L.A. production takes downturn Off-lot film shooting slows, but TV rises By DAVE MCNARY "Off-lot feature production in Los Angeles posted its weakest quarter ever during the opening three months of this year amid the threat of an actors strike and the ongoing trend of features shooting outside Hollywood. First-quarter stats released Monday by permitting agency FilmL.A. showed 903 days of feature shooting, off 56% from the 2008 first quarter and down 14% from the fourth quarter -- which set the previous record for lowest production level since record keeping began in 1994." http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118002381.html?categoryid=13&cs=1 RL

This really only concerns our members who participate here and on CinemaSound. Ning Network has made their big announcement today, bringing an end to the FREE networks they had been hosting. The pricing plans and feature sets they have announced are actually quite reasonable and competitive (but not free). At this point, I am paying for the new CinemaSound network to be Ad free and have the features we need. I am considering paying Ning on one of the lower cost plans which will keep the original CinemaSound going for awhile. I am not suggesting that we will all move BACK to the Ning network (don't hate me) I just want to keep all our options open. One thing that was an…

Quote from Scott: "Can you put up a web page that the user fills out and then has to enter the coded letter/number message which then sends a email to their address that then have to click on to verify?" No, I am not able to do that routine (which I know is a common technique for avoiding all the nonsense I am going through). The software package that runs this Forum does not provide for that sort of sign up. If I were a little more skilled in html and real web construction, I could put up such a page on my regular website (not this Forum) which could sign people up, authorize and all that stuff. I am not able to do it on my own, sorry. The way it has been working …

Just caught this on the web: http://www.amptp.com/ It's not quite what it seems. The "real" AMPTP is at amptp.org. This is a hilarious parody of the ongoing Writers vs. Studios situation. Granted, with many of us facing no money coming in, it's hard to laugh -- and trust me, we're just as nervous and frightened in post as those of you in production -- but some of the bon mots on this website made me laugh out loud. --Marc W.

If you're available, you don't really have an excuse to not come hang out with your compadres. What: Social event for sound mixers and others interested in sound for television and film …

Hey, everybody. Pardon the shameless plug, but I recently started my own blog about sound for film and TV called sync.sound.cinema. Essentially, I'm trying to create a place where audio newbies and video folks can get a brief tour of the sound-for-picture world, along with tips, techniques, and a little history. I'm always looking for new info, so if you folks out there know of anything that would be of interest, please send it my way. Link: http://syncsoundcinema.blogspot.com/ Thanks, Christian

Coliseum officials made $1 million in cash payments to union Bundles of cash were used to pay wages of IATSE members for concerts and other productions, with no controls on disbursement. The U.S. Labor Department is investigating. By Paul Pringle and Rong-Gong Lin II, Los Angeles Times February 1, 2012 For at least five years, officials with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum passed bundles of cash totaling more than $1 million to a union representative, sometimes in a suitcase packed with $100 bills. The payments, ranging from $1,400 to $187,700 each, were to cover the wages of stagehands on Coliseum events — rave concerts, Cinco de Mayo performa…

I have had to disable any and all EMAIL notification functions for this forum in an effort to solve what we believe is a spam/server problem of some sort. Personal Messages should be unaffected so you can continue to use those. I hope none of our members are inconvenienced by this --- I really don't know how many people have set their profiles up to have email notifications sent out. Once we solve this problem I will reactivate this feature. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Jeff Wexler
