of the media p…

I am not looking to start a political discussion here. I'm asking about what the real effect on the tax situation of what I think of as a typical JWS member will be of the new tax bill that seems likely to pass in the next few days. By typical I mean someone who is running a 1-person indie sound business, mostly as a location sound mixer using gear they own themselves, and who has many currently deductible small-business type tax expenses. I've read everything from dire warnings about the loss of any deductions for home office, tools, office supplies, advertising, travel, phone, mileage, continuing ed., etc etc to others saying that all that isn't true. What does an…

From AP this morning: No more place where you could get emergency resistors and badly made XLRs on a Sunday afternoon? Of course, they haven't really cared about parts for a long time. And I'm sure they found it harder and harder to hire kids who even knew what a resistor is. But I've got fond memories of sending my wife out to pick up a list of parts around the corner (while I stayed home packing the rest of my kit), so I could quickly solder the pad / mute / phantom supply / whatever that I'd need for the gig. On the other hand: So at least there still will be a few places where they don't have that particular resistor or XLR in stock...

I saw Birdman yesterday. A very challenging and fascinating movie. The sound design and soundtrack was superb. The dialogue, and there's some great dialogue, was crisp and detailed throughout. The score was brilliant. My wife and I are still talking about this movie. Check it out.

Fascinating story: Jamaica Inn: Viewers complain over 'mumbling actors' Monday's launch episode of new BBC period drama Jamaica Inn sparked more than 100 complaints, after sound issues left viewers struggling to understand what was being said on screen. The BBC later apologised to viewers, claiming the "issues with the sound levels" could not be altered while the drama was on air. "We are adjusting the dialogue levels in episode two and three to address audience concerns so they can enjoy the rest of the drama and would like to apologise to those viewers who were affected," said a statement, ahead of Tuesday's second instalment. "It sounded like listening th…
