As suggested by Jim, here is a single thread suitable for updating information and discussing current issues and activities that affect the radio spectrum we use in our work, particularly for our wireless systems. As Jim suggested I "moderate" this thread, please feel free to post information here, and I'll advise if there are any concerns... OK ??

I am looking for some advice from anyone in the UK or who has relevant travel experience there. I am traveling as part of a 3 person crew with gear for 5 days later this month. Our producer has us flying in and out of London and taking trains to Cambridge and Liverpool and then back to London. This seems crazy to me. In the US one would rent a minivan for this kind of thing. Any thoughts? Also, Liverpool or Everton?

Oh I wish people would use their names, not such a good ring to "Welcome writer1230 as our 9000th new member!" In any case, it is a milestone for our great site, starting out in 2006 with just a handful of people, now in 2014 with 9000 members! Welcome!

It was 17 years ago today, that I lost a friend and Assistant Cameraman, Brent Lon Hershman. "Brent's Rule" was the rallying cry for "12 On, 12 Off". 17 very long years later, we are still waiting. Miss you Brent.

I was doing a job today, a documentary, with a NOMAD 10. I've had it for about 6 months and haven't had an ounce of problems with it, love the thing. Today, after about an hour into an interview, during a 22 minute long take, audio cut out, and the NOMAD just froze like a crappy PC from the 90s or something. Wouldn't respond, wouldn't cut, had to shut it down. On restarting, luckily the file recovery program recovered the file successfully where it had cut out. Thank god for that system btw. Listened to the file and it seemed ok. Rolled again, thinking I was ok, then 30 seconds later, nomad makes high pitched tone and freezes again. Restart again, and again, recov…

Bernie, are you ok? I was watching the Vikings and saw the clip of Linval finding you before he found any quarterbacks. I hope you're alright. At least you got to see a win. It's been a while. Josh

I am making an appeal to all our member to once again consider joining CinemaSound network as an alternative to our Discussion Group here. I know I asked many months ago and a few people did join up (actually, the Aussies started a group which is very well attended) but in no way was CinemaSound going to be able to replace the Discussion Group. It's a new year and I continue to be gratified that this group functions so well and is such a nice place for us all to hang out, but I am still very motivated to move things over to CinemaSound to provide for our members so many more features and ease of use. Even just the simple forum-type features we have here work so much bette…

Hello to all (new to the group), I'm going to be working on a doc in Beirut and America. Usually I capture field recordings of ambient sound. On this doc i'll be recording dialogue and music as well as ambient sound. This is my first time doing this and I was wondering if you could offer tips on capturing three to four people in conversation with regards to off-mic issues. I'll be using Audio Ltd 2040 radios with dpa4060 mics and either a Schoeps or if I can get hold of one DPA4017 shotgun. I have been thinking of an ms setup but unfortunately DPA doesn't have such a set up so it may well be schoeps in the end. Thank you in advance. Moreno

Ever get sick of hearing the DP or Director call out boom in the shot? Especially when getting slates, or amidst the handheld camera framing up to the ceiling as the operator adjusts himself...

"Over the weekend, spectrum sensing prototypes were tested by the FCC at the FedEx field in Maryland prior to Saturday's game between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills. Shure, a microphone manufacturer said in a press release issued Sunday that the spectrum-sensing white-space devices caused "harmful interference to wireless microphones" during the live event." I think I need to do a little more re-thinking regarding this new site. One thing I am going to do is put up a different theme (the look of the site) which will allow me to incorporate some of the features and functions we are not happy with here. The decision may be made to abandon this new site altogether and just go back to using the old site we know and love.

Trew Audio and Georgia's local sound pros have a lot to look forward to this summer as we finally open shop in Atlanta. The issue of sales tax was always the obstacle in the past, but Georgia production is too significant for Trew Audio to not have local presence. So be looking for a fully stocked Trew Audio store with sales, rental, repair, and custom cable shop soon. Staff interviews will start soon, so anyone interested in employment opportunities should send their info to jobs@trewaudio.com (please put "Atlanta" in the subject line). Glen Trew

My dear friend and fellow worker, Don Coufal, passed away this morning. Don was so much a part of my life having spent over half my life with him over the last 40+ years --- we did 67 movies together, countless commercials, co-founded Northstar Media Sound Services. I owe so much of my career to Don's incredible talent, his unwavering commitment to our work together. So often when I was offered a job or someone was recommending me, they would always say "get Jeff-and-Don" like it was one entity, and in so many ways we were --- so different from eachother, our strengths and weaknesses, but so incredibly complimentary as a team, so much more than either of us individua…

If you routinely use mic transmitter power greater than 50 mW (and I know many of you do) then you might want to read then consider filing a comment on Shure's filing here: http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/comment/view?id=60001013997 look on p. 31 Shure proposes applying a 50 mW limit on all Part 74, Subpart H transmitters (that means *your* transmitters) in the VHF and UHF bands. Lectrosonics and Sennheiser argue the opposite, not only that we wish to maintain the current 250 mW limit for UHF transmitters, but also to raise the limit for VHF transmitters to 250 mW as well. The deadline for comment is tomorrow, Feb. 25.

Where in LA? 1 2

Hi LA folks, I just got to LA and I'm absolutely brand new to the area. I have some time and I want to check and see the place as much as I can so my question is; What part of LA might be a good idea to move into "IF" the focus was ONLY being in the most convenient location for most non-union sound mixer/recordist gigs. I'm aware that it will be a relative question in some sense however since I don't know anything about LA I wouldn't want to move somewhere that I might have a hard time reaching production houses, overall gigs, etc... If anyone is around and wants to meet up (even for a short time) I really would love to! thanks Engin
