As reported in the L.A. Times: In a cost-savings move, Walt Disney Studios is shutting down director and producer Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers Digital studio in Marin County, which employs 450 people. Those employees will be phased out over the course of the year until the facility closes by January 2011. Given today's economic realities, we need to find alternative ways to bring creative content to audiences and IMD no longer fits into our business model," Disney Studios President Alan Bergman said in a statement. Ever since ousting Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook and overhauling the movie operation under his successor, Rich Ross, the Burbank studio has …

I just read about this today, and thought some of you might find it interesting: http://vimeo.com/musicstore It's a new service from Vimeo that makes it easier for video makers to find music for their productions. They're offering two kinds of license options: 1) Music from the "Free Music Archive," which has tracks that all have a Creative Commons license. 2) Music from "Audiosocket," which features up-and-coming artists and composers who offer tracks for either $2 each (for personal, non-commercial work), and $98 for commercial stuff. Kind of interesting, eh?

Daily Variety: Budget cuts threaten Italo state film entity By NICK VIVARELLI ROME -- Italian state film entity Cinecitta-Luce has announced it is on the brink of closure due to draconian arts funding cuts, prompting cries of consternation both within the local industry and from the international film community. Cinecitta-Luce, which is located on the historic Cinecitta studios lot, comprises promotional, production and distribution activities, plus the vast Istituto Luce archives, a historical treasure trove, as part of its mission. Happy July 4th to all! I just heard from Scott Wood of Digidesign, in Beijing who tells me: "I've been the principle workflow designer and will be on site testing and training their staff on "camera to digital cinema master" workflow training at the massive new 1.3M square foot China Film Group facility North of Beijing, which opens later this month. Think “digital filmâ€ meets “Chinese manufacturingâ€ meets “massive funding.â€ It is likely now the largest media workflow center in the world, designed to put out 80 feature films and 200 TV movies each year. These guys seriously invested in file based workflow, from acquisition to delivery." Here is what C…

100% Recyclable Plastic is made from Old Tires Used tires, despite being quite notorious as a waste material, are actually not that hard to collect and recycle. You can for example, simply reuse it as raw material for road construction. Other concepts for recycling tires may even be more efficient, such as this old concept that might provide a more “flexible” tire recycling solution.

Daily Variety's Dave McNary writes: Guild, AMPTP remain at loggerheads for now With the town remaining unsettled over a potential strike, the stalemate between SAG and the major studios will stay in place until next week. The two sides met for four hours Wednesday afternoon in a session set up for SAG to ask questions about the congloms' final offer, two days after the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers pulled the plug on further negotiations. "SAG asked for more time to study our final offer and indicated it will contact the producers on Monday." the AMPTP said. "We remain hopeful that SAG will advise that it is accepting our final offer. No fur…

I've decided to make two of my apps: Open Callsheet and Timecard Buddy completely free to use until December. Both of them are meant to cut down on paper use, so maybe they'll play a small part in keeping people safe. opencallsheet.com timecardbuddy.com Video demonstrations: OpenCS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3NosM6ZO3I TCBuddy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxkxMsfPSAU (My apologies for excluding those outside of the US. Regarding the order of posts displayed, I apologize for messing around with this and affecting everyone's settings. To clarify at this point, any member here, once logged in, can set things the way they want it to be by selecting "Profile" and changing some settings. When you have the settings for your Profile displayed, in the sidebar go to "Look and Layout", UN-check "Show most recent posts at top" (if it is checked), click on "Change Profile" button in lower right corner and you should now have posts in proper order. Regards, Jeff Wexler

He has some good and interesting points in this speech however I think it's ultimately self serving and unrealistic to think major movies would premier on netflix under it's current TV licensing model.

A less sanguine look at the Variety story on the possible SAG/AMPTP break through from Jonathan Handel's "Digital Media Law" SAG and the Studios: The Next Roadblocks http://digitalmedialaw.blogspot.com/2009/04/sag-and-studios-next-roadblocks.html RL Note: I had to correct my own words re: "sanguine" from "more sanguine" to "less". Sanguine means "cheerfully optimistic", which Handel's post is not.
